Any suggestions for a wireless weather cam?
« on: November 21, 2013, 06:12:24 PM »
I would like to buy a wireless weather cam to go along with my PWS and I could really use some suggestions. I have a Davis Vantage Vue station. I live in south Texas so snow and ice are really not a concern the heat is the main problem. Also, I would like the best bang for the buck. I don't have a whole lot to spend on it.

Thanks.

Foscam (not the Chinese knock-offs).  Lots of BF sales coming up.

I'm looking for a replacement for my foscam FI8905W.  I've not been very happy with it and it isn't working at the moment.  I would spend up to around $250.  Ideas?

What do you not like about the 8905?  I have a  couple 8910s and they are just fine. For the $250 range try Panasonic or Sharx.  Or save a few more dimes and get a Stardot at the Black Friday sale.  About $500 for the Netcam SC.  Like 1/2 price!

What does your budget look like?   Do you want to stream video or just upload still images?  Were you thinking IP based or USB?  Indoor or weatherproof?  Do you really need wireless?  You still have to power the thing with wires.   Give us a little more info and we can do a better job at helping you.

I have two Logitech 9000 USB webcams that capture a fairly decent image and I bought them for about $30 each on ebay (actually one is down for maintenance right now).  Then I gutted a couple of cheap outdoor halogen lights from Home Depot to use for the waterproof housing and they cost me about $13 each.  So for less than $50 per camera I've got a workable solution.  But it isn't wireless.

Hi there.
I purchased a Foscam FI8905E a few weeks back, and I had no end of problems with it. I sent to back under warranty a few days later and they refunded the cash in full. I've gone with the Foscam FI9805W, and it's performing perfectly.
Good luck!  :-P

My budget is about $150.00, I would like to stream video, I would like it to be USB and weatherproof. I really want it to be wireless as much as possible.

Thanks for your help.

There are scads of ways to get a usb cable out of a home with little or no effect on the structure. I stream 4 Logitech c920s, and except for the 'snowcam', which moves around seasonally, the cables are practically invisible from the exterior, etc. Cost for a c920, extension cables, real housing,  maybe $130 Add a -2 diopter and you're still under 150, depending on what active extensions you need.
You'll still have to get a power cord to a wireless cam in all likelihood also. You'll have the addition of the receiver to your shelf, and it's wall wart to your power box. And you'll probably still connect the receiver with USB or at least a video cable. Your overall image quality on a lower priced wireless will probably be degraded compared to the little Logitechs from what I've seen...
I tried a couple of lower priced wireless cams prior to settling with the wired Loggies...  :-|
