i've 2 ws90, tried everything. That rain gauge is simply unstable, with every rain event react in different way.
For now the best standard kit is gw1100+wh40+ws80
the other problems is that the quality of plastic is incredible cheap. The lowest quality possible.

i forgot one thing, it seems ecowitt is planning to change from ABS to ASA plastic, which is more weather resistant.
One of my WS90 (made in ASA) it is on a seaside resort, so we will see its conditions in the future

Update:

After contacting Ecowitt support and assessing the issues, they suggested sending me the replacement top part (the one where the haptic sensor is) which should replace easily.

I think it is a problem of the new firmware 1.2.3, as they have increased the sensitivity to light rains and for this reason it continues to register rain even if the sensor is only wet. For now i work only with 1.1.9fw.

Having done it for a different failures, be careful when removing the top.  Also, the ribbon cable you will have to unlatch is bit of fun, the latch itself is glued shut, but can be opened. Placing the ribbon cable back into the latch requires good eyes and feel for proper insertion.

However, I think this is another problem. I had nonexistent rain accumulations when I was at version 119 but not with the new 123. The problem with version 123 is that when it starts raining then the sensor does not stop counting for several hours even more than 12 after the rain has stopped falling. I think the upper part has some construction defect that makes the water pass through the part that should be waterproof.

Thank you very much for the tip, I will keep it in mind well. I'm a computer scientist and I'm used to working between flats and delicate parts but having never had my hands in this kind of thing a little fear is there.  [tup]

My observation is with 1.2.3 that the sensor has become more sensitive which translates at gain 1.0 in higher counts. "Shadow counts" I haven't observed (yet ?).
This means that for FW 1.2.3 a different/bigger gain factor will need to be used than with 1.1.9 (probably per tier).

What exactly this factor is at the different calibration tiers you will have to figure out by comparative mesurements - or wait until someone has done this job for you and provides gain factors, which not only work for them but in general (for a dedicated firmware version).

I'm running two WS90, one at 1.1.9 and one on 1.2.3 - and each one will need to get its own calibration set of gain factors.
Unfortunately it's almost not raining in the past two months in my area - so I will have to wait until I have collected enough data.

I think it's not a firmware problem in this case, once it rains it never stops counting between 0.6mm/h and 1.2 and that's regardless of the rain gain (also tried 0.3). It only stops when the sun comes up, which suggests some problem with the haptic sensor.

That has not been my experience at all. When the rain stops, the rain rate also stops. Most of of our rain lately has been at night, so the sun has nothing to do with the rain rate stopping. Our humidity right now is 65% and it's reporting zero rain rate, so I don't think it's caused by humidity either. My gain is still set at 1 as I've been getting satisfactory results with that.

One thing I've learned trying to get the rain calibrations correct is that it still not linear across the various rate rate settings. This is something that Ecowitt said they addressed in 1.23.

In my opinion, the WS90 is over engineered...it has 5 rain gain parameters! so, this makes it very hard to get it just right.

I have a solution that I'm working on. Recently, I've been working with @GuisCB trying to get the rain calibration just right. Using this accurate scale (up to 3 decimals places) unfortunately, is not enough

[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

However, the nice things about this scale, is that it has an RS232 port:

[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

You might be asking, why is this important? Well, the scale can output time and mass, and with this information, I can calibrate any rate of rain with the WS90.

At the moment, im trying to figure out how to water proof this scale so that I can field test it in the rain

keep you posted!

You are more patient than I. Especially with the risk of a new firmware wrecking your current calibrations.
As a fun thing to do, sure, fine. But as a tool, and lets face it, most buy a station as a tool, it is a bunch of work for the average person.

You should also consider to 'wind proof' the scale, as wind could make readings fluctuate ( an oversampling with a numeric filtering could do )

This is a very good point the scale like this if you breath on it the numbers will fluctuate wildly.

I was thinking of putting it in a box with a single hole in it that has a funnel that feeds into the beaker inside the box, which house is both the scale and the container collecting water so that way everything is inside the Box except for the funnel

EDIT Something like this

there was a significant decrease in a performance of the temperature correction system with the latest firmware update. With the oldest version (before the 1.1.9 update on sensor) i remeber batter performace, some people made test in wrong way so i think ecowitt had manage wrong datas

first observations indicate that the factor should rather be 0.7 than 0.75 - and for tier 1 and 2, not only for 1
needs of course a couple of more rain events to verify ...

For me, at times WS90 wittboy began to lose contact with the gate GW1100. The incoming signal dropouts can be several minutes. A few days ago soft 2.1.8 was uploaded, ws90 wittboy is on 2.1.3

I wonder what the reason is, because it wasn't there before. Any idea?

from this observation alone you cannot tell if the cause is with the WS90 or the GW1100.
You would need to connect the WS90 at the same time to different consoles (GW1000, GW1100, GW2000, HP2551 ...) and see if all of them show the same behaviour at the same time.
If so, the cause is likely to be with the sensor array (WS90); if not, it's likely to be a console/gateway issue.

Sorry, but this statement is inconsistent - the GW1100 and/or GW2000 can be on firmware 2.1.8
The WS90 not. It's latest firmware is 1.2.5.
Or did you mean to say that the GW2000 of the GW2001 station (Wittboy = GW2000 + WS90) is still on 2.1.3 ?

Maybe we should have a clear wording here to make sure what exactly we are talking about - and be careful with fast culprit identifications as long as the logic is not forcing but leaves other factors open ....

The WS90 is a transmitter - it doesn't contact anyone or anything - it's just transmitting data (or not if it is faulty).
The console receives the transmissions - so it's the console which can lose contact - due to it itself not functioning properly, due to the sensor (array) not functioning properly, due to electromagnetic interference (EMI), due to power supply issues .... many possible reasons

The WS90 not. It's latest firmware is 1.2.5.
Or did you mean to say that the GW2000 of the GW2001 station (Wittboy = GW2000 + WS90) is still on 2.1.3 ?

Yes I noticed that too with the firmware versions mentioned.
I think he meant to say the ws90 is on version 1.2.3.
I had a chuckle as it would be something I would do.

With the reception difficulties I wonder if it depends on what frequency version that is in use 433, 868, or 915MHz.

Being where I am, I have all my devices on 433MHz and have no issues.

Who has the courage to try?

I do, but with dfu-util.
I opened a new thread for this. It's not going very well. ;)

installed the new WS90 firmware 1.2.5 on one of my WS90 - will see what it gives next time it rains with the recommended gain of 0.75 for the first calibration tier.
[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
first observations indicate that the factor should rather be 0.7 than 0.75 - and for tier 1 and 2, not only for 1
needs of course a couple of more rain events to verify ...

we had now a small rainshower here with little wind and with 0.7  on tier 1 and 1.0 on tier 2 it shows 6mm... which is way too much for my opinion (not proofed).
I will try 0.7 for tier 1 & 2 now.

Are there any new conclusions about the rain gains on WS90 firmware 1.2.5?

Thanks

greetings rage

WS90 firmware 1.2.5 is a joke. Do not update. I get rain in early mornings while the sky is clear.
I think it's water form melting frost.
