Devastating tornado In Joplin MO
« on: May 22, 2011, 07:43:55 PM »
There has been a devastating tornado in Joplin, Mo, and it is still on the ground.  A hospital took a significant hit and much of it's upper floor seemed to be gone. TWC' Great Tornado Hunt is on scene live and they have seen numerous dead and injured.  There doesn't seem to be much left.
Is this going to end?  My prayers are with them and those in Minneapolis and other areas.

ADDED: YOu can go to TWC and go to Great Tornado Hunt to view a live stream of video.

Turned it on.  Amazing.  What a crazy year.

Homes damaged in Minneapolis.  Some will be totaled. That is an area with a lot of empty houses for many reasons.
As of an hour ago, one fatality reported.

I posted links on the weather photog thread.

It is reported by officials now that an explosion may be imminent at the hospital. With all the oxygen and anesthetic gasses that are flammable it is extrememly dangerous.

According to The Weather Channel, the death toll in Joplin, is now at 24 confirmed dead. Sadly, this toll is expected to climb much higher. From what I have seen on TV, the town is completely devastated!

Step grandmother lives in Thayer, some 100+ miles to the SE near the AR/MO border. Called her an hour ago to let her know of the situation. So far, the squall is only severe, not tornadic. Praying here.  [-o<

I am returning from the Dayton Hamvention in Ohio driving to Southern California. Got stuck in Lebanon, MO. It was heading for us but skirted around us. My wx alert in my radio has been going nuts but at least it works.

Currently from TWC the confirmed death toll is 89 and it will rise more.  It is hard to believe.  As IMADreamer said it is another sad, sad day!
Mike Bettes was following this storm, for the Great Tornado Hunt research project, and was just a few minutes behind the tornado but did not know it because it was rain wrapped.  He said they stopped for a couple minutes to watch a wall cloud and hail.  They are fairly certain if they had not stopped they would have been right in the tornado and likely killed.  Even with all the tech storm chasing can be very very dangerous and I am suprised some aren't killed every year.

My wife told me she saw on the news where they found an x-ray from the hospital 70 miles away.

A single x-ray image could have come from some place a lot closer to where it was found like patient's home, doctor's office or some other place and still have the hospital's identifier.

I beleive it would be possible for that x-ray to travel that far.  Dr Forbes was analyzing the tornado from the radar dat this morning.  He showed the debris ball and did a verticle slice throught it.  The debris was be thrown up to 18,000 feet high and something like and x-ray could float for a long time at that altitude.  It could also have come from a place closer but with the hospital taking a hit it is very possible it came from there.  they have shown the analysis of this tornado by Dr. Forbes several times and probably will again.

Death toll is now at 116 people dead in Joplin. This is the first single tornado since 1953 that has taken over 100 lives. I thought this would be a day I would never see in my lifetime, and that with modern technology would never happen again.

Yours truly,

Ron

SPC says it was a high EF4 but only 2mph below an EF5.  They now list it as the 9th deadliest tornado in American history and toll still rising.

Why they don't just call it an EF5 is beyond me!

Tornado's "die down" and then intensify throughout their life. Looking at the damage, it is clearly an EF5, many homes were wiped clean off their foundations. I don't get the people who rate these things. It's like the purposely want to downplay the thing.

I doubt they are purposely downgrading.  There are forensic clues that separate an EF4 from an EF5 and only saying it's 2mph takes away from the science of it all.  Meteorology is a science, and the future studies of this event will rely on accurate scientific data collecting during the post event surveys.

If they say it's an EF4 I trust them.

BTW homes can be wiped off their foundations in EF2s or even less depending on how the home was constructed.

I believe there is bias and political catering when classifying some tornado. There were times where an F4 "magically" became an F5 just prior to or shortly after a presidential visit.

Doswell, Meta, Marshall, and many other big names had serious arguments at a Severe WX conference here several years ago that the enhanced F-Scale would prevent "Fujita Creep" due to political entanglements.

I remember reading an article that talked about this issue. The scientist was stating that winds of over 300MPH are not possible and that Mr. Fujita was wrong in his calculations. Then in May 1999, a DOW recorded wind speeds of 301MPH from the OK tornado.

Science is not infallible and they are always changing and modifying their positions. Sadly, there is bias among scientists.

Oh I forgot everything in America now is left or right and has some political agenda.

The bottom line still stands that unless you are on the ground in Joplin you can not determine the EF rating because the difference between an EF4 and an EF5 are in the small details largely which you can't see on internet pictures.

What I think is devastating is that the number of people rescued is only 17.... You would think with all of the rubble that this number would have been higher....

Is there anyway that we can get a look of the storm on radar now?

You can got back and get the level two data from NOAA on the web.  Maybe someone can post the link, I'm at work right now so I don't have it on this computer.  I could post it late tonight though.

Sadly, yes, even certain issues with weather science can be political.

I just watched a report on the Joplin tornado and the meteorologist stated that it definitely was an EF5.

Here is a link from FEMA on how to build a tornado proof room:

Yes, the SPC has officially labeled the Joplin tornado as an EF5.  I am afraid it is going to have company after today with the strong tornadoes going on in Oklahoma at the moment.  Already fatalities reported.

Although an unfair approach, the damage from the storm should have made that determination easy

I'm a bit confused are you gloating like a child over the death over more then 110 people because it was upgraded and you thought it would be because you possess some magical ability to rate storm damage over the internet or because you believe it was upgraded because the president coming on Sunday?

If the spc says its an ef5 then I believe it to be but not because of any reason you think it is.  Again you can't tell from pictures there is much.more to the ratings then that.
