new firmware version for GW1100: V2.3.1
« on: January 26, 2024, 06:30:46 AM »
Hi!

There's a new firmware version V2.3.1 available for the GW1100.
Use the current WSView Plus app or the web interface (WebUI) of the GW1100 ("Device Setting") to update.

Changelog for V2.3.1:
- Fixed bug where some devices could not upload ecowitt.
- Fix the problem that setting parameters may be lost after power off.
- Fix the memory leaks and some known crashes.

one observation - the upgrade messed up the calibration settings
especially the offset for relative pressure
it also introduced a weird calibration factor 0.97 for wind
rain totals seem to be unaffected

same happened to the GW2000 3.1.1 upgrade

Yep, I also see a change in my relative pressure configuration.
My wind stayed the same as before at 0.00

Happened on both my GW1100 and my GW2000 , with relative pressure getting a calibration of -0.22 inHg

You might want to check your barometer calibrations.
I take screenshots before updating my gateways.
Like others, I did get changes in the relative offset.
However I did NOT get a change in my Abs offset.
The attached shows the affect of the update carried out this morning.
The change to my main gateway, I've already corrected.
GW2 is my reserve gateway, and not normally charted, also not corrected in the attached. [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

Edit
I may have found the problem.
Both my gateways are now picking up my 32b used by my HP2550, guess this is trumping the attached sensor.

It should only trump when the internal sensor is cut or the software is told to ignore it.

I agree completely.
However, the wires are not cut, and the ability to add the 32b was not there before the update.
I have now disabled this sensor in both my gateways (as are all my unused sensors).

Actually this happened to me too. My GW1100 and GW2000 defaulted to my WH32B for indoor T/H/P.
I just disabled the sensor for these gateways.

Edit: I don't consider this to be a bug, but rather an improvement and something to be aware of.

Hi!

Quote
an improvement and something to be aware of.
Yes, we had been calling for this change for a long time.
But such a change belongs in the changelog. And the compatibility matrix also needs to be adjusted.
In terms of content, however, I am glad that Ecowitt has (once again!) responded to the wishes of users.
Thank you very much!
(also for finding it!)

Speaking of updated firmware -- has anyone figured out a URL to download the updated GW1100 firmware from?

With the GW1000, you can fetch the firmware files (two of them) using URLs of the form
   "http://download.ecowitt.net/down/filewave?n=GW1000_user${user}&v=user${user}_gw1000_${version}.bin"
where user = 1 or 2, and version is e.g. "177" for 1.7.7.  So to get the two files for version 1.7.7, you download these:

    http://download.ecowitt.net/down/filewave?n=GW1000_user1&v=user1_gw1000_177.bin as gw1000_user1_177.bin
    http://download.ecowitt.net/down/filewave?n=GW1000_user2&v=user2_gw1000_177.bin as gw1000_user2_177.bin

I manage my GW devices on a completely offline network, so the GW1100 cannot update itself, and I cannot use the Android app for the same reason.  I'd rater not have to move the GW1100 to another network just to update it occasionally, when it is otherwise perfectly happy, and the GW1000 devices are just fine.  I have written my own C code to manage the devices, and it can successfully install new firmware on the gw1000 - both upgrade and downgrade - without an outside connection. (I bring the gw1000 firmware files over mannually.)

I suggest you present your case to support@ecowitt.com and ask if they can provide you with the update/upgrade.
But don't expect a reply before 17-Feb-2024 because of the Chinese New Year Holidays.

It turns out that I don't need to ask them after all ...  I did a bit of digging, and figured out the "check for update" protocol that the GW1100 is using.  I now have a handy little Unix shell script that gets the information, and can then fetch the firmware file.

Thank you to @kheller2 for the tidbit in https://www.wxforum.net/index.php?topic=44254.25 - I used my Raspberry Pi WiFi interceptor to sniff the HTTP requests made at startup, then made some educated guesses about the "sign" portion until I got something working.

Yes please provide some details especially on the signature.  I made some guesses but didn't get it right, nor did I spend many brain cells on it.  The goal would have been to create a proxy between myself and ecowitt (using DNS views).  I stopped thinking about it since they were using https and I didn't want to deal with figuring out how the GW would handle talking to a broken SSL proxy if that was required.

Yes please provide some details especially on the signature.

It turns out the signature is pretty simple - it's just the md5 sum of the query string with "@ecowittnet" appended.  I figured this out by taking a look through the binary firmware image, then trying a few things until it worked.

