I think it's a mockingbird to he has now started sitting on the wind vane since i adjusted the spikes.

Mockingbirds are very cool birds, really intelligent. They can recognize individual humans. Sounds like you have found a solution that works for both of you. :)

Still getting lots of crap in my rain collector!

There are trees in the yard taller than my weather station but they still like to sit on it.

I was thinking about trying to put a arm on the pole maybe 2ft long then a vertical piece of pvc and making it taller than the weather station giving them a good place to sit.

Another solution might be the updated rain cone that Davis has just released.  It comes with spikes and places to put them on the cone built-in.

I solved this problem with some scrap galvanized 1/4" hardware cloth I had in my shop.  I made a 1" wide strip long enough to fit around the top of the rain collector.  Used wire cutters to snip off the top wire to create 1/4" tall wire spikes.  Fastened to collector with some small stainless steel screws.  Haven't had a bird land on the rain bucket in over 7 years.
