Further advice on new purchase.
« on: February 06, 2025, 04:30:18 AM »
Just moved this from the welcome section to continue...

Welcome to WxForum from East Tennessee!

.... probably looking at the ecowitt system again

Allow me to suggest looking at individual sensors, rather than the combos 7 in 1,  5in1, etc.  The benefit is that if an individual component misbehaves, its a lot easier to diagnose, and cheaper to replace just the problem component. Plus, individual sensors can be mounted at their optimum height, with only the anemometer up high. That improves accuracy, and makes maintenance easier.

This kit is an example https://shop.ecowitt.com/collections/weather-station/products/gw1102
... but with Ecowitt you can build your own kit.

Note that kit I linked has a 'gateway', but that gateway does NOT have a display. I have little use for a dedicated display in a fixed location. Instead, I use my phone and various PC browsers.  If you do want a dedicated display, perhaps you have an  older tablet that isn't doing much -- it can easily be repurposed into a more or less 'free' display.

Thanks for the idea, certainly worth considering.

I have an old Google Nexus 7 Gen2 Tablet, not sure if that would be enough to use as a weather display, also plenty of Raspberry Pi of various versions one running HA.

A couple of questions on the Ecowitt gateways.

I see various Ecowitt WiFi gateways, GW1100 , GW2000 and just found a GW3000
Is there much difference in these?

I was also wondering if I could use the display from my old Froggit WH3000SE to link to one of the new Ecowitt sensor packs.

You will find everything you need by searching in https://meshka.eu/Ecowitt/dokuwiki/doku.php.

The Wiki linked above has the full details. The GW2000 has all the capabilities of the GW1100, plus IoT functions, plus an Ethernet connection. The GW3000  has all the capabilities of the GW2000 plus adds an SD card storage read/write function, and also has an external antenna to improve the effective distance of the sensors from the gateway.

I set up a Home Assistant server about 2 months ago. I found that HA integrated the Ecowitt gateway into HA very easily.
