WS-2902A and WiFi Setup - blinking M-A instead of M-B
« on: February 21, 2019, 04:33:35 PM »
Many thanks to this forum for the various posts, ideas, hints and tips. The positivity of the group kept me going, rather than give up and I thought I'd just make a quick, FIRST, post.

Somehow, I'd come across setup documentation (for the 2902) that advised to simultaneously press the Rain and Alarm button for 5 seconds. This resulted in the WiFi icon to rapidly flash along with M-A..No attempts using any device, tablet or phone, for the AWNET app to configure the console.

I kept focus on why the documentation stressed it should be M-B flashing. I finally found the correct documentation showing to press WIND + Pressure instead...bingo. now M-B is flashing with the WiFi symbol.

I'm not sure I understand all the nuances, but I did also get the firmware update to 4.1.1
It's gorgeous here today, considering the previous couple weeks of snow. 44deg and Sunny

Thanks all

M-A is the old way to set it up with the Osprey Tool app. This was used with older 3.x.x firmware and was what ran on the original WS-2902. This method basically requires you to have your mobile device connected to a 2.4GHz WiFi only. So it required people to turn off the 5GHz band or make the 5GHz band have some other name.

M-B is the newer easier method and is for the new 4.x.x firmware and is what is on the WS-2902A. This method uses the awnet app instead. This method has the console create a MiFi hotspot. This method does not have the issue with needing to deal with 5GHz. A WS-2902A though retains the ability to connect the old way as you did by pressing the other set of buttons.

* It is technically possible to upgrade a WS-2902 to a WS-2902A UPDATE: Ambient decided to advise against it because some devices were getting bricked (bad flash upgrades that render the device useless), so in the latest awnet app the ability to upgrade from 3.x.x to 4.x.x has been disabled.

Once the WS-2902 or WS-2902A is linked up to WiFi with either method it doesn't matter from that point on as they work the same. And the WS-2902 users can even turn their 5GHz back on if they turned it off during setup.

Enjoy your new stuff! Oh and welcome to the forum.

Hi George,
Thanks for concisely mentioning these distinctions here in this thread!
Kind regards,

Posting in here instead of a new thread since this thread led to me to the right path:

Had a 2902 Display running firmware 4.0.2 as of February 2022. Was running the android AmbientToolm application as seen in the screenie below:

Had updated my TPLink firmware on the AC1700 router to the latest and sure enough the connection dropped. Trying to reconnect after a reset on the 2902 display did not work not matter what was tried.
Read this post about using the AWnet software found for android at https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.dtston.ambienttoolplus

Which I had not idea existed; despite the warning here about flashing firmware and possibly bricking the display I went for it and got lucky with everything working. Display was updated to latest firmware running 4.3.2 (as of March 2022) and everything is working fine. Felt like I needed to register and post my update for anyone else running into the same issues and finding this original post from 2019.

Thanks for leading me to the right path and hopefully this will help others:

If you read our central post https://www.wxforum.net/index.php?topic=40730.0 (section firmware), you will(would have) realize(d) that the firmware update you made was an update of the WiFi firmware (only). The WiFi firmware is responsible for the console posting data to weather networks like WU, in your case Ambient, etc. and the custom server functionality.
The device firmware for reading and processing (and displaying) sensor values is not touched by that update.

My issue was that wifi connectivity dropped and not the connection between display and osprey weather unit.

no doubt - but
- anyhow you wouldn't have been able to change the device firmware of your WS-2902A.
- the general communication between your router and your console would most likely not have been affected by the WiFi firmware update (in spite of the name suggesting this)

Not sure what you mean about the issue not being firmware related since the firmware updated had fixed it. Didn't research more in depth or capture packages between console and router but believe it had to do with the wifi broadcast's. Didn't read the release notes for the routers firmware update and its bugfixes.

Gruss nach 0681!
