Java Problem
« on: September 12, 2006, 03:43:07 PM »
Anytime I access a web page (including my own) that uses Java my pc takes forever to open it up.  Even when it does open up it very slow and clunky. I have plenty of memory, 1024MB and a 1gig proc.  Also have a 128MB video card. I can use MS Virtual Machine fine as long as I use IE but I would rather use Firefox. Can't seem to find any help on Sun's page. Most help is  for developers. Anyone have any idea's?

I was having that problem on my work computer--I just hate it when I try to surf the web at work and it's slow!!

So... what seemed to help, and it may be totally irrelevant, I deleted all temporary files at:

c:\documents and settings\"my user id"\local settings\temporary internet files\content.IE5\...

then there are 4 folders on my machine, and I deleted all the files in those folders.

Perked my machine right up...

If you haven't done it already you should go to java.com and get the latest version of the jre. There is a bug in earlier versions that can cause slow performance, system hangs and other problems. I haven't had any java problems with IE or Firefox since I upgraded.

By default JRE starts the Java console at startup which really slows things down. Poke around in the Java Control Panel for an option that says "Do not start console". If it isn't selected, select it. You can always change it back later.

You might also want to go to http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/ea.jsp and get Java SE 6 Beta 2 JRE. I have been running it for a while with no problems. It seems to be a bit faster than Java 5. Don't forget to turn off the console.
