I can report at this time that Kevin's Software is still maintaining accurate weather data collection from the now unsupported Hub. I am still updating Weather Underground and other weather websites that the software supports. What a wonderful surprise. It looks like the hub is making 1-second attempts at sending data to Acurite trying to connect with the server that once acknowledged it's existence and gave it life. I can find no record of it rebooting or shutting down at this time. It looks like the Hub lives on. It would appear that as Jeff Goldblum was correct in Jurassic Park when he said... "Life finds a way" [tup] 8-)
UPDATE: Software has stopped working

It sounds like Kevin's software is giving a good enough response to preventing rebooting.
The next issue will be what will happen when the SmartHUB reboots or loses power. If it does keep sending to wunderground after a reboot, the next thing to worry about will be the time setting. If the time is wrong, that will cause problems with the rain totals, but everything else should continue to work fine.
Now, it may be possible that Kevin wrote his software so that it, not the SmartHUB, is handling the rain totals. Remembering his past comments about how his program works, that might be true. If so, maybe his software will continue to work just fine.
-
As far as I know, the software only reads network traffic from the hub. The software does calculate the rain totals. I have powered down and rebooted the hub a number of times. So far so good. The time that the hub is set to internally is not controllable anymore, so I guess we will see what happens with that.

I'm guessing you're all good, then. I'd keep a good watch on the rain totals, but I expect they'll be fine.

Thank you for your input, George! Looks like I am good for now. Do you happen to know if the new Acurite Equipment will generate the (weatherdata.cvs) file that so many web scripts want to use? My whole web site is based on this one little file for updating everything live. Kevin's software is generating it for me now. I have the web server on a local network so I have a lot of flexibility.

That would be something you'd have to have Kevin.

Kevins Software finally quit updating my server, and Weather Underground. As I heard on another thread... IT'S DEAD, JIM!!!
I can go into debug mode and see current weather Data, but I believe it is not getting parsed due to the Current date/time from Acurite is no longer a part of the string being echoed out. All the data is there though. Kevin if you are watching this thread, I think this is fixable.

So close, but I agree it is fixable.

Well our weather station is still reporting to us via the display console, but my Server and Web weather connections are down. I really like this equipment. Time to move on. Does Acurite still have display consoles with USB ports that allow you to capture data locally as well as send it to Acurite? The new hub replacement is of no use to me as it is encrypted and the data is not accessible. Acurite did a good job at cutting off the data except through them. Reminds me of the mobile phone companies policies. They refer to it as, "Leakage" Screw you, Acurite!
-
Meteobridge is still working... hmmm
-
My 2 using Meteobridges are still working also but has anyone disconnected the power to there hub to find out if it will continue to work? My plan B is to revert back to the USB consoles if I have to but really like the setup I have now. My hope is that someone either cracks the firmware in the hub or figures a easy work around that makes it usable for us to get our data from these devices so we can feed our websites. What is it with these companies that don't give an option to put Our live data on our own networks and give us an easy way for us? Seems to me that opening it up and giving this option to people so they don't have to jump thru a bunch of hoops to get it would draw a bunch more sales. I have a hard time grasping at a reason why these companies won't do this. Maybe Acurite should open source the hub firmware? Sure would be better than turning it into landfill!

I have not powered down mine. On the meteobridge forum, I read where one user did, and had a slight issue at first, but it seemed to clear up after fiddling with it. Also one user started from scratch and flashed to meteobridge again to get online.
I am afraid to unplug mine. I am leaving it alone for now.

Hi all,
I've been very busy the last couple of years, but I'm going to work on removing the "Acu-Rite time" dependency from my app very soon. Stay tuned...
-
Let me know If I can test for you, Kevin. Like I said it looks like all the data is there. Thanks!
Jack
-
I just completed (hopefully) a fix for this issues. I've done away with the AcuriteDateTime variable. I don't currently have a test environment of my own, so I've just sent ColoradoWeather a beta version to test (thanks Jack).
Kevin
-
The beta software is installed and running well. I will send you a report tomorrow, Kevin! Thanks for continuing to support this great Software!
Jack
-
OHH awesome! I sent you a PM kevin a few days ago about this and that suggestion for using PC time but removing the dependency altogether is sweet!
I'd love to test also... can't be any worse than what I'm using now which is nothing.
-
You will be able to download the real deal anytime now. Kevin is a busy guy but he still took the time to fix this issue. I am very happy that it is going to help you out.
Jack
-
The latest version is now available for download.
Latest build is 2019.03.04.2300 and includes the following changes:
Allows continued use of Acu-Rite smartHUB despite permanent shutdown by Acu-Rite. Modified code to no longer require "Acu-Rite time" since this device has been shut down by Acu-Rite.

