Munged rich text formatting
« on: August 06, 2024, 11:13:15 AM »
I'm getting instances of incorrect HTML tags being randomly inserted into my posts.

It appears that the QUOTE tag gets ignored and the font size is set to something incredibly tiny instead. The QUOTE tag also appears at the end of text that isn't a quote. Looks like a case of faulty attempts to pair tags.

Modifying my post afterwards doesn't change the behavior.

I think it's browser dependent and may be caused by an extension in your browser.  Which browser are you using?

I did a small set of markup corrections on your post in another thread.
The issue was having [QUOTE] instead of [quote] and some extra [font]...[/font] entries.. I removed them and fixed the [QUOTE] markup.

. . . the font size is set to something incredibly tiny. . .

Modifying my post afterwards doesn't change the behavior.

It's been driving me mad for months. . . copying anything to a post in the forum becomes so tiny it's invisible.

Mainly using Edge. I don't think I've posted about it, but I have had correspondence with Ken by PM. . . he thinks it's an extension in Edge, but his final comment was
Quote
Funny.. your quote got [size=2px.../size] tags inserted in it.
[/size]
[size=2px.../size]
Forum won't let me post the actual tags, and I didn't add the [/size] to the quote, or the extra [size=2px.../size], either.
[/size]

Thanks - I'll make sure to use quote instead of QUOTE. The font tags were inserted - I didn't put them in.

Exactly the kind of behavior I've seen. saratogaWX offered some tips.

I've always used lowercase quote, and AFAIK I've never used font - but if I copy anything from anywhere into a forum post it's almost invisible  :?

I must admit that I can't remember if I've ever tried Chrome or Firefox, but it is interesting (suspicious?) that I use Edge and you use Safari. . .

EDIT: and I'm fed up with the Forum adding extra line spaces between paragraphs, too

It may be that the Safari and Edge browsers try to copy and paste 'rich text' HTML format while Chrome and Firefox try to copy just 'plain text'.

Are you using the Reply button or the Quote button or the Quick Reply area on the page?

Hmm... they all look normal with no extra stuff.  Here's a copy/paste of a prior post with a quote.

Ok.. that is weird, Here's the code of your tiny line:
Code: [Select]

[font=verdana][size=1px]Quote from: saratogaWX on Today at 14:14:22[/size][/font][font=verdana][size=1px]Are you using the Reply button or the Quote button or the Quick Reply area on the page?Reply or Quote, never Quick Reply - but it happens with new posts, too. This is a Safari reply with copy/paste text

[/size][/font]

Your browser must be cursed somehow with the extra [font] and [size] markups inserted.

In your profile, look and layout, try unticking the "Show WYSIWYG editor on post page by default." and try the copy/paste again.

(mine is unticked for all those tests).

So that seems to work!

Getting late now, I'll maybe try some other options tomorrow. . .  :-)

AhHa.. it seems to be the WYSIWYG editor in the forum that is misbehaving.. I'll look into that!

Glad we have the problem area isolated.

Glad we finally found the culprit.  I'll have to dig into the editor code to see what I can find.  Even though our 2.0.19 version is 'off support', there may exist a remedy to the issue.. meanwhile, continue to with the un-tick of the WYSIWYG editor in your profile (BTW, the forum default is and has been to NOT use the WYSIWYG editor for new registrations).

It's been driving me mad for months. . . copying anything to a post in the forum becomes so tiny it's invisible.

One thing that likely will solve that problem is to copy the 'copied' text to an "intermediate" text editor that either won't accept the embedded font codes, or will show the font codes so you can remove them.

For instance, I always have Geany open anyway, (I use it as a text editor) and it ignores those annoying markup  codes. So I paste the text into Geany, then "copy" from Geany back into the paste buffer.  Then when you post to WXForum it should be 'clean' text.

If you want to use other editors, I'd look for one that is NOT a "rich text" editor. I avoid Microsoft products but I think that Notepad should work.
