Anole's Weather Graphic - Transparency
« on: January 12, 2009, 10:21:38 AM »
I'm probably overlooking the obvious, but I'm unable to get Anole's Weather Graphic to produce a transparent GIF for me. I think I've followed all the instructions, but I'm not seeing the expected results.
1) I've created a non-transparent GIF in GIMP with a color of RGB(250,250,250).
2) I've verified this matches the setting for the $trans_color variable in the config.txt file.

Unfortunately, when I display my weather graphic against a blue background, I still see a white background within the graphic itself.

Any suggestions about what I'm missing?

Thanks,

Steve

Since I haven't had any takers to my question, let me try a different route.

Is anyone actually using a transparent weather graphic? All that I've ever seen are solid colors or images. If you have a transparent weather graphic, what did you do to get it to work?

Thanks,

Steve

Hi, Steve -

I tried the transparent thing when I was making my little custom conditions icons. Like you, I was unable to get it to work correctly, so I fudged a little and, using Corel Photopaint, (you could use PhotoShop as well), I imported each icon into the backgrond image, then cropped around it so that what was left was the cloud with the portion of the backgorund over which the script would place it. This gives it the illusion of a transparent background surrounding the icon as it "floats" over the real background of the city.

Of course, ths trick won't work if what you need is true transparency of the graphic itself.

Also - I am still running a very old version of thewxgraphic script - since WeatherBecon and I got into "sticker wars" last year - trying to outgun each other with "customizations" to Anole's original fine work.

Now that I have chimed in, maybe smeone who really knows what they're doing will and you'll get the answer you need  :?

Hey Steve,

I appreciate your response. It's nice to know I'm not alone having a problem.

For the time being, I've taken the same approach you did and "cheated" with Photoshop. The result is probably fine for most visitors to my website, but I would really like a true transparent sticker if it is possible.

I tried this with the latest version of the Weather Graphic program and had the problem as well.

I submitted a note on Larry's (Anole) website, but haven't gotten a response yet.

Thanks again for sharing your experience.

I thought I'd "re-open" this thread since I've not yet been able to resolve my problem.

Is anyone successfully creating a transparent GIF using Anole's Weather Graphic's script? If so, would you mind sharing what you did?

Thanks,

Steve
