Forum not accessible from the UK and other countries!
« on: July 12, 2007, 07:42:33 AM »
I have to say I thought this forum was dead! For the last few months all I have ever got is an error message saying I didn't have permission to access the server. This is from the UK. I've tried it on several machines at different locations around the UK and hence with different IP addresses and the same message.

I gather from other users on the AMbient forum that this is happening for other non US members.

Whats up guys, have you become totally insolar and are now ignoring the rest of the world???

If you wonder how I got here this time, its via a web proxy. Not the best solution but at least it showed that the forum was still here!

Saw the posts on Ambient.  Dunno, maybe some sort of DNS glitch.

Your problem is puzzling... :?:

twijland joined today from Zoetermeer, Holland
Colin Miles joined 04 Jun 2007 from Llannon, Wales
Hitbylightning joined 05 Apr 2007 from Melbourne, Australia
etc...

I don't think the problem lies in "us guys" being insular.

Well, the message I always get is

Forbidden
You don't have permission to access / on this server.

Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Apache/1.3.37 Server at www.wxforum.net Port 80

It would seem that I am not alone either!

This can't be a DNS issue as its obviously getting to the server but it does seem that ranges of IP addresses may be being blocked by the board!

The only range of ip's that is blocked is 59.229.127.***

You wouldn't happen to be in that range by chance?
The only other ip's that are blocked are individual and all from spammers.

I'd commented to Chris that on my recent Europe trip to UK, Denmark, Germany, Netherlands, I'd seen the same problem (Forbidden access).

I think Chris has some extra blocks (outside of the PHPbb blocks) that may be causing the issue.  I've sent him a PM to check on it since he has the cPanel for the site.

It has always been the intent of WXForum.net to include discussions from fellow weather enthusiasts from around the world.  We do recommend that all discussions take place in English, but that's the only general expectation.

We'll get the access fixed... thanks for your patience!

Best regards,
Ken

And just to add to what Ken said, should anyone learn of _any_ problems with the forums, whether they be access issues like this one or some other usability issue, please let us know! We can't fix it if we don't know it's broke!  :!:

Nope, not ignoring the rest of the world. I had a problem with an overseas hacker about 6 months ago and implemented the blocks into my personal weather site. Unfortunately those blocks propagated down to wxforum.net. They are now removed and the rest of the world should be able to access the site now. If not, just let me know.

Thanks, access is back to normal now!  8)

The trouble is that when you get a message like this you just assume there is a major problem and that the forum is bust and as you can't access it you can't report it as a problem

There was no login from Aus either.  As of today I can get back on normally.  Someone on the ambient forum suggested using an anonomyser to get in, which I was able to do yesterday.  The last time I was able to log on normally was 22 June.
