That Meteoshield Pro seems really nice as it shows to make a huge difference. I never realized before as typical images just show the spiral from the side, but I can now see from the under part that it is actually a triple helix....I thought before that it was just a double helix. Very interesting design.

The thing that does impress me is the fact you put it literally anywhere and it gets accurate temps & beats the Stevenson screen in temperature accuracy. Amazing piece of work honestly.

I think the magic is in the spiral design. Hot air rises, therefore there is always a natural convection that occurs with the spiral design. The spiral design is what allows air to move. Every other radiation shield you see is just a sandwich of layered sections that trap the air. Other weather station manufacturers should take note.

Someone should paint the inside of their Davis 7714 or Ambient SRS100LX with black paint and test. Of course they would need a control, with another one that was not painted.

Not surprisingly Ecowitt are working on a new radiation screen design and I hope that they will be looking closely at the Meteoshield design.
Probably be a while as they are very busy with new projects but at least its on the board!

Did you send them the tip to make it spiral?

Ecowitt is just fascinating in how much they listen to their customers for product innovation and improvement.

That's very interesting and would massively improve the quality of their external temp readings. I guess the radiation shield will also cost a bunch less than the high quality ones from the competitors.

yes I also felt that there is something planned that will concern the shielding of the sensors, we hope because it is something that is missing from the ecowitt and extremely important [tup]

Ecowitt suppling good radiation shields for their temperature sensors would help them surpass Davis & become one of the top dogs in the industry personally. They are one of the only companies in this field that listen to customer feedback & they are on the way to the top.

I'd personally think that the WS80 would perform worse out of them all since it's mainly a wind sensor & I'd have temperature accuracy lowest of my priorities. Impressive none the less. Thank you for the tests!

Agreed on the WS80.
When I first received the pre-production model of the WS80 I really recognised that Ecowitt/Fine Offset are deadly serious at this game because it was such a step up from the standard sensor suite in terms of build and design.
In my mind there is no doubt that they aspire to surpass Davis in terms of quality and capability if you want it, whilst offering a relatively good base level to get started.

the WS80 is an excellent station, there is a project to improve it in temperature measurement, which consists in coloring the plates of the shield in the lower part of opaque black, from the first data, there is a good improvement, let's see if ecowitt undertakes this way

good morning, data of 08/15/2020, a day with good solar radiation, the moderate wind from the north helped the screens not to suffer too much, but in any case the difference between the meteoshield pro and the other screens is clear. note the difference in temperature between the meteoshield on the roof and the one positioned at 2.05 meters above the ground, even 2 degrees centigrade, the davis 7714 that I disassembled is missing, I am inserting a wh31 EP probe inside, which I will position next to the meteoshield pro in the position on the ground, ;)

Hi Ivano

I have tried to look on all these great charts you are making - and thank you for that!  =D>
But I have a little hard time reading them, maybe because I'm a beginner in all this weather thingy here

Can you, maybe just with a few words, tell what they say?
What are the most accurate?
What setup do you prefer?

Just translate it to words, for someone like me.

Thank you

On the most basic level to understand the temperature graphs what you see is the temperature curves of each sensor type inside of a given radiation shield. You can read the legend to match color with each sensor/radiation shield pairings. What you'll notice is that the Barani Meteoshield outperforms the other radiation shields by producing a slightly lower temperature curve graph line. The indication is that the other sensor/radiation shields run hot and do not provide sufficient protection from thermal radiation warming caused by the parts of the shield and the sensor case retaining thermal mass energy.

exactly as galfert explained, which is the best system? they are the same, however as regards temperature, humidity and rain, the position on the ground is more suitable, as regards the wind, the position on the roof is better, the graphs are easy to understand, just read the legend that is in each graph and it's done,

hi, I'm back after some time, I changed my stations, renovating and adding new screens, I added two metspec screens a RAD-02 and a RAD-14 in station 2 and they are in comparison with the meteoshield pro, inside as sensors, they are all WH31 / 32 EP by ecowitt, in the first station I added a ventilated davis h24 now they are like this:
station 1  [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
station 2  [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
these are the first data relating to 06/11/2020 station 1

as you can see in the graphs of station 1, there is a problem with the ventilated davis h24, the fan turns slowly, I think it is the solar panel that is very damaged, I plan to solve it in the next few days, for those wishing to follow these comparisons in real time, click on these links https://www.ecowitt.net/home/index?id=9393 (https://www.ecowitt.net/home/index?id=9393)  https://www.ecowitt.net/home/index?id=21281 (https://www.ecowitt.net/home/index?id=21281)  [tup]

in conditions of no or weak ventilation, definitely yes, with moderate or strong wind the ventilated goes like the meteoshield pro, a few tenths up, it is obvious that a ventilated is always more performing see the davis vp2 pro, but pay attention to the rad-14 of the metspec really does mark a breakthrough in passive displays

