Time is not correct on WU
« on: September 04, 2019, 09:48:32 AM »
Setup my WiFiLogger about a month ago.  Worked fine (after I got the setup right).  Set it up on WU, all was good.  Now a couple of weeks later, I notice the time being reported at the top of the screen is actually UTC even though the setting says UTC-4.

If you look at the graphs, they are all correct, regarding time.

Any ideas on why the time is not correct on the main screen?

Thanks.

I checked mine but the time is ok. Did you restart the wifi logger?

When I look at your link I get -
access_time 9:59 AM EDT on September 4, 2019 (GMT -4) | Updated 5 minutes ago
which I presume is correct

Enjoy,

Paul

Yes that is correct.  Thanks for the update.  My display shows the following, so it must be something with my computer setup.  Will investigate.  This is what I see on my screen.

Funny thing, when I look at the website on my cell phone I get the exact same issue (Time is show as GMT not local).  It has to be something about my setup. But will check using another platform.

Is the mobile phone using the same WiFi? If yes try using cellular data connection.
I suspect it is because of your network configuration and/or ISP.

Yes it is and that is something that never would have crossed my mind.  I will try via cellular on the mobile phone.

Next, I have to figure out what to do to the modem.  I just changed internet providers (got fiber optics) and its a new device.

Edit - Update:  Just checked again using my iPhone with Wifi turned off and had the same issue.  Time displayed is four hours off.  I wonder if it might not be the way I have the station configured.  Its subtracting 4 hours from my local time.  When I first log onto the website the time is right then, after if finishes the load, it subtracts four hours and display the current time minus four hours.

The first thing I do to any modem is put it in bridge mode and connect my own router.

That was what I did when I first got internet here.  I figured the modem would fail and need to be replaced and then when replaced I'd have to redo all my WiFi connections.  Not a big deal just a deal.  So I purchased a Netgear Nighthawk modem.  Weill it failed when the modem failed (wireless part only) so that did not work.

Now, where I can I just use wired connections except for my mobile devices or devices that don't have a wired input.

Okay good. Sometimes IP addresses can be associated with incorrect location and then some websites will show the wrong time (time zone). So that rules this out.

I think you should explore your router's settings to be sure time zone is correct there.

WU is asking for UTC time.
WiFiLogger is calculating UTC time from local console time and time zone from console settings.
But in my opinion time is ok. I have checked with Google. Now should be 6:40pm and it is.
Info on WU is also proper. UTC time 10:40pm corrected (GMT -4) = 6:40pm

Thank you for all the suggestions.  I will look at my router, in the near future, and see it there are settings.  And I was just trying to make sure, I did not have a setting messed up somewhere.

Thanks again.

I just realized you edited and updated an earlier post, where you say you tested with iPhone with WiFi off and got the same results. That is important. It means that it isn't your home network. But what is baffling is that it doesn't seem to be the WiFiLogger either because the time appears right for everyone else that looks at your WU page.

I'm looking for a common thing between your phone on cellular data and your home computer on different ISP that is causing the time to show up wrong for seemingly just you.

I think the common link is your Weather Underground user account. Try using a Chrome incognito tab and don't log into Weather Underground. See if the time is correct then.

I am using a Mac so I only have Safari on the Mac side. but I have a windows 7 emulator which has Firefox and I just logged into the same URL and the time was right.

I don't know if I was logged in or not when using it in Safari and right now its not letting me log in.  Interesting.

Going to restart Safari and see what happens.

Restarted Safari and I could log in but the time was still off where I was logged in or not.  What happens is the time starts out right and then changes to four hours off after a few seconds.  I did not let the Firefox run long enough to see if the same thing happens there.  Its a bit slow running  as an emulator.

Oh well there is a common link. Apple MacOS and Apple iPhone. Same browser Safari in both cases. And you tested with Firefox now and the problem is not there. Looks like WU has a problem with Safari. I just tested it with my iPad and the time was wrong. Happens for any station I visit.

Solution: Use a different browser than Safari.
But this solution does not work for iOS, because on iOS the browser engine is still Apple Webkit (what Safari uses).

It is interesting that it just happened, within the last several days.  I shall see if I can report it to Apple.  Requires some work but can be done.

Many thanks for working through this with me.

Well I think this is more of a Weather Underground problem than an Apple problem. I think WU probably changed something on their website that broke Apple Webkit (Safari) compatibility.

Or maybe they add time zone to browser which is not set, or they have broken time zone function.

I will see if I can send WU a message and ask that they look at it.

Sent a feedback message. I did not know that WU was part of the Weather Channel, which is were the feedback form went.

Hi, James!

I’m sorry you’re experiencing this problem. I have reported it and it is in the queue to be fixed. It appears the only browser it happens with is Safari. I hope you will continue to be patient with us while we work on this and other problems.

Thank you for using Weather Underground!

Update:

I don't know when it was fixed but it has now been corrected.  I have had about three Safari updates over the past month or so.  Just checked today and the time is now correct.
