Title: VWSaprs version 2 has been released
Post by: Meteorologica on January 18, 2011, 04:09:33 PM
Just to let everyone know that we have released a new version of VWSaprs. You can download it from http://www.meteorologica.co.uk/APRS/VWSaprs.zip

Most importantly is the fact that this version will run with any edition of VWS, not just the Internet edition. This should allow even more people to be able to send data to the CWOP network.

This new version is Vista and Windows 7 friendly and can save configuration data without needing to be run as an administrator.

It also adds a number of new functions that weren't available in previous versions:

1) Pressure sent by Davis weather station owners is now QNH rather than the Davis calculated QFF, and is therefore more accurate for users at altitude reporting to CWOP.
2) You can now remove specific sensor information from the data stream so broken sensors now don't send bad data.
3) Luminosity can be added to the data stream.
4) Its now possible to send data every 5 minutes
5) The number of weather station types has been increased
6) The weather station type is now sent in clearer English rather than the archaic and unreadable coded method previously used.

"1) Pressure sent by Davis weather station owners is now QNH rather than the Davis calculated QFF, and is therefore more accurate for users at altitude reporting to CWOP."

Would you please define "QNH" and "QFF".

Thank You.

George

QFF is the method used by Davis to calculate sea level pressure. It involves temperature and humidity to calculate the weightof air. MADIS prefer to use a simple adjustment using a standard air weight for their sea level data, this is QNH, also known as Altimeter Pressure. These two sea level pressure values becomes quite different for users as altitude increases. Now, for Davis users, we are finally sending the required pressure value to CWOP. Other stations types don't calculate QFF so this doesn't matter to them.

See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Qff and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/QNH

Hi Tim
There seems to be a bug because my Temp and Dewpoint have gone wacko  Temp is reading 327 instead of 64 degrees F.

P.S. everything disappeared but you still get the box with the tabs but there is nothing else showing and to get it back you have to stop then restart VWSaprs......

Same here. I'd recommended that you go back to using the wxreport.txt file because I only update my database every 30 minutes. I do not want to increase that rate as it will  eventually fill VWS's database up to its max and then it will quit running properly. I also have the same problem with all of the tabs displaying nothing. Just a blank space. I then have to keep restarting the program to bring back the displays.

I do like the fact that we're trying to add the CWOP functionality to the base edition.  Using the dbase file seems to be the only way to do it without upgrading.

Perhaps we could have a choice of using either the dbase method or the wxreport file.

Andy
You can fix that by putting a VWSaprs icon in your startup folder.  At least it is working for me........

Same problms here. Once the program is started and then when you open it back up, all the data screens are blank. Nothing but tabs showing.

Also, it only sent an update once and then stopped. Restarted the program, it would send 1 update and then none after that.

Fell back to the old version and all is working fine.

I'm liking the direction this is headed, but there seems to be a few bugs to work out.

One thing I noticed, since they don't use the wxreport.txt file anymore and they instead use the database file, VWSaprs sends an update every time my VWS database updates (which is every 30 minutes). I suggest that they go back to using the wxreport.txt file. It all worked fine before they changed it.
I also don't understand how to use that calculator thing for the latitude and longitude.

I'm sorry but we will not be going back to using the wxreport file, the data it contains is not correct.

As for people having issues, could you please specify what operating system you are using along with your VWS database timer settings and the interval you have set in VWSaprs. We also need to know which version of VWS you are using. We've tested it extensively on different machines and haven't had any problems this end so we need to see what commonality there is.

Hanford, would you mind sending over a copy of the last couple of days worth of data from your dbase.csv file please? You can simply open it in notepad, remove everything except the last few days and save as a new name like test.csv.

That will help us identify what is happening.

I run a Windows 7 Home Premium, VWS database timer interval: 30 minutes, VWSaprs interval: 5 minutes, VWS Version 14.01p33 Internet Version.
I would still like help understanding how to use that calculator thing in VWSaprs for getting my minutes. Because my location is way off of where it should because you now only let us enter Degrees and Minutes, and not Deg. Min. Sec.