The Campbell Scientific RAD14 looks impressive as does the Barani Meteoshield Pro as far as passive radiation shields are concerned but for the price of the Davis 6838 FARS as all being relatively close in price I think the win goes to the Davis. I'm speculating. Just saying that if you are going to spend around the same amount of money then I don't see how the passive solutions can justify that cost.

in my opinion with the tests carried out so far, if I had to buy a screen, I would buy the metspec rad-14, it costs less than the meteoshield pro, and much less than the ventilated davis, but to be sure I have to wait this summer, to have the definitive confirmation of the his goodness

Well when I check pricing for the US I get the following.

$214 - RAD14 and I imagine that there is some additional shipping which I couldn't get easily?
$221.23 - Davis 6838 from Scaled Instruments + $24 shipping.
€200 = $240 - Barani Meteoshield Pro + €100 for world wide shipping!

Potentially the RAD14 could be cheaper if shipping is reasonable. But it will likely best case end up the same cost as the Davis (only $7 price difference, you can't call that cheaper...that is the same when you are talking lower $200 range).  And I'm not sure if there is a better dealer in the US for the Barani, because €100 for shipping is retarded. If you take shipping out of the equation the Davis wins as they are all in the lower $200 range.

well yes, buying in america, yes if i had to buy the Davis ventilated in Italy, i would pay 498 dollars, if i take it on scaled between shipping and customs i would pay 375 dollars, and it would arrive after 30/35 days in this covid period, while the meteoschield pro is finished 310 dollars, while the rad-14 together with the rad-02 I paid 290 dollars including shipping, with the convention of meteonetwork, but the rad-14 normally costs about 200 dollars, the prices davis in Italy are madness, they cost a lot, and I still don't understand why, ](*,)

today quite cold day, indeed the coldest so far this winter, ventilation sustained by N / NW with gusts up to 70 km / h, look at the behavior of the ventilated davis vp2 pro and the ventilated davis screen with WH31 EP sensor, in these conditions they have a good detachment from passive screens, so it is not certain that ventilated is always the best solution  ;)

Hi Ivano, I've been reading through this post. Thanks so much for your detailed documentation and analysis. I'm new to all this and have found your posts very informative.

I have a quick question - why would the ventilated radiation shields perform worse than passive ones in high wind? My intuition would have expected them to be the same.

hello, in ventilated screens the same amount of air always enters, i.e. that sucked in by the fan, while in passive screens the strong wind arrives directly on the sensor, and this gives an advantage that the ventilated one does not have, in the case instead the wind is absent, or very weak, the ventilated has an advantage as it has that flow of air that sucks the fan while the passives do not, and go into difficulty,

the rad-02 more or less follows the metpro- the lastem defends itself  =D>

Yes WN1900AE is written on the back of my console, I am a beta tester too.

The E at the end I believe is for Europe since it uses the 869MHz band.

Not sure about that - its usually the "A" which stands for 868 MHz - see https://www.wxforum.net/index.php?topic=40730.0, acronym scheme.
"E" is probably something else. Like "extra, extended, enhanced ..." as in WH2320E.

good morning ... let's try to resume some comparison tests between screens, in this period under examination there are the screens of the Metspec rad-02 and rad-14 but also the new station of the ecowitt ws-1900 which is not yet on sale but indeed in the testing phase .Start with Metspec- postion 2 [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]  [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]  [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]  ws-1900 station  [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]  [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]  [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]  these are the final graphs, there is a bit of wind that disturbs the comparison, but still it's okay, :-) excellent performance of the ws1900 which is even better than the gw1001, despite having the same sensor group, but it has a difference of shape of the case, which allows it to improve its performance even if slightly, as regards the two Metspecs, excellent performance :-P [tup]

Unfortunately the WN67 is a "diet" version of the WS69 (WH65) sensor array - I will check with Ecowitt if the T/H/rain gauge replacement set they offer is already of the new WN67 quality (assuming that that good performance comes from the material used).