Awesome! Working perfect! I really hated having the thought of scrapping everything. Now I can keep it going till the gauge breaks and I just get another brand one day.
Thanks kevin!
-
May or may not be related since it started after the shut down of acurite support but is still happening.
My rain gauge keeps saying 1.67 inches of rain even after I delete the rain data file. My screen that came with the station reads fine.. 0.0 since no rain in last 48hours at least.
Have any ideas how or why that would do that and a solution?
At first I thought the gauge was issue but if that was or is the case then the main screen would also report it.

Hopefully in the not too distant future, the Atlas gear will be more versatile like the 5n1 gear where you can use it with software to share with several sites, and such. Until then, i may just put my Atlas away, and go back to the 5n1 gear. I'm also going to take down my fine offset stuff, since the display usb is broken... and the UV/light is broken.
Maybe there will be someone who can sell gear to just read the atlas transmissions, to be interpreted by a software like cumulus or Kevins reader type thing.
-
The new Software continues to work and work well. It is so nice to be able to use the Smarthub still. I use a 5-In-1 and two towers, and a composite of the collected data to feed to WU and PWSWeather. I also use the CVS file output to run live data to my personal web server and weather site. I have many hours setting up this configuration, and I am so happy I don't have to start over at this time. Thanks again, Kevin!

Can you check that link ColoradoWeather and Kevin... the software appears to need something to reset the rain data back to 0.
The hubs aren't resetting to 0 for some reason now.
I delete the rain data file, edit it and still no change it just keeps coming back to that so it has to be the hub.
Can something be done to adjust that also please?
Thanks!
-
I saw your post on the other thread. I am sure Kevin will see this. I will report it as well. Thanks!
Jack
-
Thanks guys... these station changes are driving me crazy.
appreciate the replies.
-
I got a little moisture at my station, bvstation. The rain appears to be resetting itself on my setup. Have you re-powered your Hub?
-
Yes I've power cycled it 3 times, once again last night to test.
Yank cord - wait 2 minutes and plug back in.
As of this morning it reports 1.78 inches of rain and we have had none since mid day yesterday.
Table top screen shows 0.0
-
Pour a little water into the 5in1 and see what happens.
-
Yeah check this out - I just posted this same image on the other thread you replied to.
I changed batteries in the sensor outside earlier around this time with a fresh set and look.
Weird how it did that to the smarthub and not the on table screen.
Ohh and it rained like crazy last night at least .40 so thats why it went up to 2.09

I loaded up Kevin's new build on a Win 10 desktop, and it seems to be working well with my hub. I'm only reporting to PWS at this point, and you can view it at https://www.pwsweather.com/obs/KTXUPATTO2.html (https://www.pwsweather.com/obs/KTXUPATTO2.html). It took a while to get the bridging working, but I lay that at Microsoft's feet, it always seems to be a crap shoot how easy it is.
UPDATE: A couple of hours after I typed this message, the bridging connection started going haywire, so the PWS link is likely showing fragmented data.
I'm firing up an old XP Toughbook CF-71 as a permanent dedicated host for the system. That will give the system stability as Microsoft won't be shoving updates down my throat and causing interruptions.
Thanks to Kevin for his efforts! =D> I wonder if he has a Patreon account?
-
Hi everyone,
I just got back from camping and doing photo shoots in the desert the last several days. Anyone still having issues with the rain data, etc? If so, I can look into it this weekend. It seems it's working fine for some and not for others?
Kevin
-
I think I fixed my issue with wind... had it set to 0 offset for some reason - put back to 100 and I think all fine.
Thanks for checking
-
I have noticed that my daily rainfall total has been sitting at .84" as mentioned previously. I've tried deleting the rainfall.xml file, but each time it regenerates it goes back to the .84". [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
I am still using the MyAcurite app (I did break down and bought an Access when the software stopped working at the beginning of the month). The MyAcurite app doesn't show this rainfall amount. I was wondering if somewhere in the programming that creates the rainfall.xml file if the .84 is programmed in. Is this the number everyone else is seeing who has reported this?
Anyway, I am super happy to be up and broadcasting again since Kevin did the mid-month release to get around Acurite's server shutdown.
-
I believe I replaced the batteries in my gauge and that fixed my rainfall issue.
Try that.

I was experiencing the same thing when I setup my bridged connection originally. I discovered that setting a static IP address for the bridge has allowed it to work happily and not have me get it working and wonder what happened an hour later.
Hope this works for you!

Will do - thank you! I'll report back

I am an idiot. I got to my weather station and discovered it had been bumped just enough to where it was no longer sitting level on its post. As soon as I leveled it with my hand, my .84" of water came out of the bottom. I did pull and reinsert the batteries just to do it while I was out there. When I got back inside, my daily rainfall rate was then reading 0 again. Thank you for the suggestion.

