Title: PWS monitor for Android/iOS
Post by: buffy on March 24, 2019, 03:08:33 PM
Hi Guys,
I made this simple PWS monitor for checking PWS data values from my Personal Weather Station. It sends my values only to wunderground site and I'm not able to get APIKEY... Maybe you have same problem. That's why I made this app.

Will be great to send me some ideas for improvement.

I'd like add this features
- more accounts
- more charts
- tablet version
- better weather icon choosing

anything else?

Available for Android and iOS devices

Release an ad-free version and you might get some takers.

I tested it out, but my station is reading 15C and the temp graph is showing close to 60C.

thanks for test. is it possible to send me your PWS id for testing?

it looks you get chart values in imperial units

Hello @buffy,
I installed it on Samsung / Android and my two HP1001 and WH2600 stations display flawlessly. It would be good if I could go between these stations. Now I have to delete and re-enter. I miss the temperature and humidity in the room as well as Wind Chill and Heat Index indexes as well as UV in units [microW / cm2]. Such UV has HP1001.

What's the difference between paid and free versions? I am willing to buy a commercial version.

Question: at what stage are the data captured? Is it from WU servers? How many seconds does the application be able to download the current data? I am asking because after refreshing with an icon, new data does not always appear.

Nice little app!

Works great on my Nokia 9 - Android Pie.

I do spot that the temperature is incorrect though. If I refresh it, it goes to 7.6C, if I refresh again, it goes to 7.3C. If I keep refreshing, it keeps switching between those temperatures,  which are both wrong.

I noticed it. However, after a few attempts, it gets the right temperature. Hence my question to @buffy: what period can I download another packet of data? There is a limit here.

Installed paid version on my 4+ year old OnePlus One (Android 6.0.1/CyanogenOS) and it works fine.  Nicely done.

I probably don't need the temp out to two decimals, though. :)

I work on the Samsung Galaxy J7 with Android 8.1.0. I have a question for you. What is the difference between a commercial version and a free version?

Paid version is only without ads. In future I'd like add more stations in settings. I'm working on it.

Answer: yes, that's right. At the bottom of app there is information about last data update. there are time after refresh (Last reload), actual data time (Sensors updated) and chart data time (PWS data).

I tested app on my PWS and actual data I have every 2-5 min. Chart data every 5-10 min. times may not be the same. All values are from WU servers.

Sometime you can get this issue. If you are too fast WU servers send empty feed and I load last downloaded data from app. If you refresh again, you should get fresh data from WU servers. It's not perfect, but I can try make it better. Thanks for feedback.

I have fresh data in 2-5 minutes. If I try reload app faster, I'll get same data, empty feed or sometime I download few hours old chart data. I'm still not sure how WU servers are working. Limit in app is 10s I think, I will check it. But you can't download more actual information like every 2 minutes, I think.

btw: I also found problem with chart data. sometime is dataset in metric units, sometime in imperial... Actual data info I have more fresh. Actual data means: Temp, dew, pressure, humidity, solar.

I will add all possible values to "actual data" feed downloading for more fresh information in app.

Paid version is only without ads. In future I'd like add more stations in settings. I'm working on it.

Thanks to all for feedbacks, ideas and information from your testing, I really appreciate it.  [tup]

Can you test this station: IGMINAMI4 and what conclusions do you take from the tests?

Everything looks ok. I see actual values and also charts with correct data. Should I see something else?

You have also active solar sensor and it's sunrise.

It's a nice app but I want the data to be no more then a minute old. Counting on WU at this time while they are going through their changes hurts that.
It has promise but it needs a more options. I also understand it's new and in the development stage so I'll check back later and see how it's progressing.

What you mean "more options"?

I tried reload data faster, but I got same values. Maybe if you use API key, you can download PWS values more faster. But I have same dataset in 2 minutes.

A realtime data option would be nice like Rapid Fire.
Option to add temperature in the notification bar based on GPS
Have the external map option open up at your gps coordinates.
Inside temperature and humidity if applicable.
Automatic updates without having to use the refresh button.
A no-ads version.
Ability to choose which parameters to graph.

Thanks a lot for more ideas.

