VP2 Console Firmware 3.83
« on: May 17, 2019, 07:23:57 PM »
Anybody aware of FW 3.83? Have only ever seen up to 3.80. What are the changes? Is there a download link?

Given the lack of any response I would take it as a No, nobody is aware? FW 4.33 is also missing in action for the Vue. May be way too many people concentrating on this WLL thing but as FW 3.83 & 4.33 have been active for some time it begs the question of what Davis is doing in regard the support page and updates which has taken a dive of late.

I checked Davis' web site and unsurprisingly it wasn't there. I even changed the URL to reflect the 3.83 and nothing...

Where did you hear about it? Is is shipping in new consoles or something?

It has been shipping in new consoles for a while meaning it would have a release date of maybe late last year?

The Vue console I just got with 4.33 installed was built 1/21/19.

Yes that's what I would expect based on FW releases over the years. What is not normal is there has been no inclusion of this release in the now fragmented support pages which is probably related to WL.com and WLL activity?

Yes, it now seems common place to see updates being shipped on hardware that's not included on the update site.  :???:

It's also beyond me why WeatherLink software is now bundled into WeatherLink.com requiring a user account to download it even though some users use it standalone and couldn't be bothered with WL.com. Mind you one could be cynical there may be some mileage in trying to increase the subscription revenue stream but then there is now no connection between WLL and WL PC in regard WL.com especially with many components claiming the so called Cloud will obliterate the need for WL PC with no further updates etc which is a bit of single threaded thinking.

I remember seeing a version 3.83 on the MB system log of someone I helped, but I can't remember who it was to ask how they got it. Can't find any references online about it at all outside this thread.

The query was are there any documents and/or links in regard VP2 console firmware FW 3.83 and Vantage Vue FW 4.33

After a week the Davis support response has been firmware updates are located on our website
https://support.davisinstruments.com/category/f22g6pbmss-weather-downloads

Last VP2 FW update on that page is 3.80 (21/2/2018), Vue FW 4.30 (1/4/2018) so obviously the answer should have just been NO. Like this page doesn't even list WLIP FW 1.1.3 which has been out now for almost 12 months.

The Davis support ain't what it used to be.

I contacted Davis tech support live chat, and their response is basically that it's not publicly available with no reason given, and that they don't recommend keeping your console up to date unless something is noticably wrong with your console. The representative then directed me to the support email as far as when/if it'll be available for download.

If firmware updates fixes issues why would she say they don't recommend them if nothing is wrong per say ?

That's the million dollar question. If they go through the trouble of making a new firmware, clearly something was wrong with the old to necessitate replacing it.

Some firmware fixes are sometimes specific to hardware and or use cases were bug manifest it self... I also have the feeling that Davis knows that not all are capable of upgrading the firmware and  and avoid a customer ending with brick units...

One of the recent fixes for the Vue console was improvement to the heat index calculation. If you don't upgrade, you're running inferior firmware. At least, that's my logic. If there's an upgrade available, I'm installing it.

Well that's logical and obvious.
But if a firmware update its to update Chinese language, Am I going to update....?

It's firmware for a weather console, so I'd like to believe they'd probably wait for some sort of other hardware-related fix and include it with a language update. I doubt someone would take the time to update the firmware solely for a language update that does not apply to them.

Exactly my point. Not everything calls for an update. That's my point. I am not saying Davis is right for telling u don't update if you don't have too... Obvious bugs, fixes, and updates are a must. Davis tech seem as they are very careful to tell someone to just update. It's a Russian rullet game for them.... Oh u told me to update my firmware! Replace my 20yr old console cause is your fault that it bricked! Imagine? LOL

No not everything calls for an update but if systems are being released with different firmware then at least most companies would release the changes? Like why put out a new release if it does nothing.

Not all Davis users are fools and not all Davis users update for the sake of an update but that is a decision individuals make. When I have a system with a particular FW then I want to know why that is so and what it actually does over the previous version.

Now all the ducks are lining up who can feel a FW subscription coming on

I decided to update my Pro 2 console from 3.12 to 3.80.   It went fine without a problem.