Looks like everyone's hub is dead! Now what are we gonna do?
-
Looks like everyone's hub is dead! Now what are we gonna do?
Mine stopped sending data again at around noon today but I'm not sure if it just needs the gauge reset again.
Do you think they bricked them on purpose?
-
Mine is dead as well. I would lay odds that Aurite pushed out another update to the hub to cripple them so we can no longer use them at all.(just my opinion) I have tried to access the hub locally to see if the firmware had changed, but I can not even do that now. Goodbye Acurite or should I say AcuWrong!
-
No, they did not push out any update.
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
-
Why did the 3rd party solutions quite working if they did nothing? Like I said, I can't even log onto it locally to see the status.
-
I can see my splash page, but the sensors are not being picked up by the hub. I think the hub was bricked as well, since everyone's stopped working at the same general time.
-
Who is everyone? I'm not seeing anyone talking of them all going down anywhere.
-
Some kind of signal was sent to the hub from Acurite, or either acurite disconnected something that the hub was still able to talk to. No other explanation makes sense. I think mine is rebooting over and over now but the lights in the back are still on.
-
Mine stopped working yesterday as well... I thought something was up with my home network and was troubleshooting the bridged connection all night. I want to say around 11:14 am ventral is when my last reading posted.
-
It looks like they changed the IP address of hubapi.myacurite.com to 127.0.0.1.
If you can change that in your local DNS to some other web server, that might clear it.
-
I will try and implement this, George. Thanks for the input.
-
So acurite put in a fake IP address to a non existent server?
I don't think I can change that on meteobridge, or I just don't know how... Mine is .8.8.8.8
-
That does not work The hubapi.myacurite.com and the original IP address associated with it are not resolving. I made an entry in the local HOST file and pointed it back at the original IP, and then tried a local IP, on my network and finally another random Google IP. It is looking for a response to work. That's it. We are done for know. Hello, Ambient Weather... here I come.
-
The used the local machines loopback IP 127.0.0.1. This eliminates traffic and ultimately killed the hub.
-
I guess a PC connect console will still work? I am not even sure of that...
-

Not really. 127.0.0.1 is defined as local host loopback. In this case it's the SmartHUB itself.
8.8.8.8 is google's DNS. You can't alter that, of course. What you're looking is an option to define that hubapi.myacurite.com resolves to some server address other than the one that listed in DNS. Some routers have that option. Some don't. Or you might run a small DNS server on some other machine. dnsmasq is a popular choice for linux. I don't know what's popular for windows these days.
-

Yes. The PC Connect software was updated, but I assume you're using meteobridge instead, so it will still work.
-
I'll have to see if I can fine one. I don't have one since I never thought the smarthub would be fooled with like this once we saw it was still able to read sensors.
-
Because the hub is being routed through the bridged connection on a windows computer useing Kevins software at least... the HOSTS file lets you control IP destinations. We used to edit peoples HOSTS file as a joke. They would type in www.google.com and would be directed to... well use your imagination!

I'm just completely mind blown that they would make it so you can't use them at all.
Is there anyone we can complain to at acurite?
I really thought I had dodged a bullet with the update to kevins software but now its all for nothing.

Well I'm not sure what it says for a fix..I don't see any instructions there that would be simple enough to deal with or worth dealing with to resolve this vs kicking acurite to the curb.

Essentially it's just pointing the SmartHUB to a web server through a local DNS entry.
Installing a program like Acuparse will also do the trick, plus it will fix the other issues for independent operation. It has a good installation guide.

Ehh I don't think that is a windows based program...I really don't wanna dabble with linux at this time again.
Or is it?
-
I wonder if Acuparse would run on WSL (Windows Subsystem for Linux). It might. Is that then not dealing with Linux? Ha.... This is a joke that only techies will get.
-
Hey all. I'm new here, and I'm looking for some help. I have a smarthub that quit working. I still have data reading on my display indoors, so i know the 5 in 1 is working properly. I downloaded Kevin's app, and tried to run it on my desktop, but i can"t get it to work. I followed the instructions as far as I know. I can't get the app to locate my hub. I installed a USB to Ethernet adapter to hook up the smarthub direct from my hub. I am running windows 10, and I'm not a very techy guy. Please help!
-
i tried to attach some screenshots, but the site is not letting me post pictures for some reason. I tried emailing Kevin 4 days ago, and haven't heard back yet.
-
I don't think his program was ever updated to handle the DNS change to 127.0.0.1.
In a nutshell, the host name that data used to be sent to now resolves to 127.0.0.1, which would be the SmartHUB itself.
To make things work again, you need to have a local DNS resolve the name to minimal web server to keep it happy.
-
Thanks nincehesler. I think i know what you're getting at, but is this something i can do myself? Where do i even start with this?
-
It should be possible. In general, you need to make a local DNS entry for hubapi.myacurite.com to some local machine on which you have a web server.
If you have a Linux machine that you can use for DNS, dnsmasq is a popular choice. I don't know what would be a good choice if you have to use Windows.
However, if you have Linux available, it might be easier to use Acuparse in the first place. It's very well supported.