- auto refresh will be available as option in settings
- no ads version for android is in store
- external map is good idea (also I'd like wind map)
- inside values I can't read
- notification - I will check options
- I will also check rapid fire

thanks

Sorry buffy but going to have to delete your app. Signed off on WU today.
They are just too unreliable and it seems they really don't want to fix their problems.
If you could find another data provider for the USA I would certainly keep using the app.
Good luck with your endeavors.

How to explain that on the WU portal data is displayed at different intervals - see the link:https://www.wunderground.com/dashboard/pws/IGMINAMI4
and your app is reading regularly - how did you write?

yes, there can be delay between online values on website and values in app. But I download only public data from WU. I can not influence it. What I get is what I show in app.

I tried your PWS in app and on link above and I see little bit different values. I'm not sure why. I think there is delay. On your link, you see more fresh values.

This is the problem that one IPOMORSK23 station is presented by WU and by your app regularly and the other IGMINAMI4 at WU and at you with different intervals. Both stations send data every 16s to WU - that is, identically.

I understand that you are downloading data from WU after processing by WU, or what it presents on the graphs? Or maybe you download in a different way - what? Can you give it? I am looking for the reason for the loss of data before the presentation on graphs in WU and you.

My chart data are in every 5 minutes interval. I see your PWS id IGMINAMI4 and I see your data in very different interval, maybe that's why you see another values. See picture with last data from this PWS. Mainly time of inserted data to WU.

Is called "rapid fire" and you can send data as fast as every 5 seconds :) I do.

The station sends data packets every 16s and this interval is stitched in its software. This is not modifiable by the user.
WU aggregates packets for 5 minutes, averages data and displays in graphs and tables.

The window / Time slot on the WU / IBM server is opened cyclically every 5s and the packages fall into this window when it is open. If they do not get due to the time shift they are lost - but this is a very small percentage of losses  ;)

The fastest stations send packets every 5s.

This is the probable reason for the mismatch of some stations to these windows / time slots and the irregular presentation of data. ;)

I paid for this right away. As-Is 6 bucks is a steal. Just presenting me the data, not a lot of garbage like WU App. I deleted the WU App. I like that there is no map. Let me choose if I want to download that data, perfect. The compass rose page is outstanding!!

Put in Rapid Fire and a tiny compass rose on the main page it would be a total package. I would pay even more. Seriously.

Maybe squeeze in a little compass or just a direction arrow on the top banner???

Ability to add additional station would be great.

Keep up the good work.

Thanks a lot for supporting us. Today I sent to store new version of Paid app for Android. There is option for autorefresh after start. Also in this version there will be available more stations for adding. But on this feature I'm still working.

Thanks also for ideas for improvements. I'd like see wind on main page too, but there is no so much space. But I'm also working on new app theme with swipe and more features.

That's what I was thinking. Even just an indicator arrow. Maybe in the little space left of the temp/under the station ID.

Or what about instead of text like "South" a little rose instead?

Update 4.0.3 and 4.0.9 Android

New feature

- Wind icon with direction rose compass
- windy widget map in Wind section (only paid version)

I also tried fix unexpected imperial unit problem in temperature chart. but I'm not sure if it's working right. I neve got wrong dataset... But sometimes it happens.

Help
Please if you will see in temperature chart units with '!', please contact me (F! or C!) with screenshot if you can. I'd like know if temperature/dew chart data shows right in imperial units. Also I have still one bad feedback with autorefresh. But you wrote me, it's OK...

Hello
It seems to run OK
Meanwhile let me point other option.
Once you got in the middle an area with wind info named "WIND FROM" maybe you can use the "wind rose" in this area too and free the upper area ( where it is now).
In that way we got a visual and a descritive indication of the wind in one onle position.
That area could be also the sensitive area to call the wind page.
On the wind page I would like to see a way to get back to main page diferent from the "PWS METEO" on first row because when we have auto update selected it will reload every time we come back from wind page to main page. Hope you agree and that could be done.
Regards
JMCN

thanks guys!

I can make clickable "wind from" section, but I tried put compass inside the box, but there is no space. Only without word direction. I will think about it. Anyway, compass icon in the top menu will stay there, wind section is my favorite :)

Autorefresh will be repaired, but don't know how just now. I know about problem with autorefresh if you go back to main page via app logo - page is refreshed again.

thanks for new ideas for improvements!

I never tried it. But I can read something about it. we talk about android, right?

