Possible failing GW1100
« on: April 23, 2022, 10:46:41 AM »
I've been having problems with my GW1100 for some days with strange issues and it not responding and I just caught it misbehaving on Weather Display. It had the wifi light flashing which should indicate not connected however I could ping it no problem so the network thinks it is there but the only way to recover it was a power cycle. So is my GW1100 defective or heading that way or is there a strange f/w issue?

Hi Stuart!

I've had problems similar to the ones you describe a few weeks ago. Now I have a solution that has worked rock solid for several weeks. I started a guest network with only 2.4GHz for my GW1100. Then I let the GW1100 feed my WeatherDisplay via the API at Ecowitt. I do not know if it has anything to do with your problems but, it has worked without interruption for me for a long time now. My GW1100 is updated with the latest firmware.

Best regards Jan.

Hi Jan,

In your case the 2.4 GHz was probably the answer. The downside potentially for some in using a guest network to do that is if they are using anything on the main LAN to connect to or receive from the device. I mean have to either switch networks or connect to both (if possible) .

Well I think it is the GW1100. The manual says if the wi-fi light is flashing it is not connected but I can ping the device and get a response so it IS connected but it is not responding which means the f/w is hung up. Brian has done some work on reconnecting the crongw1000 program which I can see trying but getting connection refused.

I've just had anther issue with my GW1100 in that CumulusMX is gathering data just fine but custom server data is not being sent and the HTTP access is being refused and my own PHP script to get data gets nothing back . WSView+ sees the device but will not connect to it either. The custom server data has just started again intermittently and the HTTP access has come back for now. Updates to Ecowitt seem to have the odd gap where one 5 minute update on the graph is missing every now and then.

This seems like a bug in the F/W to me as it should not hang like this.

Last night I had a similar issue again with my GW1100.  Some time ago I switched my WD to use the GW1000 and my CMX to the GW1100. Now WD is working flawlessly on wifi.  Each day I connect a Linux install of CMX to the GW1100 alongside the W7 CMX install accessing Linux is my testing system. Last night the W7 CMX stopped gathering data and couldn't reconnect also the GW1100 stopped sending to Ecowitt and the custom server sending stopped, the wifi light was flashing. However the Linux CMX install continued to gather data perfectly. Also no issue with WD on the GW1000 so there was no issue with wifi. The only way to recover was a power cycle of the GW1100 and so far its been OK.

I have raised this with Ecowitt again to see if they will investigate this time, previously they said it was a wifi  issue which is rubbish!

Sounds like if software has an established connection it continues working and new connections/reconnects are failing.

It could be you are just overloading the gateways with too many requests? They have limited CPU available.

Also if you are using WD or CMX or xxx to get data from the gateway, then I'd let that software do your other uploads like WU, again it just takes a bit of load off the gateway itself.

In some ways I agree but Ecowitt make no suggestions as to how much these gateways can cope with! When this happened the W7 system got an error because the gateway disconnected but the same thing didn't happen to the Linux one it connected in the  morning and stayed connected till I power cycled it.

Also I was very annoyed with the Ecowitt response previously as it showed they do not really understand networking  IMHO.

With all the connections you are making, you may not be able to resolve your issues until you get a GW2000.
I really don't think the developers of the GW1000/1100 expected that many people to push the unit to the limit, HAH!, they were wrong.
