1&1 Internet vs Go Daddy.com - Opinions
« on: October 22, 2011, 07:57:24 PM »
I use Apple's Mobile Me service for my personal WEB & Photo Hosting and unfortunately it will go away in June.  I have all my Domain's registered with Go Daddy; however they don't don't provide Free Domain Registration or IMAP for eMail.  I'm considering moving my personal Domain Name and personal WEB & Photo Hosting to 1&1,  They offer free Domain Name (no annual fee), free Domain Registration, 500 real eMail accounts, unlimited Web space, etc.).  Does anyone has any opinions about 1&1 Internet, Inc?

Thanks in advance for your opinions.

When you see this ( unlimited Web space ), RUN.  There is no such thing.

I prefer to use smaller companies that don't rely on hype and exaggerated claims.

I've been using 1and1 since 2008 and have been pleased with the service.  Yes, I've had a few problems (a couple caused by me, and a couple caused by bad coding of a server-mate site).  I have the Business Linux-dual-webhead service and run 4 websites on it.  I like the access to shell via SSH and direct crontab configuration (I've got a fair number of cron jobs running).

They do have a strict level-1/level-2 separation for tech support, and the folks in level-1 (the ones you actually get to talk to) are pretty-much operating off of a scripted-reply, and any real issues that are outside the script have to be escalated to the server admins (who work on their own timescale and with little feedback to level-1).  So solving a simple problem such as 'the cron task has stopped' can take from 1 to 24 hours to get fixed.

But... it does normally run quite reliably :)

I disagree with WeatherHost somewhat given several folks experience with having a small webhost company suddenly close their doors (leaving former sites stranded).  It happened with the predecessor of this very forum (dear weatherforum.net) that the DNS and the hoster expired concurrently.  I sleep better at night knowing that the hoster(s) I have are experiencing positive cash-flow so are less likely to expire suddenly.

Best regards,
Ken

I concur with Ken, 1&1 has been very successful for me. I have had a couple outages but nothing major or continuing of long periods of time. I have 13 websites/domains registered with them and have excellent service. Have never had to go to Level-2 support. I've used their services for the past few years.

Are they the cheapest? No, but then pricing isn't everything.

1&1 Business package satisfaction here as well. A few very minor squirts here & there in the beginning. Never any real problems.

I did have one major & site crippling glitch that I finally tracked down as being a "runaway" Cron job that I screwed the pooch with using some bad coding. Level 1 was of no help at all when I had no idea what it was. Ken was much more helpful with a simple suggestion in utilizing Putty for diagnostics (thanks again!). Level 1 tech only offered the basic flowchart checks.

Other than that - no problem with 1&1 and I'm very satisfied. I ended up with them after deciding to put all my eggs in one basket and reading favorable reviews in the forum.
