Weather Station Hardware > Ambient Weather and Ecowitt and other Fine Offset clones

Model Numbers and Parts Compatibility Fine Offset (Ecowitt, Ambient, and others)

(1/1)

This Post and Thread is Under Construction.
A lot has changed. There are now newer sensors and there are version of the WS-2902 that are compatible with optional sensors and older version that aren't. Confusing I know. I'll get back to this soon to see how to update all this.
This thread is locked for now. Will possibly be unlocked when completed.

There are several companies selling Fine Offset hardware. We informally call them all Fine Offset clones. Fine Offset doesn't directly sell any hardware. These reseller companies put their branding on the hardware and often use different model numbers and even different part numbers for the same stuff. There can be several differences though to keep in mind. For example one reseller brand may only provide a certain frequency for their sensors and consoles, which means that mixing brands would not work as the frequencies could be different. Even when the frequencies match sometimes the parts can possibly not be compatible because of firmware differences by each company. The purpose of this thread is to explain these differences and help users to better customize their stations and provide more options. Do also keep in mind that some reseller companies sell Fine Offset hardware along with other hardware that comes from yet different manufactures and consoles and sensors not listed here are most likely that and therefore not compatible with the Fine Offset hardware.

Can't decide which console to get? Then get more than one console! It is a popular option to have both an HP2551-C console and a GW1000 for example sharing the same sensors. You can have multiple consoles (with or without display)

Using Ecowitt part numbers listed (Other vendor's part numbers in parenthesis like Ambient, Froggit, etc.) - These are not intended to match complete model numbers. If these parts match a complete station model it is a coincidence.

NOTE: Ambient branded consoles only work with Ambient branded sensors even if the frequency matches. But the other way around is not a problem as long as the frequency matches; Ecowitt console (915MHz) with Ambient sensor works.

1 HP3501/3500 looks like the Ambient WS-3000 console but is totally different. The Ambient WS-3000 is running different firmware and only works with Temp/hum sensors and is not intended to be a complete weather station.

2 There is a non-WiFi version of this console sold by some resellers like Ambient, model WS-1900. It looks identical but cost less and make for an excellent 2nd display.

3 Local API 3rd party software currently compatible with GW1000; Cumulus MX, Meteobridge, Weather-Display, and GW1000live mobile app. Currently in very early development; WeeWx.

4 WH65 sensor array can be bi-wing or tri-wing. They are technically the same. The difference is only in design. Internal sensors are the same. The bi-wing is a newer design and may fair better in dealing with snow build-up. Some resellers only sell one or the other. If the console is compatible with the WS80, WS68, or WH40 then any of those sensors will override the equivalent sensor on the WH65.

5 WS80 is picked up by HP3501 on the display but it does not upload this data to any service. It may work in the future with firmware upgrade.

6 Lightning sensor not yet available.

7 Water Leak sensor not yet available.

8 Soil Sensor not yet sold by Ambient Weather. Coming soon. Available from Ecowitt for non-Ambient consoles.
