I live in Mule Creek just south of the fire and we really had a bad day yesterday with the smoke. When the smoke is not flowing our way I can see the flames from the house at night. The whole top of the Mogollon Mountains are on fire. If you look at the banner on my site the very dark area farther back is what is burning, and yes the fire goes from one side of the picture to the other.

Not weather related, but I had no idea the mesa west and north of Rio Rancho (and Albuquerque) had cows roaming it.

I should hit 100 today. It's been trying but some light clouds keep knocking it down to 96 or so. Back up to 98.5 so there might be a chance.

Jay I didn't realize that you were so,so close to that area. I knew you were out west of me. Hope you get thru it OK. That smoke can be a real dangerous PITA. You must have quite a view of it all.

Last night was a particularly active fire night. It looked like they were lighting backfires to control the spread to the southwest down the draws. Lots of area actively burning that I can see. It is still a ways off but seems like they are getting a handle on it, finally.

nmfireinfo shows 15% containment with 227,000 acres now lost.

My winds were out the west this afternoon and gave me some good haze - nothing too bad tho'.

The last few mornings we've been seeing really hazy conditions...by afternoon though it cleared up.

I thought the smoke was staying down there, because I've never once seen Albuquerque extremely hazy during the summer time.

Smoke from the Whitewater-Baldy Complex fire is really bad today in Mule Creek. Visibility down to less than 1 mile. Fire has spread to 259,000 acres and is only 20% contained. Seems like we will lose more than 1/2 of the Gila National Forest before this one ends.

I really feel the pain with the loss of the forest. So far it hasn't been catastrophic over here in AZ, although the Gladiator fire got scary for a while. We all need a good soaking monsoon this year!

I'm currently at 42 days without measurable rain at my site. Not too unnusual for this time of year, but I'll bet it'll be mid July by the time we get any. My "all time" record is 75 consecutive rainless days (2004), but we might give that a run this year.

maybe we'll get to see a rainbow again sometime!

The Gila Wilderness portion of the Gila National Forest was the world's first designated "Wilderness" The National Forest is the 6th largest in the "lower 48" at 3.3 million acres.

One very small consolation is in knowing it was caused by lightning NOT by some dumb-@ss human's carelessness. Losing Nature to Nature seems like a more natural process to me that I can accept a little more easily.

I'm currently at 26 dry days. My record is 119 last FEB-JUN of last year. I've already placed one in my top ten dry spells this year with 56 days. That's not counting trace of less than 0.01".

We have another fire burning up here...the Bear Springs fire. So far, last years Los Conchas burn scar is keeping it at bay, but there's a chance it could scorch north and west. Also started by lightning on Sunday.

When people start these large forest fires, I get disappointed because there goes a fishing trip.

Today was my station's lowest low for JUN 7th - 61.4 beating 2007's 62.0. Only hit 98.6 today and the 'casted 100s for FRI & SAT are now 98 & 97.

Too bad about the fires out there. With tropical storm Beryl and a front hanging up in north Florida this week I think for the first time in a while there aren't any fires burning here.
When is the rainy season out there?

We get the monsoon season but so far, last winter seems to be the wet season. Besides, it comes and goes so quickly most of the time, it's not much help. July (for me) has typically been my wettest of the three months (JUL-SEP) averaging a little more than 3". Last July saw 0.62". JUL 2008 had almost 9".

The winds and low, low humidity really do a number for the fuel supply.

WeatherElement station in line of fire?

A couple of months ago I sold a couple of WeatherElement accounts to a forum member in Texas. One went on-line promptly in Wimberly Tx, and the other was slated to go at a cabin near Ruidoso, NM.

This morning, I heard on the news about the big fire burning near Ruidoso. I checked the WeatherElement map, and sure enough, the Ruidoso station is on-line! Based on the NOAA reports, it looks like they got it on-line on May 29th.

So, if anyone wants to check the weather conditions near the Ruidoso fire, there you go...

Both today (99.7) and yesterday (97.

were new highs for my station. Still can't eek out that solid 100 but might today. Some clouds floating around seem to keep it in check. It should happen today tho'.

EDIT: Nope - only hit 99.9 for a high.

Hit 94.5 at 2PM and began to cool down. Clouds rolling in from the east along with the smoke from Ruidoso's big blaze. Right now it's 20.5 degrees cooler than 24 hours ago! Winds gusting from the south and time to open all the windows!
