Looking to change from Davis to Ecowitt
« on: May 03, 2025, 07:18:12 PM »
My Davis console is dying and I have issues with the anemometer wind vane. I've been running the wyfy2logger and don't like the new Davis console. I'm looking at the Ecowitt HP2560-C7 TFT console along with their WS80 ultrasonic sensor and WH40 rainfall sensor. I will be sending data to WU and CWOP. Also I would like to set up a data logger. Any suggestions?

CumulusMX is very easy to use with Ecowitt systems to capture data.

Keep in mind that the WS80 has computer chips, and periodically gets firmware updates. :)

Updates are done by USB cable, which may not be convenient if your WS80 is up high. :) See this thread: https://www.wxforum.net/index.php?topic=48383.0

My solution is to stick with a traditional WS68 (with rotating cups) that has no firmware.

Have you considered having Davis refurbish the station?  It used to be $200 and they go through the whole station including the console.

I'm stepping away from Davis. I'm tired of Weatherlink and don't care for their new console.

If you are moving to Ecowitt, you don't actually have to buy a console with a screen at all.

Choose one of the 3 available GWxxxx console/gateways, feed your data to Ecowitt.net and use an under-used tablet that you already own to display your data. Or use a PC monitor, or a phone etc.

If you are uploading data to data logger, say CumuluxMX, you can skip uploading data to Ecowitt and just access the CumulusMX data directly (via tablet, monitor or phone).

If you choose the GW3000 gateway, it has an SD card capability. Data writes to the card, and CumulusMX can 'backfill' data from the card. This is useful if you experience a power failure and the CumulusMX system loses power. However, you would still need to use a UPS of some sort to keep the GW3000 running.

Note that even without a datalogger set up, the GWxxxx gateways have a local IP address on your network, and have built-in webservers. So you could just go to that IP address with whatever device you choose (tablet, phone, PC etc) to view your data.

If you are moving to Ecowitt, ....

Seems from a lot I have read the only obvious weak point is the rain sensor that is low and subject to splash out. This has mitigation ideas available.

A lot of options for expansion.

I am sure I saw one on the corner of a farm field the other day. I'm guessing the white box below it with fair solar panel housed a cell modem.

I have a Ambient WS-2902 with an Ecowitt GW3000 data logger feeding Cumulus WX. Cumulus resides on my PC and not on the web. Eventually I will set up a weather web page.
Ambient Weather: WS-2902, IP Observer v4.6.2
Ecowitt: GW1000B: v1.7.8, GW1200B v1.3.8, GW3000B v1.0.9
Sending weather data to, Ambient CWOP, Ambient Weather, AWEKAS, Ecowitt, PWS Weather, Weathercloud, Wunderground, MADIS, and APRS
CumulusMX dashboard. V4.5.2b4505

Got everything running but haven't connected to wifi yet. Wanting to get everything calibrated first and haven't mounted my rain bucket. I like the 2560 console.

What set-up did you eventually choose?  :?:
Just out of curiosity  ;)

Along with the HP2560 console I ended up buying the Ambient WS5000 array for a lot more money because Ecowitt wouldn't sell the WS80 to USA. I also got the WH57 lightning detector and the WH40H rain bucket. Everything is working  well and I believe I have everything set the way I want. We had a storm pass by early this morning with 12 lightning strikes but little rain. I don't have the WH40H outside yet.

I'm really enjoying ecowitt dashboard. It's much better than weatherlink. You can see my station in weather station pictures. Next is connecting to cumulus and cwop.