Okay, we've released a temporary update to try to identify and fix some of the problems you are having. Please download the latest version from http://www.meteorologica.co.uk/APRS/VWSaprs.zip

1) We have altered the page repaint so if you were having problems with the tabs appearing empty after you restore the program from its minimised state can we see if this behaviour has altered in any way please?

2) For those that it only sent the data once, we need to identify if the problem lies with how your computer writes the modify date to the dbase.csv file or something else is happening. On the third tab there is temporarily a coloured blob below the data string. Can you watch this and see if it changes from red to green at the interval you have set in VWSaprs. It should stay green for a few seconds then revert to red. Please let us know what happens.

Thanks

The reason we no longer accept seconds per se is because thats not how the data is formatted for CWOP. However, there are 60 seconds in a minute so divide the number of seconds you have by 60 and add this to the minutes to get your location eg 34 mins 53 seconds would become 34+(53/60)=34.88

Andy, ignoring the display issue. Does your version send okay to CWOP and continue sending after the first packet?

Well I know how to use that calculator after you helped me. It sends data packets every 30 minutes because of my database settings, so I can't really tell right now if its working right or not.

Okay, we've identified that this blank tabs problems seems to be on Windows 7 machines. We managed to replicate the problem here and are looking at a solution.

The blank tabs appears to be linked to the minimize to taskbar function. We've disabled it and uploaded a newer version. This newer one seems fine on our Win7 machines. Once we have solved other issues we can return to the minimize function.

You would want to upgrade if

1) You are running any Davis product since the pressure being sent to CWOP in older versions was the QFF pressure and the new version calculates the pressure as QNH which is what MADIS require.
2) If you want to send Solar Radiation data
3) If you want the ability to turn off sensors if they are known to be offline, broken or sending false data.
4) You want to send data at 5 minute intervals

Its not compulsory to upgrade, the old version has run happily for over 5 years, but users have asked for these other items and the Davis pressure issue has been a problem for quite a while.

"I'm curious, if the data I'm sending with the old version is spot on with CWOP, why would I upgrade?"

Steve,

I can't answer your question, but I think I can enlighten the situation somewhat. This is reasoned opinion and not known fact. Ambient is one of the largest sellers of Davis Weather Stations. Ambient is also the author of one of the two largest weather software programs. CWOP has created a market for themselves by soliciting owners of personal weather stations to give them free weather reports from locations around the world. CWOP pays for this data with quality feedback in the form of the beloved Green Check or dreaded Red X. Where does CWOP get the STANDARD data they test your data against? They won't tell us but I would bet that, in the case of pressure, it is obtained automatically from airports. Being obtained automatically from airports means it is Altimeter Pressure rather than Meteorological Sea Level Pressure which WAS all that Davis PWS reported. There was a large discrepancy ,especially at higher elevations, between SLP that Davis reported and Altimeter pressure that CWOP required (Note that WD, Cumulus, and VPLive have sent the proper format for years). After years of fighting, with Ambient refusing to send pressure to CWOP in the form they needed, this latest upgrade does that. However, there have been two major happenings in the meantime; one, the Ambient forum was dissolved over this issue and two, Davis added the ability for its stations to provide the pressure data in the format CWOP required. So now, since your elevation is approximately 1000 feet, if you want your station to display the barometric pressure to correspond to the local TV station, and also send info to CWOP in their format, you should upgrade your software and change your Davis hardware to SLP.

FWIW ( a lot of opinion and some facts thrown in )

George

Thanks George, that sums it up well!

Please note that Ambient still only support Meteorological Sea Level Pressure so I've had to make VWSaprs calculate Altimeter Pressure itself, one of the reasons we are not using the wxreport.txt file anymore.

Ok, I understand that, very good explanation. So what I have to assume (I need to check my console) is that my pressure = airport Altimeter Pressure, I'm always within .1 mb in CWOP of (yes, I agree with you about comparing us to the closest airport) my reference. What I display on my webpage is basically the same thing the airport shows that's about 5-7 miles away. And I'm also assuming that I must have the proper combination of hardware/software setup that I don't need the new upgrade?

