Piwik Open Source Site Analytics
« on: January 31, 2011, 01:59:18 PM »
Got PHP? Got MySQL? Then read on...

I've been looking for an open-source PHP/MySQL site analytics program and stumbled upon www.piwik.org.

I know, I could run Google Analytics, but any time I add an external site to mine, their load speed can affect how fast my pages load.

Anyway, Piwik is very easy to set up, and I had it running on 2 sites in less that a half hour. So far, I'm pretty happy with it, and I've learned some things, especially what some search terms wind up leading to SLOweather.com. For instance, it confirmed my suspicion that some people search for san louis obispo, rather than luis, and some even search for st. louis obispo.

Also, I had 2 links from Wikipedia, where SLOweather is mentioned in the entries for San Luis Obispo city, and county.

There are also additional plug-ins for Piwik, as well as apps to view your Piwik data on smart phones like my Droid 2.

It's been over a month.  Have you ingested enough data to give an update?  I recently got started with Google Analytics but share your same reservations, in addition to not liking to send info to Big-Google from my non-crawled pages.

Have a look at it...

I just figured out how to allow a view-only user to look at the piwik pages.

Go to http://wx.sloweather.com/piwik/

User and password both wxforum.

Let me know what you think...

Checked it out.  Don't think it is going to work for me, so thanks for the preview opportunity.

IE8 choked on it and had to be closed from the TM.  Rebooted, tried again, same result, except this time (before login) got message "Error: You can't access this resource as it requires an 'view' access for the website id = 1."  Still choked on loading widgets.

FF3.6 loaded, but it spent a lot of time loading widgets before it displayed content (I could still scroll, unlike IE8).  Some contained typical analytic links, but others just showed pretty folders (see attachment), all of which linked to wx.sloweather.com and the number of folders in the different widgets would change every few seconds from 10's to 100's to 10's.

I have a variable-speed fan in my box (dual 3GHz Xeons with 4GB ram) and it was going crazy.  TM shows FF using 50-99% of ticks, and over 200MB.

Been using it for over a year, it is quite good, so long as you are using it local, there is a desktop (flash) app that works with it well also.