That is right :)
Right now is use Wunderground app because it allows me to see my temperature on my taskbar wile on my phone and also allows me to see it while the phone is locked with a lockscreen forecast.
Let me try again for pictures.

but it must run on background... that's not good practice.

I will try learn something about this feature

If it can be selected on or off it would be a great feature.

The choice for Wind Rose on top bar is exactly right. On top, first thing I see.

All the data is right below. This is how info apps should be made. No extra bull. The app is tiny on your phone but does a workhorse job of delivery.

I was looking for some solution for lockscreen. And I have not good news about this. Lock screen is little bit impossible just now. Also widget :( android and Ios have another solutions of these and it's difficult for me cover both platforms. Sorry guys.

Status bar looks better. I know how can I change background color of status bar :)

but all features above need background running.

After app will be finished, I will try add these features. Now I have still so many things for repair, because of unstable WU. I have still issues with metric/imperial mesh units..

I am running on Galaxy S10 and I have a problem with min/max on temps and dew.

For today I show min/max temps of 158.5 and 159.6
dew 125.2 and 127.2

Hopefully a fix is in the works.  Once that is fixed, I will go for the paid version.

Thank you

Yes, this is a problem with unexpected data unit values... Sorry for that. Please try send me PM of your PWS WU ID for testing. If there is problem in app with downloading unexpected units, you see "F!" in units place in temp chart. Is it there?

I'm trying make new data download function for elimination this error.

FAST FIX

without app updating from store:

1. remove your PWS in settings
2. add your PWS again
3. data should be actual

Sorry for this issue. We will update app in stores ASAP.

WU switched off one of feeds with values...

Anyway, please, try update to version 4.2.2 and let me know if this help you. I tried fix problems, but I haven't for example testing feed in imperial units.

yes, maybe. but more traffics are from weather stations to their servers. few api calls and sending data out can't ruin them. anyway they use OUR meteo data for their business.

Does anyone know api calls limit? I didn't find this information.

It looks that public PWS data api is gone. Source is empty. I'm sending to WU meteo data and their ecosystem is really unstable. I had meteo info on my website (it's gone). I made app for showing MY DATA (it's gone too). Why I spent so much money for PWS if only what can I do is giving my meteo data to WU (IBM)?

really bad... I'm working on new version of data loader. In the meantime, I will get a lot of negative points from angry users... everytime it's fault of developers, not service.
Title: Re: PWS monitor for Android/iOS
Post by: buffy on February 01, 2020, 05:08:11 AM
Old public api sources are finally gone! They will not start it again, maybe for while. We should use APIKEY and another api sources. values are not same...

I made new version of Android app with new data loader. But you need to add your APIKEY. I'm not sure about api calls limits, that's why I'm affraid add to app my apikeys for better using.

We will see what happens

Version 4.3.0
- add APIKEY in settings
- 1/7 days chart data
- UV sensor is back if available
- better loader (faster)

In app there still could be some bugs. If you find any, please report to me, I will try make fast fix. I had no chance to check every situation and device. Thanks

WU only provides integer temperature values via the API unless you set the 'numericPrecision' parameter to "decimal".  Maybe 'buffy' hasn't done that?

Here's the API docs if you're interested...

Except that they spent what appears to be quite a bit of resources developing and releasing a "new and improved" version of their old, much more usable app which is anything but.  Instead they should take copious user interface and display notes from this one.

Love the app.  I just switched back to an Android phone and like your app a lot.  Quick question - any chance you could add a notification alert with the current Temperature?  Or have that as an option?  That is seriously the ONLY thing missing in my mind (or maybe create a widget if that's easier?)

Probably not as simple as I think it would be, but thanks again for creating the app!

Good day, I just installed PRO and successfully added my station. My settings are metric. I have a question to the wind-rose spider chart: Can it be that despite metric setting, the numbers on the concentric circles show feet?
Thanks for looking into it. Ernie

Is the wind speed and gust live?
How often is the update?
Rapidfire supported?

Just started receiving updates on my iPad yesterday.  For about a week prior, nothing.  That said, the updates are about an hour behind.  Previous to the outage, they were about every 2 minutes.  Anyone know what is going on with this app?  It was my favorite goto for years.  Not so much lately.

