Beware of this
« on: December 28, 2014, 02:07:41 PM »
at 2:45 am I received a phone call from a very angry person, claiming I hit his car, scratching it, breaking his mirror off and tail light, and put my phone number on his windshield. Of course that was a lie, but  I kept denying this and he continued to get angrier with threats and finally I said to him I was calling the police.

Then I did call and noticed that the caller ID was IP Voice, which got my brain working.  The police said that  http://www.prankdial.com/  might be the thing.

So I did more research as I was wide awake now, and find that  a person puts in the number of the person they are pranking, then another phone number that is someone else as a fall guy .  They can listen to the call as it is recorded and do whatever they want.  I believe the fake call asks for insurance information as well.

There are other "pranks" from that site that can be very upsetting and damaging if someone gets it and thinks it is real.   Be aware.

More likely a third-world scammer (2:45 AM being the key since its daytime there) calling from a free IP voice gateway via the Internet.....

could be one of my wife's former students who is an a hole.   I would love to find out. I would drink a tall glass of prune juice and send them a plastic bag of home made fudge .

I have a daughter and granddaughter.. so if the phone rings, I'll answer it, but..  was sound asleep and didn't recognize the caller ID right away. Next time, well I am going to have some fun with them.

If it happens, oh I will have fun with it.   I had an Asian sounding person call and ask me if I was at my computer. I asked them if they were from Sony or North Korea.  they hung up.

I gets calls about 1-2 a month but its from our local P.A.T.H. or Personal Assistance Telephone Hotline...the suicide hotline as it is known around here...but mainly they get calls from people with problems. Mine are usually the drunks who misdial because there is a one number difference between mine and the hotline. My last 3 digits are 885 and theirs are 855. At 3am I want to say "yes this is PATH please hold...." and hang up or "wrong number...but you think your life sucks...I work for a state that is broke...can I join you on the ledge ?" However, legally I can't so I tell them they have a wrong number.

What I would like to know is why someone would waste time and effort making a prank call system like this? Perhaps someone with no girl friend and too much time on their hands.

I agree. Imagine if they used all that effort for something good or useful. We only answer phone calls where we recognize the number. Everything else goes to voicemail.

I like my usual calls from the credit card scammers on how I can lower my credit card payments....I like to have fun with them so I press 1 and wait for an operator.....

Them: Would you like to lower your credit card payments ?
Me: Would you like to lower your credit card payments ? ( I continue pretending to be one of them...)

or another....

Them: I can help you lower your monthly credit card payments. All I need is some basic information.
Me: That's 3 large pizzas one half mushroom, one half mushroom pepperoni, one three cheese with extra sauce...(I keep going and reading back the "order" as fast as I can.
Them: I am calling to help you lower your credit card bill.
Me: Maam, I am sorry but you cannot get the special with extra cheese but if you order a medium I can give the special price and I can add the extra cheese to that.

or my best one.....
Them:....(you all know the opening line)
Me: Oh thank god 911 operator, he's got a gun, oh no no no don't.....I will give you anything...dont shoot dont shoot...click....

Them: Would you like to lower your credit card payments ?

Me: It's about time that you called!  I'll be waiting at my mailbox on the first of every month for the check that you will be sending me from lowering my credit card payment below zero!

Playing along on the phone is one thing, but I did it face-to-face last month.  Took my pickup to the dealer for a small repair.  One of the sales guys must have been bored, because he went through the service book and called my voicemail.  He left a message saying that he had a buyer looking for my very truck (it is an uber-rare 6-speed manual), and *guaranteeing* that he could put me into a new truck without raising my payments one cent.  The next morning, you can bet that I stopped by his desk in the showroom when I was there picking up my truck...with the clean title and lien release letter to show that I had no payment.  Sadly, they didn't give me a free truck. :(  They couldn't even sell me one on the spot, because it would take 4-6 months to order a 6-speed manual since nobody stocks them.....