Still have the issue with it not sending data. When the program is started, it gets the correct data from the dbase, populates the catagories with the correct data and the green light flashes. The updates are done every 10 minutes. The next update time rolls around, the green light flashes, yet nothing is being sent to CWOP.

All firewalls are turned off, all anti-virus is turned off, so it is a wide open pipe. Stop the program and fire up 1.9.8 and off it goes, data to CWOP.

I'm stumped.

Agree to the above. Yesterday used 2.0 and high temp reading, and high barometer reading. It only updated once. When I looked at the program all the information in the tabs was gone only white.

Now using 2.0.5 it took over 6 minutes for the orginal data gathering. DB timer is 1 minutes with VWSaprs set to 10 minutes. Still the high temeprature problem it is now 174 degrees and the barometer jumped up. I waited to post this message and the program did update at 10 minutes (improvement over uesterday) however it is 170 degrees and the higher baro reading.

Sorry but this program is still broke.

Anyway, will leeave it run for a bit just to make sure all is well.

Now using 2.0.0.5(7 Now) and everything is updating to CWOP just fine.
That is after I read this forum thread; it took a while to set the location.
And the first time I ran it I did have to tell my XP system to allow it to run.
Also in regedit.exe under run as in the old version I did have to reboot one time
and uncheck the button “Always ask before opening this file”

2.0.0.7 Is now out, I will want for real final version 2.0.0.x
And my stats are way off. Now I guess it will take another year or so. Bummer

Leave it on automatic otherwise the fallback facility gets disabled, don't try entering your own server details unless you really have a good reason to do this.

Better still, try out the new version.

Can you try setting the send interval to 10 minutes and see what happens? Also, could you copy the last few lines of data in your dbase.csv file and email them over? You can open it in notepad to do this. We need to see if there is something unusual about what is happening in your data.

It seems strange that you are only able to send one data packet to CWOP and also (from your other thread) send one data packet only to PWSweather.

Thanks

I understand the differences between the old and new versions of the Program.  The main one being the way Davis pressure is calculated then reported to CWOP.  Well I have an honest question and I'm not looking to pick a fight.  I have a 99% CWOP rate over 52 weeks.  CW7762

Barometer
Average barometer error:  -0.4 milliBars
Error standard deviation:  0.4 milliBars
That is less then 1 half of one milliBar.  I have a Davis.  When is close enough close enough!  There are tons of non-Davis Stations nowhere near as close as mine is.
Why would I need to be concerned with theese numbers?
By the way the closest METAR station to Peotone is the Kankakee Airport.  It is KKK.

Barometer
Average barometer error:  -0.8 milliBars
Error standard deviation:  0.5 milliBars

What isyour altitude? That makes a huge difference to the calculation. Also, how did you get your barometer right? Did you adjust it on the console or in software?

Now to fix VWS with this new version 2.0.0.8 or what it might be this hour.

"Do I set the altitude? Software"
"Did you adjust it on the console or in software? console"

Do I now set the altitude in console and in VWS Software

Do I correct it in console or in the VWS Software

Do increase or decrease to correct it? http://weather.gladstonefamily.net/site/C4784?tile=10;days=1.5#Data

Will it fix it on its own?

We have spent many years getting this right and now I have start all over.

What is your altitude? That makes a huge difference to the calculation. Also, how did you get your barometer right? Did you adjust it on the console or in software?

My altitude is 715 feet above sea level.

I have my console set to the proper Lat and Long, and the proper elevation.  When I initially set it up I waited until a high pressure moved in. I was forecast to stay a while. This provided Baro readings that did not fluctuate too much.  Then I tweaked the readings on the console to read the same as the airport.  There are two other airports 30 miles away in different directions, so when all 3 of the airports were the same or within 1 or 2 millBars, I could do a final tweak to my reading.  That was 2 years ago, and as you can see the data is of high quality.  There is no problem with adjusting the console.  You just have to do it when pressure is not fluctuating and you can get  a few different sources near the same reading.

That's why I do not see why I would need to upgrade to "improve" my reading.

I do however understand that if your station is at a couple thousand feet, and the nearest METAR is close but a thousand feet off in elevation, this would provide a challenge to calibration.  I am lucky, all 3 of the airports are within 100 feet of my elevation, and all 3 are in different directions.  In fact they are all 25-30 miles away!

