What brand of Lithium batteries do you use?
« on: November 28, 2021, 12:24:05 PM »
I'm still not happy about my lithium batteries in my WH80 so I wondered what brand folks here use. I currently use Energizer Ultimate but what do others here use, particularly people in the UK as that makes life easier for me obtaining them. What are folks views on the Energizer ones?

Ones that do not catch fire. Kidding I know I am in US , but I use the same energizers as you in my WH65, been there over a year. No idea on a WH80.

Likewise, no problems with them in my WS80 so far either. They are also in my WH32-EP.
Gone through one set on my WS80 which lasted about 18 months.

Thanks guys, my question was primarily because my WS80 is not lasting well on these batteries. My first set lasted about 5 months in spring/summer and these new ones are at 3.06v now after 2.5 months so neither set seems to last well. Ecowitt are supposed to be keeping an eye on it, but I did wonder if I might not be using the best lithium cells.

This should point in the direction of a faulty pv cell/supercap ( or something that prevents the pv cell to function properly, check if the cell has cracks or is somehow covered )
Removing the batteries the ws80 should transmit during daytime ( stopping at some point during the night ), this should mean you have a defective pv and/or supercap.
If it does not transmit at all you should have a defective pv.
If it transmits ok all day and all night you should have defective batteries.

Energizer Ultimate as well. They had them at Costco for a very short period of time, but unfortunately I haven't seen them there since.

I have a Yale smart lock, Conexis L1 and this thing eats batteries, 4 at a time, the best i have found for longevity are the Ultimate Lithiums especially during the winter when i will need to change them once, any other "long lifers" just cannot compare.
Kind regards

Well my batteries have gone up today from a minimum of 3.06V to 3.1V, so recovered a tad.

In some ways I wish that Ecowitt had gone down the route as Davis have with allowing an option to power things like the WS80 externally. Mine is on a 2 metre pole on the side of my workshop and the workshop has power so I could very easily power this from within the workshop, as indeed I did with my VP1 ISS one of the reasons I kept it going for so long. I know they have a way to do this with other devices but not for the WS80 which in my view is a shame.

Nice idea but I'd have to cannibalise the battery door which is not an option while under guarantee.

Says it has a flat cable that might, I have no idea if it will, allow passage.

I have made my own such things in the past for power off my solar battery bank , using something like a LM7803 IC to get me down from 12V DC  nominal bus  I have to 3.3V .

I agree though , would be nice if they just had a barrel connector/ USB/ Etc  to feed external

I've been using Energizer Ultimates but, according to Consumer Reports, Energizer Advanced lithiums are better. So far I haven't tried them though. https://youtu.be/lR8Wqlez9Og

I noticed that too and was wondering. The "advanced" batteries are currently available for sale on Amazon. What's interesting is that the packaging says the Ultimates should last about twice as long but the CU testing showed the opposite. Perhaps it's a difference in use between a camera that uses a lot of power briefly and a weather station that uses a small amount of power continuously.

That is it exactly. The mAh capacity and discharge curve depends on the load profile as well as temperature.

You can compare against the the Lithium Advanced datasheet: https://data.energizer.com/pdfs/ea91.pdf Most amusingly, the criteria/metrics for both are different  \:D/. Should be possible to evaluate this precisely... but I think I am okay.

What is the technical reason for using lithium rather than alkaline?

This only seems to apply to the WS80 not the sensors and they seem very insistent about it.

These are mainly experiences in colder ambient conditions - the lithium batteries last much better than alkaline batteries:

https://www.alexhibbert.com/blogx/2017/2/20/lithium-and-alkaline-battery-cold-testing
https://toolguyd.com/flashlight-tool-batteries-cold-weather/#:~:text=The%20quick%20answer%3A%20lithium.,that%20provide%20electrical%20battery%20power.
https://www.lowes.com/n/buying-guide/alkaline-vs-lithium-batteries

Here in northern Central Europe, winters can also have minus temperatures in the double-digit range - all my outdoor sensors therefore work with lithium batteries. That just creates a bit more confidence.

Energizer ultimate
Presumably, your 2.5 months include use in your old unit.
If you kept the old unit you could try this.

I use Energiser Ultimate's (Lithium) in my WS80, WS90 and WS65.
Everything else is using alkaline, although I might switch to using Lithium in the WS34 and WS35 as these seem to be sucking power.
I did think about using Lithium in the soil sensors (outdoors) but my location is normally benign in terms of cold and I don't seem to have problems.
