Title: GoldStar Station
Post by: arrowspace90 on January 17, 2019, 10:33:45 AM
If WU "likes" your station data for 5 consecutive days, you get the little gold medal next to your station ID.

Well, mine disappeared when I had the station down for maintenance.  No surprise.  But a couple of other times, it has vanished when I thought all was well.  I look at CWOP to see my station analysis but that has no impact on WU.

How does WU analyze my data?  I don't have to get a medal, but if something is wrong, I would like to know what, so I can decide if it's something I need to fix.

Unfortunately WU is back to having issues. There is no merit to how Gold Stars are awarded. They claim 5 days of consistently good reporting but this has been proven to not be true. Basically WU has this Gold Star feature and it has never worked.

Lately WU is like a run away train down a mountain and the train conductor and engineers are not at the helm.

2018 began with the worst WU has ever been. Down servers, inability to properly report and retrieve data. Then things started to get better around Spring 2018. They made a lot of promises and opened lines of communication with the community. They made reliability improvements and took away features that didn't work and caused overhead (ability to edit data, set status message, MADIS reporting turned off... etc). They continued to also sqwash bugs. By late Summer and Fall the improvements were great and noticeable. But there were still minor bugs. A new future interface was revealed to some and a feedback beta testing initiative occurred with some weather enthusiasts (I was one of them). But no date was set nor promised for the new interface. Then in late 2018 we all noticed things to go quiet from WU. They stopped communication with the community. So they are MIA. We don't know what IBM is planning now nor thinking. That is why I call it a run away train with nobody seemingly in control.

I have seen the star come and go as quick as 3 day cycles, it really means nothing. Last year it was gone for months and months and I changed nothing and then bam it was back solid for months. It would be nice if there was a way to login and see why it's gone, I do know flaky internet will cause it to go and if something hangs and you send the same repeat data for like an hour it will be gone, bad data like temp too high/low or barometer 2" off does not effect it as there are a couple broken stations in my area and they proudly display their gold star. lol

I don't recall ever seeing a gold star.  But WU has not been reliable for several years.

I think the main reason it was bought was so they could legally use the name on the Weather Channel.  The Weather Underground program is on every night with Mike Bettis and Alex Wilson, IIRC.

I'm see I'm now a goldstar.
Don't know why.
I upload 2x a day - at 1158 and 2358.

Just to keep my account active...

My station updates every 30 seconds for weeks without interruption and I've only seen the gold star when I first created the station.  That star went away within a day or two, never to return,

I had a gold star for like two days back in December, and my station’s been up and running since last March.

Since I have dumped my website, I had a referral to WU.  I have the gold star as well.    I don''t mind sharing my data.   I wonder if they would take all the cold air and snow too?

The only time i lose my star is when my data fails to upload for what ever reason, normally wifi off or leccy of for maintenance etc, if ya desperate for one, take one from my signature ;)

My star came back for one day and has not reappeared since.

From everything people are saying, I will stop thinking about it.  I look at my CWOP analysis and the Mesonet site to evaluate my data.