Humm, all appeared to be working fine, but not this morning.

The temps are not being sent correctly. We are currently at -10. The CWOP data screen shows the correct values, but it is sending 0 as the temp. Looking at my overnight data, it appears that 2.0.0.7 starts sending nd contunues to send 0 as soon as the temps hit the - values.

My site is CW1773

Yes
Do I correct it in console or in the VWS Software
Console

Do increase or decrease to correct it? http://weather.gladstonefamily.net/site/C4784?tile=10;days=1.5#Data
Increase your console's pressure by the looks of it

Will it fix it on its own?

Installed it and nope, not fixed. - temps still show 0. The only difference now is, it shows 0 in both the CWOP data screen and what it sends to CWOP. Before, it did show the correct temp on the data screen.

Dropped back to 1.9.8 and the temps are correctly sent.

Hello everyone,I would like to share my experience with VWSaprs.
I own a desktop that runs on windows 7 64 bit.
I use wlink/dlogger 5.8.2
        VWS 14.01p33
         WUHU 1,0,216,173
I am using VWSaprs2.0.0.0 download
VWS and VWSaprs are both set to  deg f,mph, inhg, altft, rainin
datbaseupdate timer and VWSaprs send rate are both set to 10min.
when i downloaded the program i replaced 1.98 with 2.0.0.0
I have not had one glitch yet.
My one issue was when restoring the program from the task bar and going to the stat or vws info page it came up blank.I quickly reloaded the program and figured those parameters are set and to leave those two pages alone. The report page comes up everytime on restore.I had a minimum temp of -0.5 this morning which registered as 0 which is ok.My fear is should i update to the latest version or leave well enough alone.I like having software up to date.
Also as a side note i believe wxreport.txt file was also uploading windspeed and gust in knots.I like the fact it uses the database.
                                                         Thank you

We no longer send the date and time as its tagged on automatically when the aprs servers receive it. They completely ignore the time we send thm so there is no point sending it!

Wind from 217 degrees @ 2.0 MPH Gusts to 16.0 MPH   Temp 39F  Humidity 58%  Dewpoint 25F   Rain last 24 hours 5.93 inches   Pressure 1017.9 mb

How do i adjust this error with the rain report?

There has been very little rain and my collector is packed with snow yet it reported 5.93 inches of rain for 24 hours????

Take a look through the last 24 hours worth of data from VWS. Once you have corrected it, restart VWSaprs and it will reread the data from VWS.
Title: Re: VWSaprs version 2 has been released

The day before yesterday evening the CWOP report page from CW8854 (my PWS) had a message stating that no data had been received for 2 hours.  I trouble shot the issue.  Data was flowing fine to wunderground.  I noticed that the VWSaprs configuration box (I had previously used) was not available and the APRS file Settings box was different from the picture in the manual (and what it was originally).
I reloaded the software from the Ambient Weather website.  Nothing changed.  I checked local stations, they appeared to be updating.
I restarted using the directions in the pdf file that accompanied the VWSaprs.exe file.  I have been back on line for 12 hours now and it seems to be working.
Questions: (1) I noted that the RAW data (aprs & weather) no longer carry a time stamp.  Is this normal?
(2) There must be another way to let CWOP members know that a change has been made to the basic software, other than requiring their station to hang-up.  Maybe a banner indicating that we should download the new software?  Or... are we duty-bound to read the WXforum?  Just askin'.
Thoughts?

2) Possibly, we have an idea and may implement it in a later release.

Let me sort of tag along on this data not showing theme.

First up hardware is VP2, software is VWS 14.0 P35

I had been using the original VWSaprs software and the data it uploaded allowed me to see my station CW1845 on the GRLevel3 radar screen via the outbound CWOP/APRS data feed from www.allisonhouse.com (http://www.allisonhouse.com)

After switching to the new VWSaprs version my station vanished from the data feed, and after a conversation with Tyler Allison he was able to determine that because there was no longer a date/time stamp on the data upload to CWOP they in turn were not sending the data out with one, and as result information aggregators had no way to know if the data was current, stale or spurious so their parsing programs would delete that stations data before sending it out to their subscribers.  The date/time info also shows up in the information bubble when a user of would hover their cursor over a station site.

