Weathercat moved to a new Mac--Problems
« on: April 28, 2025, 08:04:16 PM »
Hi All:

Just moved from an Intel Mac to a silicon Mac.
Used Migration assistant, but all WC flies seem to be in the right place?
Reloaded the Silicon labs driver, but the installer doesn't finish?
Did force quit, but the driver does show in extensions.
 See attached file.

The log does show WC is not communicating, and there is no history? But all the files are there?

Can anyone suggest a path to fix this?

Thank you

Rich

Hi WeatherguyNH,

Not sure how helpful this will be, but here goes…

I’m not sure what equipment and software you use, but I’m running WeatherCat 3.3.1 on a MacStudio with M2Max running MacOS 15.4.1.  The Vantage Pro 2 Console is connected to the Mac via a USB/Serial Data logger with a SiLabs driver version 6.0.2 running on the Mac.

This configuration is very stable and runs for months on end without attention.

To me, your problem looks like it’s related to the SiLabs driver not functioning.

If you moved over from an Intel Mac, Migration Assistant would  have transferred the intel version of the driver over to your new Mac and that version does not work on an Apple Silicon machine.

I would start by removing all traces on the current Silabs driver from your new Mac.  Then do Restart and try installing the Silabs driver (6.0.2) afresh.  The installation process must complete properly otherwise you can’t be sure that the process is successful.  After the installation is complete you must do a restart because drivers load at start up.

After that you can check that the driver is running by launching Activity Monitor and looking for a process called com.silabs.cp210x (that’s what I see anyway!).

Then launch WeatherCat and see what happens.

Worst case you will have to reinstall WeatherCat.  If you have to go that far, I would do a complete backup of all your WeatherCat data using its backup facility, then do a Restore after installing a fresh copy of WeatherCat.

Migration Assistant is very good but not always perfect!

Good luck and let us know how it goes.

Thanks for the reply!
Background: I am moving from an Intel iMac to a Mac Mini M4.
Running the latest Weathercat software, which I have been running for more than 10 years I think?
Latest Mac OS with this new mini.
After thinking about this all night, I went about trying to reload the SL kernel, but each time, the installation app fails to complete.
This morning I started up the mini with extensions off and disconnected all weather feeds into the Mac.
I tried once again to load the Slabs driver, and again, the process "did not seem" to complete.
Restart the Mac, the driver did show in the extensions in settings.
So...thinking about this for a bit, I went back to weathercat settings and clicked on "COMMS" to reset.
Well, the COMMS were NOT set on the SL drivers, so I put that right, and all of my past data came back and all seems to be working fine, including uploads to my website.

Posting this solution here in case anyone else runs into this...

Thanks again for the reply and help....

Great news!  Glad it's all working for you now.

A bit weird about the Silabs installation process though!

I agree?
Not sure why this installer fails to complete?
But, no one to contact, no one to ask.

I was starting to think I'd better move on from Weather Cat....

Thanks again..

I love it when a WeatherCatter sorts out a solution. Well done, and thanks for posting how you did it.
