WS80 Stevenson screen improvement
« on: June 14, 2023, 03:01:19 AM »
The WS80 Stevenson screen (the plastic device with multiple entries for airflow that covers the temperature and humidity sensors at the bottom of the WS80) is rather too small, and leads to temperature errors of perhaps 3 degrees C when illuminated by sunlight. I replaced mine with a Multi Plate Radiation Shield made by Young, see attached image. Doing this is a bit tricky. You have to cut the interface cable (4-wire SPI bus?) between the sensor and the anemometer, and you are left with only a mm or two of wire on each side. Carefully strip the wires, solder a new 4-wire cable, and epoxy it in place. Works like a charm, and the temperature is much closer to reality when the sun is hitting the screen. You could have just purchased a wh32 outdoor.

It is better to buy Ecowitt WH32EP + Barani Meteoshield Pro.

This multi-plate shield with this sensor has worse performance on solar and low wind days than the Barani Meteoshield Pro.

interesting construction - provided the airflow works properly.

Did you also try to switch on the temperature compensation in your console ?
Do you then still have 3° C deviation ?
I don't have such a big deviation, compared with a WH32-EP in a Barani Design MeteoShield Pro - not that much (3° C) with the WS80 T/RH sensor inside its original little radiation shield (maybe 1-1.5 °C astonishingly).

Of course just purchasing a WH32 outdoor and put it inside your radiation shield would have served the same purpose.
(but admittedly wouldn't have given the fun a constructing this device  ;))

The WH32 without a Stevenson screen will give very poor results in direct sunlight.

The WH32 won't fit inside a Barani Meteoshield Pro according to the Barani website (maximum sensor diameter 20mm, compared to the 42mm width of the WH32). However, I see that the WH32-EP with an external sensor will fit, and this would indeed be an excellent solution.

It is logical that without a radiation shield, the distortion by incident sunlight will be very large and the temperature will not be representative.

For the Barani Meteoshield Pro III there is a WH32EP sensor, but there are people what put there WH32 without a probe. However, it is recommended to use a sensor with a probe, as it has less delay than the sensor on the board. You might even be tempted to change the filter to one that is more sensitive and better against scattered radiation.

Take a look at these links:

https://shop.ecowitt.com/products/wh32_ep

https://www.baranidesign.com/faq-articles/2022/8/01/how-to-properly-mount-an-ecowitt-temp-humidity-sensor-inside-the-meteoshield-pro

https://www.baranidesign.com/meteoshield-professional

Below you have pictures of Ecowitt WH32 EP and Barani Meteoshield Pro along with the factory tip changed to a sintered tip, which is of better quality. It's such a compromise to have less sensor lag, better protection from scattered radiation and more accurate measurement of humidity and temperature.

You can put a normal WH32 into a Davis 7714 (significantly cheaper) if you don't belong to the after-the-decimal-point-accuracy faction  8-)
It has a pretty good performance - of course not to be compared to MeteoShieldPro + WH32-EP

I concur with the last comments regards the Davis screen.
I use this with a WH32-EP and I am very happy with the performance.
You can also get the aspirated version if you live in a location with little or no wind.

If you purchase via Amazon US/E-Bay you can often get the screen at competitive prices

What makes the Davis 7714 better than a AcuRite 06054M or Ambient Weather SRS100LX?  They seem similar, and just as big (From pictures).

I have the Davis 7714 and the SRS100xl. Both have work well. The Davis is much smaller in size and of better quality to the srs100xl.. If you go for the Srs100xl I would recommend buying the upgraded metal mount from AW.

I passed on the Acurite after reading mixed reviews on Amazon. The ecowitt and Lacrosse versions are garbage.
