Private data?
« on: October 22, 2020, 03:39:07 PM »
As looked at the new ecowitt.com www-site I noticed their map of basic measurements on mainpage
Attached a screen capture in New York, USA area.

Have all these site owners given the right to publish this info on their www-site?

Can I deny it? (I really don't want the weather info on any public sites...)

Yes.

I have multiple consoles , and 1 is set to private. It does not appear on the map. My sensors that are private are for my server room at the office. There is a little bit of a strange thing when I click on the map with that console selected on Ecowitt.net (Understand you have to be logged in as the station owner) and it goes to my area where that is, but no pin or marker. So for anyone else in the general area , just zooming in, or zooming out , won't reveal the location for someone else doing the same thing who may be looking for other sites.

In other words, you can't find it

I have the same findings as Rover. You can register an account without an Ecowitt device and the map will send you to an map location geographically close to your IP address. If you set your device to Private Data then your device won't show up on that map for others. Note that if you are logged onto your Ecowitt.net account in the same browser, your device will show up on the map for yourself.

This is a pretty nifty tool because you can actually check nearby public Ecowitt stations and export their data for comparison purposes, if so desired. It also shows more sensors than other online services would, such as Weather Underground.

Jeje2,

I don't know how deep your concerns are on a privacy. Please give us a little more insight to your concerns.
For instance, I keep mine private, well because it would not be a benefit to anyone so no point having it on a map or discoverable

Well tbh I'm not that concerned about own privacy if it is only outside temperature, wind speed and -direction.  But as our house yard is very very unsuitable for reliable wind (direction & speed) and rain measurements I really don't want it to be publicly seen. (I have an old PWS in use and I know how poorly it is behaving...)

I don't want to share weather info that is only describing the situation poorly and extremely locally.

Then of course the other measurements (specially indoors) are abso-fraking-luutly only for me - or those to whom I separately share them.
