Rain Storm News Update, CoCoRaHS Ontario, Canada

Dear Ontario CoCoRaHS Volunteers,

Thank you once again for joining the program and for your continuous contribution, And to those just joining, Welcome!


Farm & Food Care, Weather INnovations and the team at CoCoRaHS weather reporting network would like to remind everyone of the impending rain storm forecast for Southern Ontario tomorrow - Wednesday Oct 28.

Environment Canada has issued a Special Weather Statement for Southern Ontario
"Moisture laden fall storm with rain and gusty winds on tap. A low pressure area over Louisiana containing moisture from the remnants of hurricane Patricia will bring a large shield of rain into Southwestern Ontario tonight and reach the Golden Horseshoe area by Wednesday morning. The rain will likely become heavy at times as the low pressure area deepens. Latest indications continue to suggest 25 to 40 mm of rain in most areas. Locally higher amounts of 40 to 50 mm are possible, especially near lakes Erie and Ontario. Wind gusts to 70 km/h are likely in most areas. Even stronger winds are quite possible near the eastern ends of Lake Erie and Lake Ontario, where wind gusts may approach the warning threshold of 90 km/h. These winds may be strong enough to cause some tree damage and local power outages, especially in areas where trees remain in partial to full leaf. The rain and strong winds will end by Friday as the fall storm moves away into Northern Quebec."
 
Bruce Kelly from Farm & Food Care reminds you of a few things to think about before a storm:
Clean leaves out eaves and downspouts, even with a few moments you can check corners and where downspouts connect, extension pipes can be added before a large storm such as this to direct water even farther away from your foundation.
Check sump pump operation
Put away or secure patio furniture, construction materials or other things outside that may be damaged by high winds and rain
Secure all doors, windows ventilation louvers on sheds, garages and barns
If you have a stand-by generator, this afternoon might be a good time for a test run, check fuel supply
Motorists should think about their need to commute on Wednesday and the condition of their tires and wiper blades. Hydroplaning and localized flooding can occur in storms of this nature.
Wednesday, and Thursday morning, will not be normal travel days across Ontario and everyone must take some time to think about the security of their homes, business and farms and the safety of those you may be responsible for.

This is a great opportunity for us as CoCoRaHS Weather Watchers to capture this storm event that is rolling through our backyards!

From the Environment Canada report listed above, they say it is possible to receive between 40 and 50 mm so let's All see what we can capture and report. This much rain could indicate areas in the province with potential flooding. All notes and observations points are welcome alongside your reports as well.

The importance of the data

The data you submit to CoCoRaHS is important and is used by many. The National Weather Service, other meteorologists, hydrologists, emergency managers, city utilities (water supply, water conservation, storm water), insurance adjusters, USDA, engineers, mosquito control, ranchers and farmers, outdoor & recreation interests, teachers, students, and neighbors in the community are just some examples of those who visit our Web site and use our data. Weather Events such as this one are important to these groups for each of their respected professions / activities. Please take a moment to report what was in your gauge to CoCoRaHS, we truly appreciate any and all submissions especially during an event such as this.
