Title: Keto diet
Post by: ValentineWeather on April 04, 2019, 01:51:28 PM
Something I'm going to try. I'm not full blown diabetic but pre- with A1C of 6.0 on last check. No meds so want to try this.

This diet can kill 2 birds with 1 stone, by removing carbs and sugars body starts burning fat and ketones if you can restrict carb intake to under 20g per day. Lowers blood glucose, carbs turn to sugar for those at type 2 diabetes risk.  It's not true type 2 diabetes can't be reversed. Thousands have had success and off meds.

Overview: Cutting carbs from your diet means less glucose for your body to burn up. Replacing carbs with fats will cause acids called ketones to build up in your body. The goal is to force the body to derive its fuel from fat, rather than carbs. While your body is in ketosis, it becomes extremely efficient at burning fat.

The America diet recommendations has had it wrong for years, the result is the epidemic of obesity and type 2 diabetes.

I'll update on occasion.
First full day of diet where I believe carb count stayed under 20 grams.  Weight loss -4 lbs. Don't think its water because I drink plenty water with lemon, tea, coffee black throughout. FYI most days exercise 20-40 minutes daily, jog or fast walk.

Food yesterday- I do take 500 mg berberine (Pro Caps) as supplement with food and European milk thistle proprietary blend from (Life Extensions)

breakfast- Bulletproof coffee made with 1 tbsp MCT oil skipped the butter.
11 am Lunch-1 hard boiled egg, 1 large avocado.
7:30 pm Dinner- I was hungry, 6 portions tilapia steaks smothered in butter, garlic, pepper and 8 brussel sprouts. Glucose after 45 minutes was only 123 with near 9 carbs in brussel sprouts.

Good luck! I was in the same situation as you a few years ago. Changed my diet and tried to eat as much unprocessed "natural" foods as I could and watched the carbs. Lost 60 lbs. and blood sugar is good.

I've never been a dieter at all but was much more active prior to retirement. What amazes me are how bad carbs can be and they are such a staple of the American diet.
This diet you don't count cals and consume mostly fats and proteins restricting carbs to less than 20 until you reach the body weight desired.
I look and feel pretty good around 230lbs is my current goal so 22 more pounds.  Once reached you can increase carb intake somewhat as long as you can maintain that weight and not go up again.
In my case it will depend also on glucose levels what I do with carbs. The lower body weight loss could take care of some of that with insulin production keeping up.

I went into my doctor's office a few weeks ago with another epiphany.  The food pyramid that the government shoves down everyone's throats was not created by medical people, but rather lobbyists.  The fruit and grain lobbies will not be happy with your diet.....

Update on the diet: Still sticking with it. I seemed to hit a wall at 12 lbs. loss. I did pick up one of those ketoses breath meters and seems to work. Tested against nondieter...They blew 0.0. I've ranged from .7 to 2.9 today. 3.0 is considered starving so ate some noncarb food and MCT oil in coffee.  Maybe I'll drop a few pounds today I've never ran this high before.

Blood sugars are running low of course being I avoid most all sugars and staying under 20 carbs. A1C if I tested would be normal I'm sure.
I'm not sure how long I can stay on this diet because so much of what I love to eat is high on carbs.  (Mexican Food, pasta's especially)
Good thing I educated myself enough to be more conscious of foods high in carbs and eat with moderation even if I stop the KETOSES less than 20 carbs daily or about 20 potato chips, by keeping on low carb diet long term under 250 grams you can stop gaining weight and control blood sugar much easier.

I've continued to research this type of diet the biggest negative of diet is with the high-fat consumption is the risk of running higher LDL levels but there are arguments going both ways on this.

After 90 days on Keto diet, my body has adapted to burning ketones instead of sugar. No longer have that keto flu feeling. I can even take in a few more carbs 50 or so, and not get kicked out of ketoses.
Lost around 16 lbs without counting calories, morning blood sugar well below 100 mg/dL range when I've checked a couple of times a week mainly mid 70's to 90 at the highest level.
I no longer watch glucose because it never peaks above 135 even after large meals of (low carb) food so the pre-diabetes conditions have completely disappeared without carbs in the diet, example glucose after meals, 1 hour back or below 100, many times mid 70's same as morning checks.

Feel much better without sugar/carbs but it's taken awhile to adapt. Still not losing tons of weight but most likely due to high-calorie intake.

The one thing I should caution about getting too much fat in the diet is raising triglycerides and cholesterol levels.
I take berberine 500mg x2 , along with milk thistle to help ingestion into the liver which helps lower these as a natural supplement along with multivitamins and fish oil instead of statin drugs.

I was put on the apple diet.  The doctor said to eat an apple and I would lose weight.  I asked before or after meals.  He said INSTEAD OF YOUR MEAL.

Before I went into the hospital with severe iron deficiency anemia I was not hungry and survived on very little and water.   I lost 20 pounds. Now on the mend, my appetite has improved and I must have put on some weight.  I am going to need to eliminate carbs,  concentrate on iron rich foods along with the nifty red pill, and more salads.   I have strayed a bit....

My grandfather always ate his apple every evening and said: "An apple a day keeps the doctor away". Didn't work his whole life however but did manage to make 104 before heart failure.
As I told my daughter years ago,  an apple is a good form of birth control.  She asked how does that work, you get an apple and hold it between your knees.  works every time.
