Weather Station Hardware => What Weather Station Should I Buy? => Topic started by: russelljjackson on December 28, 2021, 10:21:00 AM

Hi! Im looking for a simple weather station for my mom. However, she is very, very rural. She has cell service but no Internet or WiFi. It’s kind of confusing as to which stations require WiFi vs those that don’t. Has anyone faced this situation and have any recommendations? Thanks in advance!

More specifically, do all the outside sensors use WiFi to talk to the display inside? Or are there any models that use a proprietary solution for that? Maybe this is a dumb question!

Outside sensors usually talk to the console or gateway unit by radio signal - a simple broadcast 433 Mhz for the US
If your Mum just wants her local data and doesn't care about sharing it all she needs is a standard station and a console to display the data
Something like this

Then you add the sensors to it that you want. There are loads of manufacturers, some supply the console and a sensor package as well (usually an anemometer, temperature sensor and rainfall guage but it varies)
With mobile data coverage she can share it if she wants to
I know that ecowitt has a 4G station -

I assume Ambient sells something similar
And DAVIS stations can connect using this

I am sure there are others, might get pricy with data plans though and unecessarily complicated

The Davis VP2 is either cabled or wireless from Integrated Sensor Suite (outside unit) to inside console, and the Davis Vue is also wireless to the console- no WiFi needed. All data can be viewed on the console. By adding a USB or serial logger to the console the data can be viewed and saved on a computer.
Davis also has options for WiFi, internet, and cell services to send data.
Enjoy,

rainwise has a cell station

I would guess it reports to rainwise.net

If you mom lives in US, something like the Ambient Weather WS-1900A might be a good choice.
