Tornado Warning for Wayne Thomas (Smyth County/Marion VA)
« on: May 08, 2009, 10:53:58 PM »
Looks like Wayne is really under the gun.  A storm with a long "tornadic" history (currently 68 decibels) is getting close.

Meanwhile, we have a weaker storm rapidly approaching here in Roanoke.

Update:  Now 70 decibels.

Kevin,
That storm definitly looks very impressive, not to mention scary!  I hope and pray that everyone will be ok and that there will be no touchdowns.
                    God speed!!! [-o<

Looks like Wayne's getting large hail now.  Hopefully the worst winds will stay to his south.

Yep, that's what's left of the derecho that came out of MO this morning.  Glad it's fizzling out.

Law enforcement officers in Lebanon, Va report "numerous" trees down from this storm.

After clicking on the mapquest location link on his Web site, he's a little further west than I thought... NOT good... probably a lot of wind damage in his neighborhood.

Like me about 100 miles away, Wayne lives within feet of I-81.  Here's the radar about the time that storm passed nearby.

Sometimes it takes a little while for things to reboot.   I hope all is well.

Thanks Guys!!!

We had a power outage that took down my system here except for my GR3..fortunately that UPS worked LOL!!
This was the first TOR warning for this county I remember and it was a rather impressive storm!

We didn't suffer any damage except for some tree limb type debris here but just up the road in the town of Marion they had it worse.
there were numerous trees down and flooded streets as well as nickel sized hail that accumulated in the road in a few spots that looked worse than most of this past winter's storm. We patrolled the immediate area around us here and have concluded we faired awfully well!

County LEO dispatch is still getting reports of downed trees and power lines within the town of Marion as well as some localized flooding just west of the town limits..NWS has issued a FFW until 6 am so they may be expecting a little more.

Here's a look at the scene as it went through tonight

Dang, that was enough to scare the socks right off of a person.

Wayne, As for a UPS. I feel your pain. I could use atleast one more my self, 2 would be better. Atleast the one on my weather computer worked and the one one the modem, hub & router.

Thanks,
Anthony

Thats for sure! We had so many interruptions before the final outage that when that happened I just unplugged the power supply. When we got power restored I had a time getting it to boot! XP is not happy with getting cut off in midstream of something I guess!! Oops reminds me in all the confusion I didn't get a back up at 11:45 last night!

We talked to several area people today and there was considerable property damage in Marion..windows blown out, water damage, tree damage and the like.Sugar Grove got hit hard as well with lots of tree damage and hail. an unofficial report from one person we talked with gave an estimate the size of a base ball ! That's not weather common to these parts! the main damage path tends to be from Hungry Mother State Park, through the upper side of Marion and on across the mountain to Sugar Grove. Grayson county had the potential for a weak tornado as the radar was showing the signatures at one time but neither us or the NWS has been able to confirm that yet far as I know. Gonna ride out that area after lunch today.
AEP still is nowhere near complete on restoration with 1091 customers still out in the county..sure glad I'm not one of em  otherwise I'd be isolated from the grid and generating bout now LOL!

Looking at the models today there is a possibility of a repeat but I do believe most of the activity will train to the south and east of us.

As I read your reply, the thought I had was, "he has got another page to his website if he takes his camera out there today and takes pictures of the storm damage."

Thats right.. I am planning on adding a photo section either this afternoon or tomorrow .
We have been out today getting some shots of the tree damage and structural damage to add to that page.
We are going to make a sweep southeast of here in just a few minutes that should yield some good shots as well.
I tried a few last night but the darkness and dense fog made for crappy photos!

Thanks for asking..stay tuned

You mean to tell me you have not had any rain today? How did you manage that?

Thanks,
Anthony

Beats me!! We had a little ..actually too little to measure while I was mowing the yard.
I think it may have rained a little while I have been gone this evening but I just got back in and haven't looked yet
Most of the activity was just as I thought it would be..to the east of us and it as nothing near the intensity of last evenings storms.

EDIT: What pictures I have of the damage right now are up and running
http://www.smythweather.net/photo/storm.htm

I will be adding more as I get them..

Thanks!