Haven't read the entire topic. Do you have a theory as to why the ventilated Davis performs so differently?

hello, when the wind is above 10 km / h the ventilated starts to worsen its performance, the reason is simple, the ventilated always sucks the same amount of air both with no wind and strong wind, while for passive screens with strong wind, they work better, as more air arrives on the sensor, when the wind is absent, or weak, the speech changes the ventilated ones work well and are unsurpassed, while the passives suffer, so before installing a solar shield, it is necessary to understand the microclimate of the installation area, if it is well ventilated all year round, there is no need to install a ventilated one, but better a good passive screen,

Ivano,
can you rewrite the rain values ordered by position?
Maybe WN1900 and VP2 are close together?

hi Zoomx, there is no pre-established order, the reference is the manual TFA without lid, yes the VN-1900 marked the same amount of rain as the VP2pro ,this comparison was made in conditions of heavy rainfall, with a rain / rate up to 205 mm / h  ;)

let's resume this discussion with the advent of spring, many ask me how one screen or station is compared to another, which screen should I take etc etc .. the best way to dispel any doubts is to look at a graph where there is a direct comparison, obviously there are no certainties in this matter, sometimes the same equipment moved to another place can give different results, but in any case with a direct comparison between screens/stations, some differences stand out, I will use for compared to me a post recently finished, with the move from the roof to the ground, [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
this year there are no Ecowitt or similar stations, only the WS68, maybe later I will add some, but the place is very little now, I want to make it clear right away that I have no interest in the various brands present in position, I don't sell and I recommend buying nothing, it's just a passion that I've been practicing for years now and I share it. chiunque abbia voglia di postare , lo può fare tranquillamente, a presto per i primi confronti

Good morning everyone, report from yesterday 04/21/2022, a day with good radiation and with very weak wind at times absent, I would say almost ideal for making comparisons, there are no high temperatures, but we are above 20° in the central hours, from note the comparison between the 3rd generation meteoshield pro and the 2nd generation one,but also the excellent behavior of the RAD-14, the passive vp2 goes on its own, with an average deviation in the hours 08:00 to 18:00 of 1.1°, I think the time has come for a change, in fact from around 7pm yesterday, I brought it back to ventilated, [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]  let's see if things improve, definitely yes, good vision to all  [tup]

good afternoon everyone , report yesterday 04/22/2023 , day with good solar radiation and very weak wind , a good day to compare screens and stations :-)
today the miracle happened the Davis vp2 pro ventilated is the best in position , but this was to be expected , ideal conditions for a ventilated screen
Enjoy your vision everyone.  [tup]

Good morning everyone, yesterday's data 04/24/2023
quiet day, the wind a little more sustained everyone agreed with the increase of the wind a few tenths more the breezy davis takes it, but not much, it recovers in the late afternoon when the wind calms down, but on average it is there.... have a good vision everyone  [tup]

Good morning everyone, data from yesterday 04/28/2023, a day with poor ventilation and good solar radiation, the temperatures were also good, with an average in the hours with the sun, above 20°, almost ideal conditions for the ventilated Davis, which together with the RAD-14 are the winners of the day, (obviously we are talking about trifles, a 0.1/0.2 tenths) all in all the Davis 7714 defends itself well with the black colored interior, but so do the others  :-)

Good morning everyone, let's start again with the comparisons after a week of disturbed weather, report from 06-07/05/2023, finally two good days, with good radiation and weak wind,
[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
two tough days, especially yesterday's one, where in the morning the absent or very weak wind put some screens in crisis. these conditions are ideal for the ventilated vp2 pro, but also for the Barani FARS, it should be noted that whenever the wind drops or fails, the vp2 pro takes command of operations, "in the morning / late afternoon"

good afternoon everyone, let's continue with the comparisons, even if the climate is not exactly optimal, report dated 19-20/05/2023
days characterized by poor ventilation, the 19th with good radiation, while the 20th with lower radiation, ideal conditions for the davis vp2 pro vent, but also the rad 14 stands out in similar conditions  ;) good vision to all

ps/ and I'm surprised that no one has analyzed Toby's reports to see that there is something that raises questions  8-)

I saw something, but I was a little confused, as I see a 3rd generation pro with sht45 as a reference screen sensor, and another 3 pro with a sht35 inside that travels constantly below 0.2°/0, 3rd tenths, they would seem not to be aligned, and in any case I believe that making a comparison, you have to use the same sensor, however it could also be that you are doing something else instead of comparing, specific tests, or you try something, that by only seeing the graphs, It is not understandable

My Pro3 is equipped with a bi-sensor (SHT45 + SHT35) that allows to highlight the gain that the SHT45 brings.
The most important thing is not the SHT35 of the Pro3 but the FARS equipped with an SHT45 like the Pro3 strictly identical.

Good morning everyone, report dated 22-23/05/2023 location:
[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
two good days, with high solar radiation and weak wind at times absent, temperatures begin to rise with peaks around 26/27°, the various systems have reacted well, no one has gone into difficulty, roughly in the most critical moments they have reacted very well remaining in instrumental tolerance, some jolts in the morning when the sun rises in the absence of wind, due to the reactivity of the screens, if we really want to make a ranking :lol:1)RAD 14 2)meteoshield pro 3rd generation and gradually the others, but let's talk about nothing  ;)
