New font in WU temp/wind icons?
« on: November 15, 2012, 11:16:26 AM »
Is it just me or is there a new font used for the temp in the temp/wind icons?  ... and the font looks too thin.  ... and it is off center.

I don't like the new look.

Dave,

Yes, new fonts. The temp/wind font is slightly above centre but is otherwise okay. But the temperature only font is awful and needs changing.

Now you've given a picture, I see what you mean. On the WU Full Screen Map you do, but not on the individual history page small map.

Though I do like how the have "sliced" off the edges so it looks more like an arrow and not a jagged shape.

The font is not "awful" I've noticed NO change in the font. It looks perfectly ok to me.

It was an opinion. You cannot be wrong with an opinion. Yours clearly differs. If you haven't seen any change you're looking at a different thing to me. So you can be clear what I am looking at here's a link. http://www.wunderground.com/auto/wxmap/global/stations/03334.html

Ray, I don't often look at the temp only font.  To me, it looks a little changed -- maybe harder to read now ---, but I couldn't swear to that.  The link you posted showed the dewpoint/humidity icons and the fonts in those seem untampered from what they have always been.

Hi Dave,

The font for 'temp only' has definitely changed since that is my default so I remember the old one. Regarding what you're seeing it must pick up your settings since I see 'temp only'.

I've raised a flag with WU about its visibility. Hopefully they'll do something about it. Ideally, a choice of fonts.

My biggest complaint is that if you switch to C from F the temp is still shown in whole numbers only. So it's almost half as accurate. I did raise a flag on that over a year ago but it still hasn't been addressed.

Looks like the value is in a table cell
and so its the table cell font that drives it
from looking at the html source
and so might also depend on what browser you are using?

Good thought, Brian.  Thanks.  The fonts are thin, but centered in IE8; however, I'll never use IE other than to log in on one particular WiFi where it is mandated.

Good spot Brian. I use Mozilla Firefox and that's where the problem is. Switching to IE8 shows them as they used to be. Strange why this should happen. Is it Firefox's problem or WU's?

Then it would help if you also raised a ticket William. The more the merrier. I'll advise them it happens with Firefox but not with IE8.

I raised a ticket for this font problem with Chrome and Firefox and I've had a reply from WU saying they will look to adjust the fonts. Hopefully a result.

Er, no it isn't. The fonts are correctly shown in IE8 but not in Firefox or Chrome. Did you not read the messages above?

I read that. How many web pages have you designed?

I'm not happy with your tone. How is that relevant to this problem? If the fonts are displayed corectly in IE8 and not in Chrome or Firefox why would that be the fault of IE8?

I've raised a ticket with WU to get the problem resolved. What have you done?

My point is that if you design something to look good in IE anything, it most likely won't look correct in FF or Chrome or Safari. Ask any web developer which browsers render pages more like they intended and then ask any web developer what the most difficult browser to code for is.

Here's the latest browser stats. IE is very slowly fading away.

2012   Internet Explorer   Firefox   Chrome   Safari         Opera
October   16.1 %   31.8 %   44.9 %   4.3 %    2.0 %

And I don't really care what the font looks like on their page.

I have made changes to my webpages and they seem to look okay in Firefox, Chrome and IE8. I can't check IE9 compatibility as I don't have W7.

I don't doubt your stats that people are moving away from IE but if you use http://validator.w3.org/ to validate your site's content it should look okay with all browsers.

But if you're not interested in what the font looks like is there any point in you commenting on this problem?

OK, now WU is listing the temp instead of the DP in the DP/hum icon.  Have no idea when this started.

1.  Not true. A page can validate and look DIFFERENT in various browsers. It all starts with the initial default that is built in to each browser. My site looks different in IE because of the way it renders shadows.
2. Because my point was pertinent to the problem.

I just noticed wundermap is now showing Fahrenheit in the bubbles... all my settings are for metric. Always have been.  Tabular and other pages are showing correctly Celsius....

Okay, I'll bow to your greater knowledge on this. But WU are looking at it so hopefully we'll have a solution soon.
