Need help picking gear for remote site
« on: February 25, 2007, 05:11:05 PM »
Hey folks,

I have a friend in the Bahamas, who would like to setup a weather station with lightning detector. He has a mostly-on cable modem (common power failures on his island).

So, I was wondering:
 a) should he use the LD250, and go with something like the NSLU2 to run the station software/upload, or
b) go with the PCI board and find a cheap computer that he could stick it in to run everything.

Of course that brings to mind, can the NSLU2 even run Nexstorm (via WINE or whatnot)?

Thanks.

I've heard (on other forums) that the LD250 doesn't have the same features available as on the PCI card, so for max features, the PCI card is a better bet.  On the PC you could run NexStorm, WASP2, and the weather software for an all-in-one station.

My 2cents :-)

Ok, going with that (PC), any ideas on what my lowest cost complete solution would run us? I'm also seeking recommendations on which PC to use and the like (there's a nice can-o-worms :) ).

Davis VP2 6153
Boltek PCI
Nexstorm
Some PC weather station software (I use wview on the Mac, no clue on the PC)
a PC (again, no clue, I'm a Mac user :) )

Anything I'm missing? This needs to pretty much be a turnkey setup & install, being a weather nut is not my friend's full time occupation. He does emergency flights out of the Eleuthera/Current island area.

Going by Ambient's prices and using the wunderground packages, it would run us around $1400 before the PC, which puts us over our $1k budget.... oops.

Thanks for the help.

I was going to tell him the same thing!  I would look anywhere but where he's looking now!
