Why are websites becoming so unfriendly?
« on: June 11, 2018, 05:08:40 PM »
You'd think with so many fighting for survival against SuckerFaceFarce, they'd be more then willing to go easy on their minions.  Doesn't seem to be the case though.  I'm finding increasing hostility from Admins.

There's a tractor and mower board that claims to be 'the friendliest' that is far from it.  The mods are downright mean and openly hostile.

A place I go for hurricane information is becoming very active in censoring anything they don't like, accurate or not.

eBay's Community Team is one of the most aggressive on the web against people who post things they don't like.  They keep making up new rules to stifle constructive discussion.

Good thing we're pretty mellow here with only a light admin touch :)

I, too, notice the increasingly open hostility for human interactions between people who do not share the same viewpoint.  It is very sad that the tendency to smite has risen inversely proportionally to the ability to listen.

The good thing about the internet is that it gives everyone a voice.
The bad thing about the internet is that it gives everyone a voice.

I would guess a lot has to do with the anonymity of the board. With a simple user name, It is easy to attack. People are offended easier that ever. Most people do not understand how to read text-instead they read emotion into the text.

Mods have a terrible job in balancing an innocuous topic-cars, weather,-from becoming into a personal bitch and insult fest.

It is hard to separate anything from politics today. As much as some try.

^^  It's not that hard for Mods to sit back and basically say 'grow a thicker skin'.  People get too offended by nothing these days.  They report far too much as 'offensive'.  Tough noogies.  You don't like what somebody posts, don't read it.

You're seeing the rise of the millennial generation (in all phases of our lives). They have a totally different moral code from our previous generations. They love the power it gives them to be "the man" and do whatever they darn well please. Get used to it, it ain't going away, it will only get worse.

Just one of the reasons I like this board  :-)

There was a forestry forum I joined where you couldn't link to an off-site image. I suppose that is understandable on some level. However, their TOS said that once uploaded to them, I couldn't delete or edit the image, and, they owned all the rights to it. I quit hanging out there.

I think this is the main thing. Before the Internet, "those" people were around, but their main bully pulpit was the corner bar. But the Internet has anonymized them and given them a world-wide audience that is not able to, um, physically disagree with them out in the parking lot, if you catch my drift...

Tractor place doesn't let you either.  Funny thing is, the members get along fine, joking and ribbing each other all friendly and stuff.  Then the Mods jump in and start threatening people and it gets real unfriendly.  Then the members start PMing each other because they have no idea who did what wrong.

Some years back the place got bought out (or sold off by the original Admin) without explanation.  Some big conglomerate out of Canada owns it now.  Loaded (and I mean LOADED) with ads and scripts that make pages load slow.  But don't dare complain about it.

And the weather/storm site ......

They have a hard and fast rule that you can't question NOAA.  Who makes a rule that you can't question the Government?

They also have a rule against questioning professional meteorologists and have professional meteorologists moderating comments against professional meteorologists.  Conflict of interest much?
