Fog as measured rain fall
« on: December 11, 2008, 10:31:15 PM »
I am having a hard time excepting that the fog we have had is turning into measurable rain fall of 0.05" this month. I never had any with my old OS, which if I remember had a 0.04" dump bucket, but was I missing that much through evaporation each day?

Do you have a heater in your rain bucket?

The VP will measure condensation (dew). That's why when you check your WU records, it records 0.01 inches on individual days. You're probably right about the OS reading only increments of 0.04 inches, in which case it would not have detected condensation. Dew is not officially recognized as precip.

Kevin...

and if I need to correct them, do I have to do it in VWS or Wlink or both?

That's entirely up to you. I don't correct mine. I just let it read condensation (dew).

It seems that I read somewhere (maybe the VP manual?) that the VP (or maybe VWS) may have a setting to ignore 0.01 inch readings, but I don't recall where I read that.

I have never had my VP2 indicate anything on foggy days.  I joined CoCoRaHs last month, and have been shocked at how inaccurate my VP2 is at measuring precipitation.  I am not going to spend any time in changing any data as I only look at trends, not the actual numbers.

Thanks Kevin. I wouldn't want to limit 0.01" because that was 1 of the reasons to spend the money on a Davis. With the OS there were many days that we had light rain that never showed with the OS. I'll leave it be for now and if I realy want to track it I could aways log it in an exel sheet.

Have a great evening!

I very seldom see more then .01" from fog.  I don't make any corrections when it happens.

I figure if I was a plant that would be .01" of water I would have to drink after a foggy night.

Moisture available for the garden and trees is what I'm interested more so then determining if it was an actual drizzle or light rain event.

tomcj2, you look like you are farther inland than I am. I am not sure, but we have over 1000 miles of delta water way around us and it normally is foggy on a regular basis. Global warming......???? we have not had bad fog in about 7 years but it has returned.

I agree with Mark.  During very dewy (is that a word ;) ) nights, my VP1 will occasionally get enough moisture in the tipping bucket to register .01 of precip.  I do not bother correcting it either.  I know it is not officially rainfall but vegetation will use it as such.

Have a good one...

thanks everyone for your info and thoughts! I won't worry about any more and am thankful I switched to Davis. I never would have known there was that much I was missing. It will soon be a dead issue for this season as the rain will be here tomorrow.

Everybody have a great weekend!
