Here's an interesting METAR related by LTC Nicole Mitchell, ANG, and formerly a Hurricane Hunter Aerial Weather Reconnaissance Officer.

"I'm BEYOND jealous.
 
One thing weather observers report is runway conditions that could impact a landing...most often "wet runway" or a visibility issue.
One of my Guard team is in Antarctica right now, & a colleague of his got to report a penguin on the runway in an official obs a couple days ago.
