Replacement WS90 no solar data, what am I missing?
« on: July 01, 2022, 01:30:00 PM »
OK, received a new WS90 to replace one that wasn't charging. I just noticed that I am getting no solar data. WSView + or otherwise

Maybe I'm missing something. I have not reset the WS90. Anyone have a clue

From Oliver's EAR.

you can do several things
- check if there is by accident a weird calibration factor for irradiance set in the GW2000 - should be 1.0 to begin with
- do a factory reset of the GW2000: hold the middle part with the ecowitt label printed on down for 10-15 seconds - and check the irradiance gain ...
- do a reset for the WS90
- check if the GW2000, with a solar irradiance gain of 1.0 can receive other solar sensors of yours (need to register them before) like a WH65 or a WS80 or a WS68
- do you receive solar data from your old WS90 ?

I haven't done any resets , that was next. I will recheck the gain values, when I looked they were correct. I don't think this is a gain issue as I would at least get a value from VSView or a place holder (tile), nope.

The previous WS90 is completely dead. And honestly I can't remember if I did , I can slap some batteries in it and see if I do.

as you have a WS-2000, you could connect its WH65 array to the GW2000 and see what it gives.

good point ! i'm pretty sure it will , but will go for that

Does anyone know if the RTL_433 libraries have been update by someone to capture the WS90 ?

If they have , I can also do that

It picked up the solar values from the WS65 no issue (GW2000).

This leads me to the unit (WS90). But before I go to Ecowitt, I'll factory reset the WS90 and the GW2000. I'm sure they will ask anyway

(I'll do that tomorrow)

given that the GW2000 reads the WH65 properly, I'd start with a reset of the WS90.
How long has it already been outside ? Just wondering as its supercapacitor is already fully charged.
Mine took some time time to do so ...

It is fully charged, something I knw how to watch as I returned the first one for failing on that.
the reset  of the WS90 will be first
(note, my GW1100 is not picking up the data either, so I know it is not the consoles)

If the top part of the ws90 unscrews easely, as in the ws80 one, you could try to exchange the new and the old part.
You could find that you have a non functioning new solar sensor and a non functioning old pv cell ( or you may find that the new solar sensor connector was not properly inserted ).

As this is a brand new replacement unit, I will do the resets first, then inform Ecowitt.
I had to do as you describe for the first issue.

But before, I go down that road, I will do the reset on the unit.

This has to be very discouraging. I hope you get it figured out and all is well. If not, I bet Ecowitt will go the extra measure to make it right, but still ... such a disappointment.

Ecowitt did contact me, and yes I sent them a query on the issue. This is the mail exchange to this point, addresses removed. All good we are working on it

Code: [Select]
Hello,

Yes, I did. The ribbon cable fell out of the top connector. I relatched it . I then reset the unit. It sent solar value of 2.37K W/m2 and 15 UVI, then it went away again.

So still not working

From: support@ecowitt.com
Subject: 回复: Issue with replacement WS90 unit.

Hi, Rover

Another quicker way: take off the rubber ring from the top, you can turn the top part anti-clock wise to open the top cover, unlock the fpc connector, wait a minute, and then connect it back.

Can you try?

Best Regards

Ecowitt Support Team

I thank you for the replacement WS90 unit , and I thought all was good, as it was charging correctly
However, no solar / UV data is being provided from the new unit.
There is no entry at all in WSView + for the solar data. I mean nothing, not even a place for it.

I have taken the following steps
1. Reset GW2000 – no effect
2. Reset WS90 – no effect
3. Tried with GW1100 , it would not show solar / UV
4. Tried with WH65 to both GW1100 and GW2000 , and solar/ UV data shows for that sensor array
5. I have performed tests disabling all other sensors , other than the WS90 on the consoles. Still nothing
Note it appears that the other sensors are reporting correctly but I have not had rain , but wind, temp, humidity , appear to be working correctly

I believe the WS90 is not sending the Solar data as multiple consoles do not see it.

Please advise any other steps you would like me to try, I believe I have tried all, but open to suggestions
The firmware on the WS90 arrived with 1.1.9 and t he consoles all have the latest firmware.

Thanks for your time,

Does anyone know if the RTL_433 libraries have been update by someone to capture the WS90 ?

If they have , I can also do that

I see there has been an issue raised on github but has not progressed to new code yet as its waiting on decode of data packet from ws90. See https://github.com/merbanan/rtl_433/issues/2072
I have captured some raw packets from the ws90 but have to figure out the packet structure using the code already done for ws80 and the bitbench utility.

Can you share the ws90 packets captured ( with the accompanying wsview decoded output ), preferably in different conditions ( wind, no wind, sulight, no sunlight, rain, no rain... )

Here is one packet I just captured along with live data from the GW2000 gateway. No rain today so need to work it and more data up into bitbench to figure out the packet structure ( https://triq.net/bitbench ). I suspect the rain data is quite a bit different than earlier models.

HI, Rover

Sure, please take your time.

I am really sorry for such problem, and it is obviously a quality control issue. I have passed this finding to our production department for their correction.

Best Regards

主题: RE: Issue with replacement WS90 unit.

I swapped the previous unit top part to the new unit (from the one that would not charge the cap, to the newly received one) . Everything seems to be working as it should and the solar values are there. I have placed the unit back outside and it appears to be charging the cap. But with the recent failures I want to hold off before saying everything is OK for a while.

For info, on the new unit , it is obvious that the ribbon cable was barely in the top portion, as it became loose when I “gently” removed the top. Also there was no sign of the connector marks that one would see on the cable if it was latched correctly. Also the other end was at a slight angle as opposed to straight in, to the connector of the lower unit.

Thanks,
-Scott (Rover)