No, it's not live. there is some update interval on WU. I think it is about 5 minutes

I honestly don't know what's going on. For us everything works fine on ios and android devices. We use the app daily. It's true that sometimes there are problems with WU (temporary data unavailability), but otherwise the app works reliably. If you feel something is wrong, send us your station id, we will monitor it for a few days to see if there is any problem.

Thanks for the reply Buffy. Lately, the Weather data posted in the PWS Monitor app is correct and seems up-to-date.  Since I stopped using the app daily, I am not sure when the change actually happened.  However, what is still strange is the "Last Updated on..." date and time are slightly over an hour behind the weather data actually posted in the app.  Refer to the attachment, where the PWS Monitor and the PWS Weather screen shots were taken close to the same time this morning.  Of course, its possible I don't understand the real meaning of the "Last Updated on..." date and time.  Up until now, I thought is was when the date/time when the last data was received from the weather station?  Hope this better explains where I am at now.  If needed, my station ID is KTXNORTH9.

The WU data is whole another "thing" altogether.  When I go to my WU "Member Settings", "Manage Devices" page (https://www.wunderground.com/member/devices) it says "Online" with a green status.  It has been in that status at least since June 6th now.  When I go to my web display page (https://www.wunderground.com/dashboard/pws/KTXNORTH9#history), under the Station Summary it says "Offline" with a red status and nothing shows for the Current Conditions. HOWEVER, under Weather History for KTXNORTH9 further down the page it does show summary data for my PWS.  Why the "Offline" status and no current conditions? Further, my PWS does not show as a PWS in the mobile app nor on any WunderMap. After sending numerous support requests, I have heard nothing from WU support, which I understand is SOP.  Obviously the data is getting there, since PWS Monitor and WU History show it.  Let me know if you have some thoughts on how to get my WU data back online with WunderMap.

Thanks
Gary

.. date and time ..

What is the time stamp on the device sending upload to WU?

>What is the time stamp on the device sending upload to WU?<

I don't understand the question.  I use Virtual Weather Station on my home automation PC and it is set to upload every two minutes to both PWS Weather and WU.  I have never seen a VWS log that provides a time stamp indicating when it had completed an upload.

Thanks
Gary

The time stamp of the upload device should match  the timestamp of receiving site. Just a long shot troubleshooting.

>The time stamp of the upload device should match  the timestamp of receiving site.<

Do we know for sure that the receiving site always displays the latest data received from the upload device?  That is, is it possible under some conditions they skip one or more uploads?  In which case, the last upload timestamp from the upload device would not match the receiving site time/date of the data being displayed.  In any case, I don't know how to get the VWS upload timestamp(s).  It seems that all goes on in the background.

Thanks
Gary

The current conditions page of WU will show like 10 minutes late if my MB is off with its time stamp. If you ate many hours behind like the graph seems to show maybe it displays as Off-Line.

>If you ate many hours behind like the graph seems to show maybe it displays as Off-Line.<

As mentioned (reply #149), my WU Manage Devices shows online, and my Current conditions shows offline with no sensor readings showing.  On the other hand, in the History Summary, directly below the Current conditions, the sensor readings are current (usually, no more than 10 min off, where my VWS setting for Rapid Fire is 5 min).  Further, the readings that PWS Monitor shows are likewise, current.  With PWSM its simply the "Last Updated on" date/time that is off by about an hour.  Perhaps Buffy help out with that issue?

To add further to the WU confusion, you are right about the graph, below the Summary sensor readings.  I hadn't noticed that before.  It also shows about an hour off.  But as with the Summary sensor readings, the graph(s) readings when you hover over them are current.  It looks like the times are relative to an earlier time zone, or something like that.  In the WU settings, my "Home Location" is set and that appears to be the only thing that would externally identify the WU time zone. Now my VMS Station Settings do have a time zone setting that is set to GMT -6, Central Time (zero time zone offset).  I would think the uploaded data contains the date/time that WU (and PWSM) uses.  I just wish WU would let me know why they won't show my data on WunderMap and in their mobile app.

Thanks
Gary

Is this still being updated/supported? It appears the iOS version hasn't seen a revision in 2 years. I downloaded it and it seems to be working fine with iOS 16.1.2. I might purchase an ad free version if it's going to be updated as needed. Thanks!