Once I went back to previous version of VWSaprs my station reappeared in the data feed and has likewise returned to its rightfull place =D> on the radar screen.

Then they are not handling the data correctly. When they retrieve the data they should tag it themselves with the date and time and not rely on the embedded date and time which is not guaranteed to be correct. This is an acceptable way to send the data as per the full APRS specification. See also the explanantion at Philip Gladstone's page http://pond1.gladstonefamily.net:8080/aprswxnet.html
Title: Re: VWSaprs version 2 has been released

Acceptable? yes.  Best approach? No.

You should allow the user to use the local time if they wish.  If properly configured, the local system will _always_ have the more accurate time.

Not only is it no guarantee that the local machine will have the correct time, but there is no guarantee that the server will receive the data within a few seconds of the report (could be hours later).

By solving for the first condition you ignored the second.

We solved for the second and ignored the first.  We are going to solve both conditions shortly.  I would ask that you do the same.  If for nothing other than allowing customer choice.

We prefer to limit the user's customisation to the minimum since allowing too much freedom has caused far too many problems in the past.

I, like Bob, have been sending info to APRS for quite sometime without any implications. Updated to 2.0 thru 2.10 and problems galore have started. I had my updates times scheduled for every 15 minutes but noticed that 30 to 40 minutes would go by before updates were noticed. Brought the update time down to every 10 minutes but still much the same problem. I have been using Tyler's APRS placefile for a couple of years with almost never any problems. So many problems lately that as of today I stopped using the placefile. Not Tylers fault. The placefile is updating as mandated by the script but no info to update.

Lonnie,

Just drop back to the VWSaprs program you had been using and your station will reappear on the Allison feed.

Also looked like prior to about Saturday the outbound feed was having some problems as stations kept appearing and disappearing...then whatever the problem was went away and things have stabilized again.   Don't know if it was an Allison problem or something else however there seemed to be little rhyme or reason as to who was showing up on the screen, although it seemed to affect CW data more than NK feeds.

The latest version is working well here - but I've been noticing that it consumes a lot of system resources when it's doing a CWOP update.

I'm running VWS on a 3.2 GHz P4 system; 1 gig of RAM and XP SP3. Normally it hums right along but when VWSaprs starts it's CWOP update the system bogs down; task manager says that VWSaprs.exe is using 78% of the CPU.

That seems excessive (to say the least). What can be done to cut that down to a more reasonable level?

I just updated to the latest version of VWSPARS posted on the web site from version 1.98 and it seems to be much better for me that the older version. My reason for saying that is I had been getting CWOP QC that told me my barometer was totally out of spec. with this new version it seems to be more inline with what CWOP was telling me.

My thanks to the programmer.

I'm running VWS 14.01 p46 on Windows 7 home premium, desk top PC, using a Davis Vantage Vue monitor.  I have the latest version of VWSaprs.
My problem is my info isn't getting downloaded to CWOP DBs.  I've got my VWS DB timer set at 5 min. update intervals and the feed from VWSaprs set to feed down stream at 10 min.  The VWSaprs data base 'found' indication is green and the VWS data base file is being updated on 5 min. intervals.  I have the 'Auto Server Select' and 'Feed On' boxes checked, but no down load seems to be happening.  If I place my mouse pointer over the  VWSaprs icon in my task bar I get a small pop up message stating 'VWSaprs waiting'

Any ideas as to what might be going on?

Just tried updating to V2.0.1.0, running VWS V14.01 P43 on Windows XP Pro.

Entered all of the settings, set it to update every 5 minutes.  It hasn't updated to APRS in 51 minutes now.  Tried resetting VWS, restarting the computer, unticking minimize at startup, nothing seems to be working.

Anyone where I can find the "old" version of VWSAPRS?

Tried to revert back to V1.9.8.0 and it seems to work - Except  - I can save the configuration changes.  When I try to save I get error box "Failed to set data for VWSaprs".

I'm trying to save config like - Autostart at PC".