I have attached my Unix shell script that handles most of this to get the update information.
It only relies on date, sed, tr, grep, curl, and md5, so it should be fairly portable.  It may require adapting if your system has e.g. md5sum instead of md5, but I think that's it. (Note that it does not do the actual firmware download, but that's simple given all this.)

Note that it is currently set to check for the GW1100B, but it's a simple pair of edits to select GW2000 or GW1200 variants.  You will also want to rename it to remove the ".txt" extension (I had to add that for the forum software to let me attach it.)

Any questions, suggestions, or other feedback are quite welcome.

Attached is a revised version that works on both FreeBSD Unix and Debian Linux (tested on buster). Now it knows to use md5sum when md5 is not present, and now it uses older curl options that should be common.

Comments, questions, and suggestions are welcome!

It does not work for GW1000x devices though, any idea what mechanism they use?

Yes great work.

I suspect there may be some throttling/rate limiting though, I have ported the code to python and was using the same defaults. No problems running the code quite a few times this arvo. After a break of a few hours I started playing with the code again and on the first run I received this response:
Code: [Select]
{'code': -1, 'data': [], 'msg': 'Operation too frequent', 'time': '1707819330'}I then changed the code to use a randomly generated MAC and haven't had a refusal since.

Thank you!

The GW1000 is much simpler in this regard, though it does use TWO firmware files.  The attached script will determine the information and display it, like so:

% ./check-ecowitt-update-gw1000.sh
Version V1.7.7
http://download.ecowitt.net/down/filewave?n=GW1000_user1&v=user1_gw1000_177.bin
http://download.ecowitt.net/down/filewave?n=GW1000_user2&v=user2_gw1000_177.bin

Note that when you actually download the files, you will want to specify the output name, like so:
% curl -o user1_gw1000_177.bin 'http://download.ecowitt.net/down/filewave?n=GW1000_user1&v=user1_gw1000_177.bin'
% curl -o user2_gw1000_177.bin 'http://download.ecowitt.net/down/filewave?n=GW1000_user2&v=user2_gw1000_177.bin'

Remember to remove the ".txt" from the filename on the attachment.  :-)

{'code': -1, 'data': [], 'msg': 'Operation too frequent', 'time': '1707819330'}I then changed the code to use a randomly generated MAC and haven't had a refusal since.

Gary

Thank you!

I had run into the rate limiting a few times, too, but I just waited a minute and tried again without issues. I wanted to keep the script as simple as possible so that others could easily understand it and borrow the functionality as needed, but generating the random MAC is a great idea!  (I had assumed the rate limiting was per IP address, but I hadn't bothered to verify that - thanks!)

The GW1000 is much simpler in this regard, though it does use TWO firmware files.  The attached script will determine the information and display it, like so:

% ./check-ecowitt-update-gw1000.sh
Version V1.7.7
http://download.ecowitt.net/down/filewave?n=GW1000_user1&v=user1_gw1000_177.bin
http://download.ecowitt.net/down/filewave?n=GW1000_user2&v=user2_gw1000_177.bin

Note that when you actually download the files, you will want to specify the output name, like so:
% curl -o user1_gw1000_177.bin 'http://download.ecowitt.net/down/filewave?n=GW1000_user1&v=user1_gw1000_177.bin'
% curl -o user2_gw1000_177.bin 'http://download.ecowitt.net/down/filewave?n=GW1000_user2&v=user2_gw1000_177.bin'

Remember to remove the ".txt" from the filename on the attachment.  :-)

More good, info, but is there a URL to check if an update is available or what the latest version is?

Yes.

Download the data from this URL (the typo is Ecowitt's, not mine):
   http://download.ecowitt.net/down/filewave?v=FirwaveReadme.txt

And then look at the data, within the section marked "[GW1000]".

You will find three entries of interest:
   VER =
   URL1 =
   URL2 =

The script that I posted wraps all of this into one Unix command for you.  It is really a single pipeline of commands, broken into six lines for readability:

curl --silent --output - \
        'http://download.ecowitt.net/down/filewave?v=FirwaveReadme.txt' | \
sed -n '/^.GW1000.$/, /^$/p' | \
sed -n  -e 's/^VER = .*\(V[0-9\.]*\)$/Version \1/p' \
        -e 's/^URL1 = \(http.*\)$/\1/p' \
        -e 's/^URL2 = \(http.*\)$/\1/p'
