Title: WIFI Logger 2 and Davis Console firmware updating
Post by: xmas111 on November 08, 2020, 04:23:10 PM
Hi,

Has anyone tried a Davis Console firmware update with the WIFI Logger 2 installed in the console?

I want to upgrade from my current 3.15 to the current 3.88.

   Thanks,
    John

Upgraded here with no problem.  Just remember to stop any application that pulls data from the logger before commencing the upgrade.

I just updated my console to version 3.88 with WifiLogger 1. Everything works.

How do you update the console software via wifilogger? Are all settings lost when doing this? I have 3.83 now

Use the update application for the wireless console from the Davis support site  - https://support.davisinstruments.com/category/f22g6pbmss-weather-downloads
When you run the application enter the IP address of the logger, click "update" and all should be good.

The console restarts on completion of the update and all settings seem to be untouched.

And make sure you shut down any program grabbing data from the logger.....ie: Virtual Weather Station, Weather display.....etc.

I ran the update without any problems, everything was fine. Now I notice one thing, I had set the wifilogger 1 to load the weatherlink data every 2 minutes while now it seems to load them every minute ....... however the wifilogger settings have not changed and are set for 2 minutes . For the rest it seems to me that all the adjustments have not been touched, everything seems to work fine

I think it is just the time of the weatherlink app which tells me to update every minute but in reality the data is loaded every 2 minutes as I set. However very interesting the firmware update via wifilogger !!!! Quick and easy

Something to think about, is the update worth the risk to you?  It doesn't always go as smoothly as all the posts here so far indicate.

I have two VP2 consoles and two WFL1's.  Console 1 updated without a hitch.  Console 2 bricked around halfway through the update.

Console two is on its way to Davis to be "force fed" new firmware to revive it.  No idea how much they are going to charge, but shipping alone both ways will be nearing $40 :(

Sure glad I have two consoles :)

My update on my old Envoy went south with the loss of the barometer. After lengthy phone time and trying different things they gave me an RMA. . That was back in Oct. They called on Monday and it cost me $60 plus $12 shipping. They had to replace the board. I will get it back next week. I asked them to only load 1.9. I hope they did. I am now waiting on them to finish converting a cabled console to wireless.

Console 2 would boot and directly to display the last received data... Trying to re-run the firmware would return that the version did not match and therefore bricked and unrecoverable, or that was my original conclusion.

I original tested firmware 3.86 in Feb 2020 which was designed to address the discrepancy I reported between the Console and WLL reporting and this contained the console fix reporting the Improved evapotranspiration (ET) calculation the same as reported by the WLL. So I thought nothing ventured, nothing gained and I downloaded 3.86 and success... Firmware updated without error and then I followed up with 3.88, I was game, and it updated the Console 2 firmware successfully.

You have the same risks as updating the bios of a PC. I had firmware 3.83 and I moved up to 3.88 without trouble. Known improvements throughout the car. The real problem could be either the console has very old firmware or a power failure during the update. In my case everything went well and I will also make subsequent updates if there are any

I have attempted to install the 3.88 firmware and the updater reports "Model number does not match."

I tried the following:

1. Updated version 3.15 to 3.80.  Worked fine.  3.88 still no go.

2. Updated the newly loaded 3.80 to 3.86.  Worked fine.  3.88 still no go.

3. Re-downloaded 3.88 from Davis to make sure the file is not corrupt.  3.88 still no go.

It is a newish console, 4 years old maybe.

Has anyone encountered anything similar? It is no big deal, but it is a puzzlement, and I don't like puzzlements...

Well, it looks like v3.88 is doing some check on your console over and above what v3.86 (wherever that version came from - can't see it mentioned currently in the release notes) might be doing and deciding that it is not 100% compatible. I don't think anyone but Davis will know the answer here, so looks like an email to Davis support quoting your console's Manufacturing Code.

You are right. I'll e-mail them. BTW, 3.86 and a link to it on the Davis site is three posts up in this topic.
Now that I have re-read that post, it looks like it is a beta test version.  I should probably downgrade back to 3.80, but 3.86 is not giving me any issues and if it is not broke....

Thanks for the reply.

Could someone list the steps to upgrade the console firmware via Logger? I have the Belfryboy cabled USB logger that I had used in the past, but obviously this would be much easier, as I would not have to move the console from where it sits to take it to a PC. I am familiar with upgrading the firmware of the Logger itself, but not the firmware of the console. Thanks, in advance!
