Rain X

Is it a good idea to coat the funnel of the rain gauge with Rain X so the drops slide easier?

NO.
some people who do it have reported that over time, it peels off.   Just be sure that your rain cone is level and all the water will flow into the rain pan.  Level in two directions, but level.

Save your money on the Rain X.

If it peeled off then I would have an excuse to take it apart. LOL. I wonder how it was applied that caused it to peel

"Plexus" seems to work well for this purpose. I treated my Davis and CoCoRaHS gauges with it.

why do you need or think you need to coat the rain buckets in the first place?  it isn't a significant amount of water  and it will eventually flow into the rain pan?

Just ignore me and go for whatever floats your boat.  you might want to check the solvent and how it behaves on plastic

I used it at one time, never saw/noticed any peeling but also never noticed any difference either
rainx vs none, both still leave surface beads, no point really...

As for peeling, im not overly sure its even possible for it to peel, now, on the other hand, it is possible
it took some finishing layer off the plastic???

WD40 has the same effect when used in micro a mounts and polished in
Kind regards

Regular Rain X is not made for use on plastics, ask any motorcycle rider that has put it on his shield. They do make a Rain X for plastic but it is not nearly as good and doesn't last as long.

I watched video's on maintenance of the NWS style 8" gauge in at least one of them they recommended car wax. Any droplets left in funnel are likely to evaporate instead of get measured.

Winter time I always use a snow and ice repellent on heated tipping bucket because evaporation is biggest enemy with light snowfall and quicker water droplets move off funnel the better.
