It's May 4 at 2pm, and the temperature here is a very unseasonable 39.7 with a midnight high of 41.5!  Nevertheless, hot weather will be here again soon, so this has been today's project based on this presumption.

From May 1 to September 30 the Weather Prediction Center generates heat index outlook maps for 3 to 7 days ahead.  This script initially displays a set of maps without a threshold applied.  From there a dropdown menu allows the viewer to select map sets with a threshold of from 95 to 115 in 5 increments.  At 895 pixels the width of the map set is quite large, but must be maintained in order to preserve the correct geometry for the city links' functionality--sorry about that.

Edit 2013 August 24: I've revised the NWS Heat Index Map display scripts by using jQuery's AJAX 'load' to re-display only the portion of the page that changes with a new Heat Index Threshold selection.  In other words it uses partial page loads rather than full page reloads.  This has reduced the number of files in this package from fourteen to three, improved load times, and greatly reduced bandwidth consumption.  You can check it out here on my site.  This version replaces all prior versions.

Hi John,

Your site's width is ideal for this map set.  Looks good.  One of the benefits of modularity is the ability to easily eliminate unwanted functionality as you have done with the threshold maps. :-)

I've added a 'Minimum Heat Index' forecast series to the 'Maximum' series.  The new zip is available in the first post, and the new series can be seen here.

It turns out that the scripts disabled AjaxGizmo by using a javascript 'window.onload()' function.  This problem has been fixed in wx3-7d_select_hi-loheatindex2.php in the first thread above.

Interestingly enough, there is!

While the data shown is based on climatological data from 1981 to 2010 and isn't a 'forecast' as such, it is still an 'Outlook'.  When I get some time to play with it I'll work up a page to display these maps.

Had fun today putting the Wind Chill Outlook script together.  You can get it here.

There were bugs in this script that displayed incorrect tables for the Low Heat Indices.  A revised version dated today is available here, and the 'includes' file is available here.  The heat-index select file, 'hi-select.php', has been folded into the 'includes' file and may be deleted from your site.

Be aware that because of the hard-coded polygonal links in the map to the many city tables, the map display can't easily be re-sized to fit a narrower template.

I've discovered a potential bug regarding the dates displayed vs. the map dates in the wee hours of the morning.  Additionally, using 'Day 3-7' in the title was confusing to some.

Accordingly I've updated the script to display the actual dates rather than 'Day 3-7' and hopefully corrected the potential bug in the early AM in today's Version 20160606.

A revised version dated today is available here, and the 'includes' file is available here.

The wording paired with the drop-down selections and the displayed maps might have been confusing.  A revised version dated today attempts to clear up any potential confusion and it  is available here; the 'includes' file is available here.  The scripts' functionality remains unchanged.
