Moved Davis and Added WS5000 Ambient Weather
« on: July 16, 2021, 06:00:45 PM »
I finally had time to move my 5 year Davis VP2 location to the chimney and added a Ambient Weather Sonic Wind during the process. I put the rain gauge, lightning sensor and a WeatherFlow Tempest station closer to the ground on their own mount as well. The Tempest is just for fun observation so I am not concerned about the surrounding wind blocks affecting it. I used 1" galvanized pipe and fittings for all the install. The Davis rain/solar/uv is not pictured but is 5' off the ground using 1.5" Conduit. Thats still its original location for 5 years and counting since its been accurate in that spot. Enjoy the picture, I got lucky enough to capture lightning as well! [tup]  The tree looks very close in the photo but its actually a descent ways away from all the equipment.

Awesome setup! How does the tempest track to the davis unit temp. wise?

Thanks,

The Tempest is actually fairly accurate in comparison to Davis temp and humidity. The only thing I have noticed is that Tempest does a poor reading when it comes to quick high gusts. I guess because it only takes a gust reading every 3 seconds according to support staff, it might miss the peak gust during that 3 seconds. Even when I had it located next to the davis anemometer, I would get gusts 30 mph on davis but only 22-24 mph on Tempest. Thats when I decided to move Tempest and put Ambient WS5000 with Davis. The Tempest is now just up for fun since its data website site is easy to share with others to view. Rain was also way off on Tempest by 3x the amount. I ended up logging its rain and my manual rain gauge for Tempest support and they were able to recalibrate it. Rain has been fairly accurate since on Tempest.

Just checking in here - how is the WS 5000 performing compared with the Davis?

I am quite pleased to say the WS 5000 performs practically identical to Davis. The 5000 has one slight advantage that the wind readings are more accurate since its the Sonic Anemometer and does not have to take time to "begin spinning." I personally have been using the 5000 lately for more of the data collection than Davis which is something I never thought I would be saying. Both are quality and accurate systems.

The WS5000 also samples faster than the Tempest or Davis... Once a second rather than 3 seconds.

Sorry... the ultrasonic is the Ambient WS5000 station.   I was comparing the 3 stations I have.   WS5000, Davis VP2 and Tempest device.

I have both instruments (and a Davis VP2).

Ambient 5000 has a shorter sampling window and is consistently higher... especially with gusty conditions.

How is the temperature shield vs tempest?  I find the tempest to be top notch.

I think the Tempest is better with temperatures under sunny conditions.
