Basic station with temp sensor
« on: July 25, 2024, 01:09:55 PM »
Hi all.  I've had a Davis VP2 at my primary house for years, but I now need something very basic for my vacation home.

I don't want to deal with maintenance or a heavy installation (no mast).  I don't care about rain and wind at this house.  I just need an indoor display unit along with an outdoor sensor.  Wifi and ability to upload are not necessary.  I do care about the accuracy of the temp/humidity sensor though.

Can anyone comment on some of the really basic stations on amazon?  I see acurite and Unni have simple solutions:

While you said you don't care about wifi, let me suggest that knowing the temperature when you are not at your vacation house has some value.

Choosing this: https://www.amazon.com/Ecowitt-Temperature-Humidity-Atmospheric-Pressure/dp/B0978XLG8T/ref=sr_1_1?crid=1QT9SZG6MUYE5&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.o6boBM11aB0mHfO9EzVT69ab4Etagj5AuVHDU3N3wuVy0fEkXicGwHo6-UMdpFEJN94vvteJvfLup2sqy9CcSYFFvGxIQAQYd9cA61iOhONh1bZ92nQh45ZPWTXeacpMnBhZhiMskjw_tW8QnmkyDA.uZu_zLmSPxDv4Zp1DBf7Y1vnl3UC86wsu65I6ar6-3M&dib_tag=se&keywords=gw1100&qid=1721959229&s=industrial&sprefix=gw1100%2Cindustrial%2C129&sr=1-1-catcorr&th=1
... and putting that device (powered with a USB wallwart) outside but in a sheltered spot (free from rain) would provide  data to your phone or computer regardless of where you happened to be at the time.

If you didn't want to put that unit outside, put it inside and add this sensor outdoors (in the shade): https://www.amazon.com/ECOWITT-Outdoor-Temperature-Humidity-Sensor/dp/B07MZ4RWY1/ref=sr_1_1?crid=1CX1UCZG8MRXY&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.6ALx5V-ipR6R1O4p0UI5mqu0UCKXZh1ahDCB1s63zAHGjHj071QN20LucGBJIEps.LtDOzGi9ZVO90rEUJa9hcNKvspsqPLBMIDaxVPJxIaI&dib_tag=se&keywords=ecowitt%2Bwn32&qid=1721959768&s=industrial&sprefix=ecowitt%2Bwn32%2Cindustrial%2C123&sr=1-1&th=1
As a bonus, with the second option, both the inside and outside temperatures would be available on your phone.

Note that prices are likely to be less than Amazon at Ecowitt's own shop, although delivery is likely longer.

Many thanks for this.  In your experience, are the Ecowitt temperature sensors (the remote rectangle one you linked) more accurate than acurite or other brands?

I don't have any experience with Acurite to make a comparison.

I will say that I have two different Ecowitt temperature sensors in the same physical location, and they don't show the exact same temperature.  But I don't know how to quantify the difference.

Right now its dark out, so sun exposure is not an issue, and the sensor wired to my GW2000 (roughly equivalent to the GW1100) reports 74.8F while the battery operated standalone sensor reports 76.8.  But as I recall, you can't count on the difference to always be 2 degrees.  I don't have any kind of calibrated reference device so I don't know what the ACTUAL temperature is.

There is an option called "calibrate" that allows a + or - adjustment to the reported temperature that is simple enough to set up.

Is a degree or two really going to make any difference to you ????

I have a half-dozen Ecowitt T+H sensors for indoor and outdoor as well as the gateway's sensor and I've found them within the +/- specs Ecowitt quotes.    I did set up a few little raspi ds18b20 and DHT11 sensors on breadboard rigs and colocated everything to see if any ran a little hot/cold.  I think I had one sensor I had to tweak the tuning for a little via the Ecowitt mobile app.

That's not a 'calibrated' test but it was better than nothing I suppose....

  PurpleAir (outside)

I have  8 indoor temp/humidity sensors and a temp/hum/press sensor.
At one time I had them all co-located to see if I needed  to adjust any in the app.
No adjustments were necessary for any of them.
Same as above: not a calibrated test, but shows consistency.

Hi,

How about a Davis AirLink? If you have Wifi out there it will do what you're asking for with the added bonus of AQI readings plus connectivity via WeatherLink.

Cheers,
