Trying to connect webcam to Weather Underground
« on: October 20, 2007, 05:48:16 PM »
Completely new at all this....I have my new VP2 connected to Wunderground with no problems. I am trying to connect my Microsoft LifeCam to my Wunderground page. I followed their directions and it's connecting OK , but it's just uploading jpegs of the the graphics of the Virtual Weather Station! How do I get VWS to recognize my webcam? There doesn't seem to be a setting which will connect it to VWS.

Your profile doesn't state where you're located.

I'd like to see what you're seeing on WU.

I think the uploads don't show up on WU right away.

VWS just doesn't seem to have a link to connect my webcam.

VWS doesn't have built-in support for the WU webcams at this time.

You'll need a third-party FTP program.

I use "Fling" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fling_FTP).

Those that I know of... use Weather Display's built-in FTP feature... of course, the latest versions of WD have the webcam FTP in the WU setup screen.

Davis VP2 6153; Weather Display (LIVE w/ Ajax); Quickcam for Notebooks Pro; Boltek w/ Nexstorm; GRLevel3; live NOAA Radio

I use ImageSalsa for my web cam and that uploads the image to WU, among other places.

OK this connecting webcam thing is ridiculously difficult. I am going to spend only one more hour on it before I give up... I downloaded "Fling", made the destination file where the webcam pics go into to webcam.wunderground.com. But how do I get my webcam to automatically take a picture? It seems the only way to save a picture is to click on the image manually!

That depends on what kind of camera you're using, and whether the software that came with it, if any, is capable of taking automated snapshots of images.  As Bob mentioned, ImageSalsa will do this for you, and ImageSalsa will also do the uploads if you wish.  ImageSalsa isn't free, but worth every penny in my opinion.  There may be free programs that will take snapshots as well.

Maybe someone else will chime in within the next 46 minutes with other suggestions.

So can anyone tell me how to make my LifeCam VX 1000 take automated snapshots? Don't tell me to look at software that came with it--it doesn't say!

You will need some sort of software to do it. I am not familiar with that camera, so not very much help there as to what it requires.

How are you grabbing the image now?

I do it manually--I open up my cam, take a snapshot, and the Fling software program sends it to WU.

Try webcamxp. This is what I use to send my data to Wunderground. You can try the trial version before you buy it but it's worth the money.

Then by all means, you need some software bad.

Like I mentioned, I use ImageSalsa    http://www.imagesalsa.com

There are tons of different software packages to choose from. Make a choice and get it ASAP to get things automated.

http://www.wheresjames.com/index.php?page=wjwp2

All right--another hour wasted  I downloaded WheresJames and it won't upload my images! Can anyone tell me what the SETTINGS should be? For the server address I put in webcam.wunderground.com and for FTP Upload folder I put in the ID name for my webcam assigned by Wunderground. I get a popup that says  FTP Server information not found.
I don't know how the rest of you ever got yours to work--this is so frustrating!

Don't worry, you will eventually get it. Could you include some screen shots so we can see exactly what you are doing? I'm not familiar with the program. OR...Have you tried WebcamXP like I mentioned? Sometimes freeware is freeware for a reason. Install WebXp.........

The ftp portion of WheresJames does work. I've used it in the past to upload video from a security camera.
Do you get a video picture on your pc?
If you do get video, it could be your router is blocking the transmission since it doesn't ftp with two different software programs.

Here is a note I found;
Quote
When running or accessing certain Internet Applications from your home network, a required port or range of ports specific to the application will need to be opened through the Gateway's firewall.

I had to set the cameras IP address to open up port 80 (default).  TCP,UDP 80

Yes  I see a picture on my PC. On my Wunderground page it says my camera is not active. It only seems to go active when I put the web server address into my Virtual Weather Station settings. Do I need to do this? I don't see why this is necessary if I use WheresJames to upload the images directly to the server. Thoughts?

VWS has nothing to do, what so ever, with uploading your webcam image to WU.

That's what I figured anyway, Bob. I emailed the Wunderground Tech Support about this issue, but they never got back to me. Typical

If you're not uploading anything I don't understand how they could possibly help you. WU doesn't have any software available to do what you are asking. You are going to have to figure out which software you want to use.

All I did was ask them to tell me what are their FTP settings needed to allow the software to upload to WU.
