WS68 vs WS85
« on: June 01, 2025, 12:29:59 PM »
Hello to the community again. I am in the process of buying a GW3000, WN32 and one of the 2 anemometers. Which of the 2 is better, regardless of price? The WS85 updates every 8.5 seconds, which is half the time of WS68. It also has no moving parts, so maybe it is more durable.

the WS85 (and the WS90) is more difficult to "calibrate" for rain due to the different way of measuring rain.
Regarding wind, there are also different technologies involved - the WS68 with classic wind readings (wind cups), the WS85/WS90 with ultrasonic measurements which also work well at low wind speeds,
Instead of the WS85 I would go for a WS90 for several reasons:
- solar readings available (WS85 no)
- can be heated in winter and completely run on an external power supply (accessory).
You can also run a WS85 with a WS68 for solar readings - in this combination the wind readings of the WS68 will be discarded by the console (--> WiKi: sensor hierarchy, see signature)

In general, my outdoor sensor (array) recommendation is a WS80 + WH40H + WN32(-EP) - the most solid combination in my experience and you can place the sensors independent from each other - and you have an array reporting time of 4.75 seconds.
In can also be run on an external power supply - with an inbuilt heater.

Thank you very much for the answer. At this moment I do not need the rainfall measurements, I am interested in the wind measurements. The WS80 seems to be the best choice, 4.75 seconds is a very good time. Regrettably, I placed my order for the WS68 anemometer on the ECOWITT website a few hours ago, I will try to cancel it.

I have a WS68, and I am very pleased with it for wind speed/direction. The solar and UV readings need careful "calibration".

You are unlikely to need a heater in Greece and, with the solar panel, the single battery in the WS68 will last a long time.

that definitely depends on where @crt lives resp. has his weather station in Greece. Near the beaches rather not, in the North they had snowfall around Easter.

You are both right, it depends on the location, if the location is at altitude and far from the sea, it can snow for many days, in the other areas the snowfall is minimal. In Athens where I live it is 5-10 days a year. On the contrary, it is important to have a very good radiation shield for the thermometer. I have designed and will build one with commercial materials at low cost. If I find in practice that it works, I will make an analytical post here as well.
