WS830 no more temp and solar info
« on: March 23, 2024, 11:27:44 AM »
Hi all,

I'm afraid my trusty WS830 has has released the magic smoke.
A few weeks ago i noticed the windspeed sensot making some noise. I removed the outdoor unit from the roof and put it in the garden, changed out the batteries as well as they where giving alarms that they're low.
When I restarted the unit wind and rain work but the temp, humidity and solar index don't.  Have reset the unit but that didn't work.
I've opened it up but can't see anything wrong with it, I'm afraid I'll have to replace it.

Do you guys know what could be the problem?

1. the sensor connection could be loose (through wind caused vibrations over time)
2. as temp/hum and solar are inside the array connected, the solar values often don't come if the T/RH sensor is defective
3. you may not have to replace the whole sensor array -
there is a sensor replacement or a whole T/RH+rain portion replacement available at shop.ecowitt.net --> accessories for WS69, I-shape, even though you may have a WH65 - Y-shape. For the rain/temp/hum section this doesn't matter - it's the same.

The fixed plate sensor used to be available at https://www.weerstationkopen.nl/ for the Y shaped sensor in The Netherlands, we also have these at Weather Spares in the UK, however, international shipping will be a little more than purchasing locally. https://weatherspares.co.uk/collections/ecowitt-spare-parts/products/ecowitt-temperature-humidity-sensor-for-wh65-ws69

You can also use the 868MHz WS69 array from Ecowitt with the Ventus W830 of the same frequency.
Weather Spares - your one stop shop for complete stations, accessories and spare parts for Davis Instruments, Ecowitt, Oregon Scientific, TFA, Ventus, GARNI and many more - https://www.weatherspares.co.uk/ offering global shipping of products.

Davis Vantage Pro 2 plus 24 hour FARS, Meteobridge NANO SD data logger, Davis AirLink, remote Davis anemometer rooftop mounted.

Thanks for the info guys, will have a look. I'll be needing a new wind speed sensor as well.

Will keep you updated

I would suggest doing this final testing: take out the batteries, and put the array inside a shaded area for 24 hours minimum to completely discharge the solar charges stored. Then power up your console again. The solar and temp sensors might be in an unknown reset state. This is the final way to tell if this can be the case or not. The earlier hardware version on the array can't reset this when they are in an unknown reset state.

"Then power up your console again."  :?: - I guess you meant to say: power up the array again  8-) (by re-inserting the earlier taken-off batteries).

The console remains untouched - and with the black tape approach (see below) the console keeps on receiving and posting the data of the remaining working sensors until the array power expires.

We usually call this a "cold reset" - like in a computer - cold start: shutdown. Power off. Start up again, as opposed to a mere restart (=reset, "warm reset") when the hardware remains powered.

And the way to be sure is to cover the solar panel tightly with black tape (a dark room is also a possibility) and wait until the LED stops blinking or is no longer lit (of course, after having taken out the batteries beforehand).
24 h is an optimistic time guess - I have seen arrays taking up to 72 h

for the procedure see also our wiki:  ;)
http://meshka.eu/Ecowitt/dokuwiki/doku.php?id=start#how_to_reset_an_outdoor_sensor_array

just as a side remark - or shared experience - my WS69 (those days still called WH65 I-shape) is in operation for 5+ years now and needed 2-3 times a warm reset over time when the console started showing dashes "--.--" in some or all display fields except indoor readings (on a WS2320 console that is).

Well,

THAT WORKED!!! Took the batteries out the array and put it in an old cupboard for 3 days. New batteries inserted and all data shows up on the console.

Thanks all for you help. Now to replace the bearing or complete windspeed sensor  as the windspeed sensor runs rough. WS40 helps it for a few weeks but that's not a permanent solution.
