GRL3 ftp stops intermittently
« on: October 13, 2007, 09:03:06 PM »
Anyone know of a way to save the radar image to a file which could be uploaded along with my other data using VWS or another ftp program?  Oddly the ftp function in VWS as worked pretty reliably for me.  I was thinking if I could get the radar into a file I could upload with VWS like I do my WeatherLink files that would solve it.

Additionally the problem is I usually notice the radar is not updating while I'm at work and not at home.  Currently my only way of logging into my home computer is with LogMeIn which also kills GR's ftp.  I'm still working on getting GRL3 to run at startup and automatically start the ftp uploads.  Even if I could get that going I'd hate to have to reboot the computer at the end every Logmein session just to get GRL working again.  I read in the GR member forum about some other VPN setups that don't kill GRL but I've not been brave enough to go there yet.  It's the port configuration and/or forwarding that scares me about them.

I don't think you can...

My question is - why is it intermittent?

How many products and what quality are  you updating?

Only uploading the basic BR1 image with additional roads and cities added in.  Shows 54Kb file size when viewed.

I suspect it stops updating if my DSL connection momentarily drops.  At least that is one of the things that will cause my Rapid Fire uploads to stop.  It will work fine for anywhere from 24 hours up to several days.  Also I suppose it very well be something I'm doing on the computer that tweaks it.  Another good reason to have a separate weather data computer I guess.

(Sorry, I'd forgot I'd temporarily pulled the image of my web page this afternoon.  It's back up on my front page now.  ;) )

Yeah, I have it on a dedicated server (low cost $260) and it maybe skips an upload every once and while (due to the huge upload load I place on my webserver and the 3 max concurrent FTP uploads).

It's been uploading like a rock since I bought it.

I changed a couple things this afternoon that may or may not help it.  I found an updated driver for my Lan card  was available.  Also I moved GRL3 from a secondary USB hardrive back on to the main C: drive.  That alone really speeded up the start up of GRL3.  I originally put it on the USB HD as I was not sure how large a file I was going to end up with when I bought GR3.  Since I'm content with the basic image for now and not using any large color or topo maps, I'm not using as much hard drive space as I thought I might be.  This computer is the same old 466Mhz I've used all along.  I upgraded the memory to 512Mb and moved to WinXP some time ago but still running the original 6gig hard drive.  With the software all running it's idling between uploads at 60%+ cpu usage and often runs below 100Mb free memory with VirtualVP, VWS / Rapid Fire, VP LIve / CWOP, WeatherLink, Cumulus, Oddcast (NOAA Radio) and GRL3 all running.  The Cumulus program I'm playing with is also having some ftp problems.  I think I've probably just reached the point that even though I try to stagger the uploads I'm under powered to get it all done.   ;)

Why not install a secondary slave HDD?  You should be able to get a 60Gb (or bigger) for about $50.  Use the C drive for the OS and essential apps only and move all your weather and other apps and files to the secondary.

Or is this a notebook you're talking about?

It is a desktop but I don't think I have enough room left inside unless I would remove one of the two CD drives.  Due to it's age I keep debating whether to bother or just replace the whole unit.

Since getting GR3 back on the C: drive it has only stopped once for me.  When it stopped updating both on the computer and sending ftp I was not at home.  Still have not figured out exactly what causes it to do that (providing GR is not just deciding to do it on it's own for some reason).

I removed LogMeIn and installed TightVNC tonight. So far it has not been nearly as painful to setup as I thought.  But I have yet to try porting it outside my home network.  At least now I can log in with my laptop around the house and not mess up GR3 plus TightVNC is working more smoothly than LogMeIn being a more direct connection here at home.  I like this set up much better!

Any words of wisdom as far as keeping VNC secure especially if I open it to the internet?

After some reading on the subject of making Tight VNC more secure I've decided to put internet access to it on hold for now.  I'm seldom away from home more than a day and it looks like they have something in the pipeline to make it more secure on the internet without going to the trouble of setting up SSH tunneling to encrypt the data.  In the meantime I'll open a new thread in a more appropriate section of the forum if I decide to go ahead and give it a try.  ;)
