You're very welcome, Mark!  We all missed this forum and are happy we can put up a temporary one while the original weatherforum.net is in limbo.

Hey Drew, about letting other members know we're here. The links on your map you made a while back with all the members web sites should have email contacts. Just an idea if you want to pursue it.
Sorry Drew, just noticed you already put a link up for it.

Thank you...thank you...thank you!

After suffering through Weather Forum withdrawl for over 2 weeks, I happened to stumble on a posting from another forum explaining what happened. Thanks to the crew who established the temp forum until things get straightened out. I can now resume a somewhat normal life.

You're very welcome Joe.. A lot of us were suffering from PWWS (post-weatherforum-withdrawal-syndrome ) and now we can get our weather-and-camaraderie fix again!

It's very rewarding to see folks are rejoining this temporary forum rapidly.. it's only been 24 hours since it was announced on weather-watch, weathermatrix and ambient, and already 20 (from the original 370+) members have rejoined.

Thanks to all of you for helping keep Gary's vision alive!

Wilmington NC checking in...

Also glad we've got something back up and running--thanks to all who made it possible. And I'm sure Gary would appreciate you all keeping this alive, I can't imagine he'd take it any other way...

As an FYI, since I don't frequent the other weather forums except rarely, I managed to get a hit on weathermatrix thread when I Googled "weatherforum.net", that had a recent time stamp, and so I kinda stumbled upon this...

When in doubt, Google!

Can you add key words for indexing that would help point people here?

A suggestion for the future, would it make sense to keep an off-line copy of all the email addresses of members so that in the case of something like this happening, a mass mailing could be sent letting everyone know what's going on?

   It was just terrible!  I was stumbling around the net during one of the hottest spells in recent times and couldn't find the forum!  I knew Gary was moving, and had some problems with the site DNS, but then I read nothing more.  I must have missed the message about this place when it was posted.  I instinctively knew that you guys were somewhere...  Finally my brain kicked in and I drew on one of the special, little known techniques I developed with message boards back in 1982  and did a search on Ambinet for "Weather Forum Gary".  Imagine that, using the search feature

Anyway, now that I've found everyone let me thank you all for making it happen.

Glad to have you back, Rick, to our temporary watering hole :-)

I guess I should bump the threads on Ambient, weather-matrix and Weather-display forums to put it in folks minds again.

In the 7 days the forum has been up, we now have 41 folks as members.  Thanks to all for keeping Gary's vision alive!

Best regards,
Ken

got a brief email from Gary Friday...... :P

Just to keep the folks up to date, Gary is still with us but working 18hr days at his new Texas job and still working on his final move arrangements from RH to Texas, he's just too busy right now to get involved in the forum.   As I get more information I'll pass it on

I talked with Gary by phone today.  He's working 18 hour days, sleeping on an air mattress in his (mostly empty) home without internet access, and hoping for a let-up soon in the big to-do list.

He does have a backup of the original forum taken about 12-July (SQL backup) on an external hard-drive in Virginia, and all the rest of his site on another computer (also in Virginia).  Both of which won't be accessable until the big move from VA to TX.

He really wanted to thank the folks for all the efforts to keep the forum running during the difficulties with the domain expiration/hoster expiration, and he will get to the forum when time permits.

A huge *thank you* that I can't adequately express to you and to everybody for keeping weatherforum alive!!!  I'll be there as soon as I can.

Best,
Gary

Some late news..

Yesterday, Gary's domain 'weatherforum.net' left it's 30 day stay in 'redemptionperiod' status, and has now entered the 5-day 'pendingdelete' status (customary for the registrar process).

All is NOT lost, and Gary replied to my mail with this:

Quote
Thanks, Ken.  After we talked, I used the email address I got from you
for Schlund, which was returned with a response from 1&1. They gave me
info on redeeming, which required I sign up for an account with 1&1
(what strongarm tactics?), which I did.  THEN they wanted me to prove I
was a US resident, so I had to fax them a copy of my passport, and it
wasn't until yesterday morning that they gave me both an account and
contract number, which I needed for the redemption form, which I
promptly faxed to them.  HOPEFULLY, they'll actually renew it for me,
but we'll see...

Thanks again,
Gary

I still have a 'safety net' in place for the domain should it fall in the cracks.

Gary does have an offline backup of the forum taken a couple of days before the DNS ceased to work, but it's in Virginia -- he'll address that when he returns to pack up house and family.

Just thought you'd like to know what's up.

Ken

I appreciate the update Ken.  I'm sure Gary really did not need that particular headache along with everything else requiring his attention at the moment.

Once again I'd like to thank you and the other's involved in setting us up a temporary home here.

The other forum owners would probably be getting a bit tired of hearing us fuss about the loss of Weatherforum by now in their forums.

Hi,

I lost track of Gary and the WeatherForum Board too, but the Texas Press have caught him at work:
http://www.statesman.com/news/content/news/stories/local/08/10eoc.html
http://wilco.wss.bcentral.com/PIO/CEOC/default.aspx
http://wilco.wss.bcentral.com/PIO/CEOC/Gary%20Oldham/Forms/DispForm.aspx?ID=1

Nice picture of Gary with the almost Hill Country in the background on the Williamson County site.  Next spring they will update his official pictue with him riding a long horn through the blue bonnets.  I'm hoping Gary will get us some great deals from the Dell Factory Outlet and off with good time should we get a speeding ticket in a po-dunk little town like Taylor where they WILL bust you tush for 9 mph over the bogus 35 mph limit through their little town (but I'm not bitter).

It's sad, but eNom.com is now in possession of weatherforum.net and is holding a private auction for the domain.  Auction has 3 bidders, but I can't find a way (yet) to get in on it.  Auction closes on 23-Aug.  Sent a note, but no response yet from eNom.com.
