Recent Snow Storm
« on: February 07, 2008, 02:39:54 PM »

The recent snow storm in Michigan seemed to have caught the forecasters off guard. A few days ago there was no storm in the forecast. Then they saw its potential development. It started snowing here yesterday morning. Many places closed during the afternoon and some schools dismissed early. Nearlyevery school in our county is closed today. This was the second day in less than a week that nearly every school closed.

I took several measurements, and we received 12 inches in my area from this snow event. There were reports of 17 inches about 30 miles north. Yesterday afternoon I shoveled snow while it was still coming down, and exactly one hour later I went out and measured 4 additional inches. They we BIIIGGG flakes. Last night one of the meteorologists said that a viewer had emailed him saying that it looked like someone was having a major pillow fight outside -- and that's exactly how it looked!

This wasn't even a blizzard, as there wasn't much wind. It was just a long and heavy snow.

I'll second that! We've had more than enough and would gladly share some with others.

EDIT:  Acchh! The kids' school was just cancelled for tomorrow. That makes three snow days in a span of 7 days.

Hey, Mark.

Yeah, it's amazing what difference a little distance can make.

This winter has brought the most snow I've seen here in the 14 years we've lived in Michigan. Growing up in eastern South Dakota, however, I saw a lot more snow there than here. Here it snows and melts, snows and melts, but because it's colder there (despite being at the same latitude as here), there the snow sticks around all winter, so it keeps getting deeper and deeper. Ironically, they've actually had very little snow back home these past couple winters. Go figure ... seems the snow has moved south (to KS and NE) and east (to MI).

The blizzard is coming in Michigan this weekend in the U.P.  With the passage of the arctic front and 40kt winds mixing down to the surface it's going to be fun.  The wind will kill the dendrite growth making very fine powder and with the wind on top of it.... Yee Hah!!  The central U.P. will get an advisory and wind chill warnings but the west end and east of Marquette is going to be a mess.  But what the heck, it's Feb already.  Already looking forward to the spring storms.
